Our sophomore year went slowlyg We tried to forge ahead And follow truth and honor, The traits by which she led. We then became wise juniors. Though ever much in doubt, We'd never have to ask herg She'd always help us out. Our senior year went quickly Since we were on the go. Our thanks goes to Miss Philp, For she has made it so. ejames Gkonos 5 5'enior.s' I ' 1 lf V f Y KJf, iiwx fl frff ffnwx F1 ffiliil j 'xN 1 ' 'N-I l.5 ' ' ' 'ff-5-Fxh j Q' '9 X'f3 'TN X. The deep vaulted Starlit sky, More vaulted still On autumn nights, ' Picks up each sad, sweet note Of dying waves To 'make a symphony Of muffled and eternal roar. My soul, Restrained all day By little man-made things, Joins in the Symphony, And breaks its earthly bonds To soar among the stars, When autumn comes Near the great lake shore, And the nights are crisp, And clear, and still. -l-E. Gross- man rose to all-state heights during the year by being placed on the Detroit Free Press first all-state eleven. Jelinek, a great high school tackle for two years, was accorded a well-earned place on the sec- ond team in the Associated Press selections. Both Grossman and Jelinek were placed on the first all- valley team selected by the Saginaw Valley coaches and daily newspapers. A record audience had a lively time from the moment the curtain rose, revealing the struggles of Tom Gerst to finish a term paper, until the last ex- plosion from the ustinkum stinktorumf' Our glamour gals, Valerie McElhinny and Margaret Lyons, besides adding colorful touches to the scenery, furnished the romantic moments - and we do mean romantic. Katie Telfer-'s performance as a hardboiled journalist won laurels. One of the highlights of the play was the mistaken identity of a dignified millionaire for an art model posing as a Russian Bolshevik. The elegant Mr. Purcell, por- trayed to perfection by Bob Evans, was gagged, stripped and clothed in a smock, then tied to a hat rack. How- ever, everything ended entirely to everyone's satisfac- tion and a contented, laughed-out audience developed a bad case of fever - the kind that causes poets to utter, In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to love. In fact we find our hero of the senior play acting as prexy and our beautiful belle of the junior play as his right hand Hman. A typical meeting follows: Jack Whitely rapslightly with his gavel and all balloon-dusting ceases. Valerie lVIcElhinney rises and informs the club about cut-ups at the last meeting, as well as other jabberwacky that secretaries are required to record. The pieces of eight are entrusted to Frank Preston, treasurer, and the meeting is formally opened to verbal breezes. Cosmetics a la Binkley, recent legits that laid the proverbial egg, and actors who hitched their marquis to a comet are among the topics we discussed. The club's efforts are displayed before P. T. A. meetings, community clubs, and school assemblies. The season's slaving and hilarity is climaxed with a jive sessiong everyone has a devastatingly swell time and peers forth into the next year toward more Shakespeare in the modern mode. Their faithfulness and punctuality should put most of us to shame. Let's imagine the plight of a stranger struggling to reach his seat before the rising of the curtain for the senior play. As he reaches the door, the orchestra is playing the final chords and there is no one in sight to guide him. He hurriedly walks to where he imagines he will find seat 13, Row H. The house lights are dimmed and it is almost impossible to read the letters, but as the opening lines are spoken, he finds Row H and bravely struggles over legs and feet midst objections and disgusted remarks. Finally, here is Seat 13, but someone else has already taken over. So he fights his way to the back of the auditorium to watch the first act in bitter despair. Q The Ushers' Club, with Miss Stewart as advisor and Wilma Nourse as chairman, eliminates such occurrences at all important functions held at the high school auditorium. Of course, they are hep on the Latin Veni Creator Spiritusn of the six- teenth century and all the rest of the classics. The noise was overwhelming: everyone was talking at once. The new recruit was terrified, but soon his fears vanished for out of this chaos the chairman arose, knocked on the desk, and fought for order. Chairman: The question we are debating today is: Resolved: That Mr. Kinney's Jokes Are Cornyl The affirmative is upheld by that wacky trio of Bob, Sue, and Theda while they are aided by those femmes fatales, Anne, Jane, and Ann. Rumor has it that the nitwit negative, jim Barie, Carl, and Sally, aim at outflanking the enemy by lashing out with jokes of their own. The wordy conventionalists, Jim Gkonos, Kate, and Dean, will valiantly defend their honorable coach. Bob: As first speaker I would like to submit the following evidence: Mr. Kinney's pet joke is the one about the man who after the accident said, 'Tm just scraping up an old acquaint- ance. Now, to clearly define what we mean by a. good joke, we offer the following story: CENSORED! Carl: Ladies and gentlemen: The reputation of our illus- trious coach is at stake. His aim is to whitewash the blackout of eternal sorrow. His duty, as chairman of the committee promoting Deeper Grooves in the Gray Matter, somewhat limits his scope of activity. Mr. Kinney ffrom the depths of his Scholastic Magazinel: We must aspire to loftier heights and remember Pearl Harbor! Another debate is scheduled in a week and our honor is threat- ened. You know winning third place in Saginaw Valley and a University of Michigan plaque gives us a high reputation to uphold. I make a motion we attack this problem: Resolved: That every able bodied male citizen of the United States be required to have one full year of military training before the present draft age. This is a vital question and it's up to you to convince the judge that your side is right. That good record of four victories to two defeats that you made, Jim Barie, Carl, and Sal may be spoiled if you don't prepare for this debate. This judge may not know about the jinx on all-girl teams, so Ann, Jane, and Anne you may chalk up another victory for your record of two gains and four losses. This offers Jim Gkonos, Katie, and Dean a chance to break the tie of three victories to three defeats. Last, but not least, Sue, Bob, and Theda have an opportunity for revenge after Bay City caused their first and only defeat this season. While storm clouds gather . . It says here . . Soup's on! By the process of elimination fwishing he had been eliminated, tool he gulped and trudged over to the encyclopedias. The numbers and names encircled him. In fact, he couldn't quite remember whether cactus started with a c or a uk. Mrs. Crosby, our very little but very capable librarian, had warned about no talking in the library so he didn't dare ask anyone where to find it. But one of the thirteen fand lucky thirteen for the freshiel assistant librarians came to his rescue. She found a science book for him containing the Latin name. After a few days in the library, he dwindled to a mere shade of Chartreuse instead of the habitual green. However, a librarian's work is not all a matter of dull routine, dusting books, and helping fellow students since there is always the annual chili con carne supper cooked by Mrs. Crosby's own special recipe with the inevitable, and not so intellectual, confab afterward. sss-mw.ew.s.eQs:fas.twarns we sw a o Oo one .O ovaaoevatopso l Ama ear Photographers Call If a Day Watch the birdie is not the only password for crashing into the photographic darkroom. The members of the Camera Club must know the ins and outs of developing, printing, and enlarging, especially when using that luscious new equipment that bas been acquired this year. They go through many processes to make a photograph from the time it begins as the germ of ia million-dollar idea in photographer Don Meyer's gray matter until it emerges from the dark- room, a finished product. First Don focuses the camera on the subject at hand by adjusting the compli- cated gadgets connected therewith through the use of the new exposure meter fthis shows the oomph of the subject's radiationl. As soon as the picture has been shot, the negative is carefully protected from inquisitive fingers by enclosure in a film pack and thus transported to the darkroom, and we do mean dark, for even the keyhole is covered. After removing the film from the pack in this utter oblivion, Don gropes blindly for the developer tray wherein the negative is completely inundated for six minutes. Upon removing it from the chemical bath, Don gives it a cold shower, immerses it in hypo for about five minutes, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, and finally washes it in running water for fifteen minutes. fQuite a cleansing, but a negative gets only one bath during its life- timel. The final process includes even the humble clothespin by which the negative is attached to a drying rack. When the negative has been completed, the monumental job is but half-finished -printing and enlarging is the other half. Robert Carmody and Clarence Dickinson work with the contact printer to make the picture exactly as revealed by the camera's eye, but Leon Inman and Frank Revenaugh decide to add a sparky touch to the picture by using the enlarger. They slide the negative in here, the safety light is turned on here, the enlarger moves up and down, and the image comes out here. While they're still on the beam, they time the exposure with the regular light on and some so-called sensitive paper fit doesn't mind having its face lifted and a picture slapped onl. Then Frank and Leon douse the paper in a pan of some chemical concoction fdeveloper to youl, the second bath is called a stopper and the third bath will entirely erase their picture if thev forget and leave them overnight. - Here's where the feminine element takes over. Jean McNett, Margaret Parr, and Virginia Ford are right at home working on the dryer. They have already washed the picture in cold water, ironed it on a chromium plate with a rubber roller, and are now drying it over a nest of electric light bulbs. This gives it that glossy shine that not even Pepsodent's irium can duplicatez 71 Nw ,Nunn . ,.,..Y Q 'Si :ik XS .. s- S X K Etta:-ii q x k' X E S i x'-gf-'ff gui 1 ,A Q S.. One night in particular, his best pal persuaded him to accept a blind date who turned out to be a beautiful blonde-a glamorous hunk of woman. In the seclusion of the deep shade of the front porch, Herby, noting the excellent progress of his friend in the conquest of his particular speci- men of womanhood decided how to make an impression. He hadn't spoken s. word as yet, but now he went completely pixy, grabbed the blonde's hand and in his best French, murmured, Poupom, m'aimes-tu? He followed up this maneuver with the recitation of a French poem of love. Before he could finish, his date arose abruptly, minced to the other end of the porch and demanded of Herby's pal, Why did you bring a no-good drizzle who an't even speak English? With that she stomped Patricia Shaffer, Nancy Percy, Jane Taylor, Betty Wallace, Peggle ra Howe. 0111: 011i -- Maybe off the porch into the night and out of Herby's life forever. Our downcast hero decided to save his French for the club where it would be appreciated. Besides appreciating Herby's French, the club's enticing meetings fyes, indeedj consist of singing French songs, playing French games, and eating French food igood old American cooking with a fancy namel. Its main purpose is to interest students in the French language which can be very useful fes- pecially when you wish to mystify your listener or call your enemy unpleasant namesl. Miss Philp, the advisor, can rattle off French as fast as she can English and Latin. The club's activities are directed by those three struggling French students: James Gkonos, presi- dent, Nancy Percy, vice-presidentg Clara Howe, secretary. ... ,,....wafssrss--- l 1 of Q , 'a w 'www ,' S . V The objective of the High School P.T.A. is to unify the purpose of parents and teachers in working for the high school students. Plans include a money-raising project for the Student Aid Fund and programs to acquaint the parents with the work being accomplished in the various departments. The organization launched into its second year of existence with a get-acquainted program honoring the new teachers and the freshman parents. Mr. Cournyer conducted a Man on the Street , or Principal in the Gymnasium , program which proved both interesting and entertaining. The November meeting brought a panel discussion of the porentialitieshof our P.T.A. in local and national defense work. Attorney Norman Desjardins acted as chairman for this group of well-informed men and women, most of them either teachers or parents. The program of the February meeting included music by high school ensembles, a play given by the Dramatics Club, an exhibition of tumbling by girl students, and a skit produced by parents and teachers. When the parents actually followed the schedules of their offspring and went to school for ten-minute classes at the March meeting, they began to appreciate to a greater extent the problems of both teacher and pupil. Ann Mosher presides over the board, Pauly Perkins takes notes, and Lillian Campbell keeps track of thesilver pieces. Sue Blair pounds the gavel in Ann's absence. The Blue Triangle is made up of the older girls in the high school who are attempting to promote their social aptitucles. Although the get-togethers are regular pow-wows, the girls are serious too. As their purpose is to find and give the best, they knit squares for afghans for the Red Cross, give a Little Sister party annually for the more unfortunate little cherubs, and are host esses for all the senior girls at a picnic in June. The sweaters, mittens, and scarfs that had been appearing in assemblies and study halls since late fall were easily transformed into knitted squares. Miss Osmer at first deplored the odd shapes and sizes of the six-inch afghan squares, but after a little instruc- tion everyone's ability and enthusiasm zoomed. When the membership drive began,'everyone eagerly deposited his dime in the little round box. Pauly Per- kins was chosen to keep the show rolling with Carlton Moore's help. Irene Sawer put the activities in writing and John Mahaney took charge of the little round box. Unlike some clubs all the members of Junior Red Cross are in there digging--some make their fingers fly across the typewriter keys and the Social Directory is born, some who have brawn use their manly muscles to assist the moving to new headquarters, others volunteer their two-wheeled velocipedes for use in emergencies and thus expose themselves to loss of some of that precious forty winks, and last but not least, those who take the First Aid Course will be helping their country not only in time of war but also in time of peace. If it were not for the newly organized defense council we might imagine the following incident occurring: The ,buzzer signal sounds and the students dash out of the rooms, down the halls, and through the doors. As they reassemble on the sidewalks, the first bomb drops. It is a terrible catastrophe, for the students had failed to dis- tinguish between an air raid alarm and a fire alarm. Alas, because of their stupidity a fatality resulted - Squeaky, our pet guinea pig, was scared to death. The defense council, however, is cooperating with our government to further national defense. Its projects this year include setting up an air raid system for the school, stepping up the sale of defense stamps among the students, and collecting books for service men. I Me More Serious Side of life The honor of being valedictorian of the 194-2 class goes to Barbara Melling because of her excellent rating of 3.986. A perfect score, meaning a straight A average, is four. Her average was not earned by taking the easiest courses offered in high school unless you could call physics and trigonometry simple. Barbara is not the proverbial bookworm, as this high average might lead one to believe, since she has been active in debating, has been an enthusiastic member of the Science Club, and has worked on committees for the Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Reception. Photography, tennis, and swimming occupy her spare moments. She even indulges in such plebeian tastes as making scrapbooks, going on hikes, and collecting records. When asked if she had a pet peeve, Barbara replied that only one thing made her sizzle-the question, Do you really like to study? In strictest confidence she confessed her greatest weaknesses-unique hats and mother's pies. Her future plans include a combined course of nursing and laboratory technique with an ultimate goal of a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Michigan. Barbara Melling, Valedictorian Lenora Bandkau missed the valedictorianship by .002 of a p0int, her average being 3.984, and thus became the salutatorian. In her four years at Owosso High she was outstanding in athletics as well as scholarship, having been manager of the G.A.A. bowling and soft- ball teams. She also worked on the Spic typing staff, and assisted on com- mittees for the Junior-Senior Reception, for the Junior and Senior Plays, and for the Senior Prom. In all these activities she has always been very cooperative since the one thing she dislikes most is a poor sport. If her dreams come true, she will major in English at the University of Michigan, -and some day we will hear the freshmen at O.H.S. say, There goes Miss Bandkau, our new English teacher. 82 Lenora Bandkau, Salutatorian .g W f .V x X rugg - Qifikw W5 X - L ww e w Q 5 X . x BX . . lx Q91 X .
