Midland 6 The Trojans made the dedication of night games a great Owosso 20 event as they trounced the Midland Chemists on October 15. The brilliant running of Joe Scriba oEset the touch- down of Midland. Scriba scored all three of the Owosso touchdofwns. B TEHIH FUUTBHLL 1 -Coach Glen Mason's BH team squad, showed many prospects for future Trojan teams. Among these was the plunging, lunging, line-smacking Robert C'Pea-brainedvl Schwartz, who was outstanding all season as a ground gainer. Another was the horrible, harrassing Horace Holland, who galloped around end so much that it became a habit. Then there was the passing combination of Loud-mouth Baker to Carr-oll, who seemed al- most certain of All American until Davey O'Brian of T. C. U. showed up. Many others sh-owed marked improvement, and were valuable to the team. The .team as a whole was of good quality and possessed players to Watch for on future varsity teams. They successfully finished their sched- ule this season by clipping Corunna High, coschamps of Central C. This was the theme of the annual Senior play, Apron String Revolt , which was presented on November eighteenth with a capa- city crowd in attendance. The character of Mrs. Holt was perfectly played by Carol Joy, who was under a terrific strain when she discovered her pride and joy had left on a freight. Bob Segula, as David, was a typical high school boy who disliked Latin and never remembered to Hx the furnace for Mamma. The audience was kept in a gale of laughter by the wise-cracks of Miss Madden portrayed by Barbara Scarlett, who knew all the rules of bringing up chil- dren, and who, during the times of David's mysterious disappearance, :never dropped a stitch. Henry Fenstermacher, played by David Matthews, was the football coach who flew to Hendrixburg for David, and then fell in love with his mother. Other character portrayals were Geraldine Jones as Mrs. Alden, a neighbor lady, Clare' Davis, her son, J ackg Margaret Martin as Miss Martin, and Ted Taylor as Wade, CI'm Wade from the Blade J, b-ofth reporters, Lionel DeWitt, Clancey, the policeman, and Audrey Spiegel as Mrs. Lanni- gan, the housekeeper, Ca very amusing pair of loversb 5 Falice Pittenger, as Mary Lou, a neighbor girl, Scott Wilcox, the grocer boy, and Bob White as the telegraph boy. Director Miss Combellack is to be praised very highly in her work with the cast. Emma Minarik was student director. ' --19- Left to right: Mr. E. S. Brewer, Mr. W. R. Twenty Owosso students took part in the three tourniaments held at iFlint, Owosso and Pontiac. Although the four Owoss-0 teams won few of the debates, all of the participants gained a certain poise and assurance which will help them later in speaking before audiences. At these tournaments, emphasis was placed upon social contacts as well as the debates themselves. Dinner was served by the entertaining schools and a program usually followed. The question for debate this year was, Resolved: That the United States should establish 'an alliance with Great Britianf' The Owosso teams were coached by'Mr. H-ood, Mr. MacDonald, and Mr. Roelofs, who helped our struggling orators over the rough spots. On March 10, letters and pins were awarded the following outstanding debaters: Ben Bidwell Theo Rowell Frances Armstrong Betty Spiece Bert Saunders Arneita Putnam Ellen Greene Betty McCarty Helen Soucie Lillian Campbell Adeline Chrysler The following teachers helped judge the tournament debate held here: Mr. Shanafelt Mrs. Braddock Mrs. Campbell Mr. Bloomfield ' Mr. Cournyer Miss Schipper D , -31- 1 'xv- W Ki -W 1,7 - , ..---Y , v- V.. -f , ---------- W- vf- -fi-f--rf -- 3 --' -' 1 ' nv-in-H' fm ' ' , I rw. 'lhe old ancestral home received such a going over as had never been 'witnessed before in the old home-town. Seriously, though, the Junior play was a riot, and the rafters were creaking in the auditorium before the play was ended. The characters were Well portrayed by our dramatists of the junior class, ably directed by Miss Carter. She' certainly had Eugene Ploger, Dr. Cashion, in her power. He started to prescribe pills for her and ended up prescribingpmarriage. Bob Schwartz and Bob Telfer, as the boy friends of the two 'college girls, almost stole the show in the second act, and -they did run away with a few of the family heirlooms. 'R 5 ' l a The party scene, with Frances Fox, Lorraine Waters, Jane Cournyer, John Howe, Maurice Horski, and Bill Broker, looked like lots of fun. One of the hits of the evening was the fexcellent acting 'of Jiggs Smith, commonly known as Bijou,'a small-.lap dog of whom Gracie was very fond. UHCHESTRH Since the High School orchestra is made of 'stringed instruments, once in a while we pull a few strings and induce them to play f-or us. We never hear enough of them, though. They play on such state occasions as for the Junior and Senior Plays, as well as for some other programs that are given in the auditorium. Practices are held twice weekly. When the orchestra does play for the special occasions, wind instruments from the band are added. We're as proud of our orchestra as we are of any school organization but we wish we'd hear more from them. l I A l'Vind Instruments-J. Richmond, M. Lyons, R. Williams, W. Tufford, C. Hinspeter, R. We had a little get-together in the auditorium today. A man from the state government was showing pictures about tranic. lt was fun, although some of us felt a little guilty. March 11. Today was big stuff in school. We had an assembly. A play, Two Gentlemen On a Bench, was given by the Copper Theatre and gee!-is James Orser a heart throb-Sigh! Sigh! Tonight was the G. C. L. Depression Drag . The gayety was terrific-it wasn't a dragged-out party tho' cause Jack Dowling and his Blossoms of Joy obliged. ' - March 17. Sophomores had a brain twister- and threw the neatest party since the last one. They used a victrola-radio combination, with a bang-up record display. Was it a flutter! March 21. The Juniors gave us a brief preview of the big night, namely Three Days of Gracie. It was just an appetizer and boy! am I hungry for the rest of it! 'March 21. The- gym exhibit was a success, and the success was due to the efforts of all the gals 'n fellas who took part. The drills were perfectly executed and were led by Ted Koerner and John White. Spice was added to the program by the last number which exemplified all the dances of the present day-truckin', suzi-Q, and all the jitierbugs w-ere runnin, around like mad. 'Twas .enjoyed by all who viewed the spectac e. 'March 24. The Junior play was just luscious--full of giggles, puns, and hearty guffaws. Gee! Wish I could act like those dramatic Hedy Lamarrs and Clark Gables! A March 27. An inspiring lecture by Cameron Beck, former personell manager of the New York Stock Exchange, gave us all something to think! about. We were so impressed that we're using an exerpt from his speech as class motto. He was Very nice and here's hoping he comes back some other time. March'29. Another Copper Theatre production set the day right. Six girls gave a finished performance of Re-hearsal . 'Twas a fine exhibition of our talented lassies and-are they nice! March 31. The Seniors jerked a nice party out of the bag t'nite. The Seniors always have a swell time at their parties. We swayed to the rhythms of Joe Cforn and his Golden Bantam Four-oh, I beg your pardon-it was Jack Dowling. April 4. We were deliciously pleased by the warblers in the Girls' Glee Club of Asbury College sixth hour today. Some of the girls came from Japan, Africa, and even South America, but our big surprise came when Ruth Fall, a home-town girl, introduc- ed herself. Did we applaud? I'll say we did! April 5. Some negro entertainers, part of the annual Lyceum course, performed their cut-ups and stuH in an assembly today. The spirituals were lovely and the dances were downright spicy. We all clapped and clapped until our hands looked like hams. Even that certain five per cent liked it and, believe it or not, behaved! April 20. If anyone had any illusions about magic or spiritualism in assembly today, they certainly had it shocked out of them. Mr. Cook, a magician, told us of the exploits we are exposed to w'hen we go to fortune tellers and circus side shows, or may- be I don't mean side showfs. He certainly snapped people out of it anyway. May 5. Senior Prom tonight. No one can concentrate. All they do is sit and gab aboutz- How are you having your hair done? Is Johnny taking her? What is your dress like ? Are you getting gardenias? Every one looks so goony, hair all slicked down 'n stuff, but it's fun. May 9. Assembly-last Lyceum of the year. Fun like anything. Two gentlemen, comedians, artists, vocalists and what have you? 'Twas a scream. , May 12. Senior assem-bly today. We found out all the dates of Senior activities. Makes me feel so chilly and not want to graduate. Senior and Junior girls have their breakfast on June 10. Baccalaureate is on June 11. Will we have a big day on Wed- nesday. Senior luncheon at noon, class day in the afternoon and Junior-Senior recep- tion at night. Then the big day comes on Thursday. This is the time when everyone drags out a big hankie and sobs audibly into it. Commencement! We're having it at the stadium too. Last but not least the picnic is being held June 1 at Lake Lansing. That'1l be a big frolic and such a temptation to the underclassmen. Oh well! Their turn is coming. ' ....47.... , x 3,,',i.........kxr U -Y.-.I 4 wp' xg' 1 ' 'Ir -f-1'1 L' V 1.1, -,.. V 1, ,Q v. ' SEHIUH Plllllll The annual Senior Prom was held Friday evening, May 5, when Buddy Kay and his 12 piece band played for nearly 250 couples. The Armory was very colorfully decorated, the theme being the Mexican motif. The brill- iant colors of yellow, red, green, blue, and class colors of light green and gold, were all beautifully combined in the scheme. At intervals, long strings of Mexican fruits and vegetables were suspended around the balco- ny railings. The ceiling was concealed with paper streamers in those colors centered with 'a circle of balloons of the same colors. Panels of Mexican scenes and huge cactus plants covered the walls. Palm trees and cactus were arranged in garden settings, where garden furniture was placed. The grand march was led by Arnold Burke, class president, and Dorothy Mack, who were immediately followed by Barbara Scarlett, class treasurer, and John White. The third couple in line were Betty Jeffords, class secretary, and Lawrence Coy. The patrons and patronesses were: Superintendent and Mrs. E. J. Willman, Principal and Mrs. E. A. Cournyer, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Beebe, Dr. and Mrs. A. L. Arnold, Jr., Mrs. Minnie Gebhart, dean of girls, and Miss Emily Osmer, senior class adviser. -49- ' '-' 1. The assistants to the librarian Cone each hour during the day, two before school, two after school, and one during noon periodj are members of the Library Club . Credit is given for this work. Their work is to check books in and out, assist students in finding reference material, and, in general, to make themselves useful and helpful in the library. There are also two students. who do book repairing during one hour every day. They learn this work from someone who has done it previously and find it a useful achievement. They are also able to prolong the lives of library Xbooks. The assistants learn where all the diferent types of books are located and how to make and file book cards as well. In short, after working in the library for a semester, they find they have been useful not only to the students and librarian, but they have also learn- ed a good deal about books, authors, and classes of books, which will be of lasting benefit to them. -52.L 'f. -WH -f 4-' ., . It offers an opportunity for some boys to participate in school activities who might not have other opportunities to do so. Some of these activities are judging contests, trips, softball, basketball, etc. A high light this 'year was a trip to Chicago. Ten boys, accompanied by Mr. Dynes, attended the International Live Stock Show and visited places of interest in Chicago, such as Field Museum, Hull House, Maxwell Street, Shedd Aquarium, and other places. In the state-Wide judging contest at Michigan State College this spring, two teams from the school took first place. These were won in poultry judging. Richard Brichan, Rex Knoblach, and Ward Hanchett were on the first teamg Don LeCureux, Ollie Crane, and Richard Brichan were on the dairy team. The usual number of boys belonging to the club is thirty-five. The qualifications a boy must have to be a member are these: Q15 must be at least fourteen years of age 5 C25 must be taking agricultural subject, C31 must carry out supervised project during the summer. Prizes are given to the boys who have the best project during the school year. Joe Krause and Paul Dudenhofer each received a twenty- dollar hog as their prize. Arnold Wheeler received two R. O. IH HIEHIUHIHIH We dedicate this Spic in memory of Bob White, a student of the Owosso High School, and a member of this years Senior Class. Bob was active, as Well as interest- ed, in many school activities. He work- ed on the Junior Play, Junior-Senior re- ception, and many class dances. He was particularly interested in sports, especi- ally football and tennis, but he also en- joyed the sports that he did not actually participate in. Any outdoor activity, such as fish- ing, hunting, skating, and camping, was his hobby. ' Bob was born in Owosso and always attended the Owosso Public Schools. He was very well liked throughout the en- tire school and his place will never be able to be refilled. X VHLEDICIURU Friends and Classmates: Today we are celebrating the most important occasion we have yet encountered in our school life. It marks the close of four years of study, which will assist us in our attempt to gain success when we begin our new life. We are not closing our books with a feeling that our education is finished, but 'with the knowledge- that this move- ment is a transaction to a broader field of new and different experiences. A It is difficult at a time like this to be sure of what we are going to meet as we leave school. Not only in our own country but in the world at large, we find a state of unrest. :But because, in the educational field, equal opportunities are given the young people of America, anyone who has the determination to fight for what he wants, will go a long way toward gaining his goal. With the leaving of school many responsibilities come our way. In view of the fact that many of us will be forced to support ourselves either entirely or partially, it is our job to show the world We can handle any situation which may arise. As We leave school it is with a feeling of regret, because many of us must bid our final good-byes to those with whom we have shared many happy days. As the repre- sentative of the senior class, I say good-bye to the students of the Owosso High School and to the faculty who have helped make these four years so enjoyable. ' -Geraldine Jones SHIUIHIURU Friends and Classmates: - I want to extend to you a sincere welcome to our Class Day exercises. This day brings us one step closer to the goal of our school days-graduation. For many of us, our formal education is over, while others will continue in higher institutions of 1ea1'ning, but learning does not cease with school. It is something much greater that must be cultivated as a daily habit. Whether we go on to college or not, eventually, we shall have to assume responsibility in the afairs of the community, the state, and the nation. In order to prepare us for that responsibility, the school through its guidance program has attempted to recognize our individual abilities and provide for the development of them. We are living in times of great social and economic distress, and it does seem dis- couraging for the young man or woman graduating today, but we must keep our faith and trust in God and Man. W-e must be thankful that we are citizens of a free country. For what other nation offers the vast opportunities that America does? Here is a country where every creed, race, and nationality is on an equal footing ands free from persecution. Only when we think of the countries of Europe and Asia, where each is suspicious of the other, can we fully realize the blessings of a democracy such as ours. Do you know that there is a 3,000 mile front between the United States and Canada which is left unguarded? Such a condition is impossible to find elsewhere. In closing, I wish to welcome you again to Class Day, and may this day be remem- bered as one of the highlights in our journey through life. ' E' SEHIUR CLHSS llllll X BE IT REMEMBERED, That we, the Senior Class of 1939, being fairly sound of mind and with an average mentality, but knowing the un- certainties of this life, do hereby make, execute, and declare this to be Our Last Will and Testament, in the manner following: ' First, before bidding these sacred portals fond farewell and entering the big bad business world, we wish to state that while we are transmitting these possessions and privileges to the said undergrads Cwho, by the way, are greatly in need of benencial advice and practical experiencej, we hope that they will take advantage of our over-abundant generosity and try, however futile the attempt may seem, to rise, by slow degrees if necessary, to our esteemed plane. Second, we, who are about to go, give, devise, and bequeath the follow- ing collectively: To the juniors, the usual confusion and rapidity of events that can come only in the senior year, as well as high-water pants , saddle-shoes, and jitter-bugging. The last three items are left only to those who agree to carry on these traditions religiously throughout the years. To the sophomores, the privilege of cracking their gum in Study Hall No. 2 and the honor of calling the Seniors-to-be George or Mable , as the case may be. To the freshmen, C Heaven help them, for they know not what they do J, we leave the warning: to be seen and not heard, by the upper- classmen especially. To the incoming freshmen, we leave our old assembly tickets, a cloud of dust, and lusty, Hi-Yoh Silver! Third, the following bequeath the following bequests to the following beneficiaries : Casanova Skriba leaves his football ability and his lackadaisical lovemaking to Bob Schwartz. Arnie Burke leaves his knack of managing things to Florence she- who-leersi' Moore. , Bud Giberson leaves his meaningless gestures to Snake Flanner. Dean Lucas leaves his attraction for the trees by the side of the road to Jack Arnold. Durk Blake leaves his astounding record of eight years in a four- year high school to Don rWarner. Berti Saunders leaves his sauve sophistication to Twilight Terbush.. Archie Beebe leaves his old Buick to the machine shop. Bob Segula leaves his explosive laugh to Charlotte Marshall. Dave Matthews leaves his droll- humor to Joe Wetzel. John Parker White leaves Pat Flanner his stylish way of wearing shirt tails. x ' Barb Scarlett leaves her personality smile to Janie Wiggins. Marg Martin leaves her way with the boys to Bobbie Ferris. Margie Bennett leaves her expressive eyes to Ann Lyon. Doc Parker leaves his mustache to the Fuller Brush Man.
