ZIMMERMANN HSIll'IIL'1' if one gnu! art of rmwcrxaliorzf' Chcsaning High School I-2 'i G4 Honor Students Q Captain . . . Carl Colando, Owosso senior, has been chosen Captain of the All State Football Team for 1936. The speed and active- ness which he possessed involved him in every play on the field. His aggressiveness and high calibre playing made him one of the most outstanding players on the team as well as in the state. Four Leiter' Mau . . . Salutatorian . . . The Sam Gurske is the only four letter man on his team. His expert diagnosis of opposing plays, and his capability in protecting his territory against forward passes won him this honor. He is also considered one of the best defensive fullbacks of the valley. Valedicforian . . . The Valedictorian of the class of 1937 is Evelyn Herscher. She will be eighteen years old on the day she is graduated. Evelyn made an outstanding scholastic record for the four years she has been in high school. She served as Treasurer of the Senior class, was a member of the Library Club, and has entered various other activities. She is the second mem- ber of her family to be Valedictorian, her brother, Arnold, having won that honor in 1935. Evelyn hopes to enter the University of Val- paraiso where she plans to specialize in literature. The Salutatorian for the class of 1937 is Josephine Gladden, having the remarkable score of 3.718 out of a possible 4. In addition to winning this honor she was chosen to repre- sent the Shiawassee, D. A. R., as this year's most outstanding senior. Josephine is known for her dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. During her four years in school she has participated in many of the school functions. Among other activities she was a member of the Library Club, and she took part in the Junior Play. She does not know definitely what she will take up, but she is planning to continue with her schooling and perhaps study journalism. recipients of the following awards had not been chosen when the Spic went to press: john Bell Cup, Y. O New Fires The annual Senior play, New Fires, was presented November 20 to a capacity audience. Stephen Santry, an author, played by John Garnett, inherits a small farm in the Missouri Ozarks. At his wits end to know what to do with his family, Cwho, he fears, have lost their grasp on the fundamental values of lifej, he invites them all to the farm and there amazes them by issuing the ultimatum that he who wants food and raiment must work for it. lflaine Hicks as Olive, his daughter, pretends sickness to be allowed to go back, but falls in love with Lawrence Jenkins, the doctor, and changes her philosophy of life. Marie Gorte, Stephen's wife, comes to a realization of his need for sympathy, and Jim Arcure, the older son, becomes interested in poultry raising and, with his wife, Helen Stanton, decides to live on the homestead. The two younger children, played by Iflda Nicholls and Bill Harrelson, provide much of the comedy. The parts of the servants were well portrayed by Ina Jane Turner, a widow, Anna Tomancik, a spinster, Willianm Coons and W'illiam' Baker, as Sid Sperry and his son Jerry, farm hands. Alice Ockerman played the part of Mary Marshal, a neighbor girl, Martha Mclntyre, her mother, and Victoria Petlach, Sid's wife, Angie. Patricia Robertson and George Grover were prompters. The Senior class owes much to Miss Theresa Combellack for her successful direct- ing, and to Mrs. Hazelle Braddock, class advisor. 38 Top Row-H. Kindlesperger, Fritsch, Dignan, H. Lyon, L. Wing. The Poor Fish This year's junior play, TIM Poor Fish, was presented April 16, in the high school auditorium. The Poor Fish was Sylvester Fish, a very superstitous young man, played by -lim Dignan. On his wedding day he calmly postponed his marriage to Maxine Gute because it was Friday, the thirteenth. He then took his best man, Halvard Lyon, and proceeded to a mountain resort promised him by his uncle, and found it occupied by Marcia Guilford, who had converted it into a rest cure sanitarium. -Sue Bicltford, lfthel Grace Marshall, arrived with her brother Billy, Leonard Beerman, also to claim the house. liurther complications arose when Maxine's car conveniently broke down near the house, and Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Fish, Sr., CHarry Kindlesperger and Mar- garet XVhitmanJ unexpectedly arrived to view it. The maid, lirances Armstrong, had everyone thinking the other was mentally unbalanced and the result was one of the most intensely humorous plays yet produced. Qther members of the cast were Ruth Bell, as Margaret Matters, a young girl suffering from a nervous disorder: Doro- thy Telfer, as lflla Shayneg Ardis Fox, Lola Payne, Mildred liilgas, Wfarda Jewel: Lu- cille Wfightman, Grace Fletcherg Lloyd Wiiig, justice Smithg and -lim liritsch as Ran- dall Chase. Doris Lutz was the prompter. The Alunior class sincerely appreciates the work of Miss Theresa Combellack, director of the play and Mr. Howard Shanafelt, class advisor. 39 Spic Staff . The League sponsors from two to four class teas a year, which give an opportunity for social training. This year the League financed the operetta, Bells of Bcfazzjolaisf, which was a new school activity. Other projects of the club are the Senior Breakfast, given in June, and the all-class parties. The sophomores won the championship. Members of the team were Emma Minarik QCD, Lillian An- drus, Dorothy Mack, Dorothy DeFrenn, Ardis Richard, Patricia Thorn, Helen Soucie, Thelma Lindbergh, Mildred Cartwright, Geraldine Jones, and Mary Lee Lamont. Next on the year's program was bowling. The freshman team, consisting of Vivian Harmon, Vivian Welte, Rebecca McCarthy, and Ellen Greene, surprised the school by walking off with the laurels. The high scorer was a sophomore, Betty Ash- munn. Following Christmas vacation, basketball occupied the center of interest. The seniors conquered the sophs after a hard struggle, winning by the slim margin of one point. The following girls made up the championship team: Victoria Petlach CCD , Virginia Fuller, Mary Merrill, Viola Raymond, Dorothy Reed, Ruth Sehlaaek, Mar- garet Schlaack, Vivian Harmon, and Thelma Richmond. Other sports yet to be played this year are indoor, tennis, and golf. For the second consecutive year, Owosso High School sent a team to the Mich- igan State College Basketball Playday, February 13. The earlier part of the morning was spent swimming. Then came basketball. Owosso lost a close and exciting game to Clarksville, 4-2, but defeated Ionia, ll-0. Members of the team were Virginia Fuller CCCJ, Bonnylyn Boulis QCCJ, Martha McIntyre, Mildred Mack, Victoria Petlach, Dorothy Reed, Barbara Scarlett, Ruth Schlaack, Lillian Andrus, Emma Minarik, Dar- rielyn Leffingwell, Viola Raymond, Dorothy Mack, and Kathryn Greenhoe. At one o'clock the girls attended a luncheon at the Union Building and later witnessed a fast basketball game between two college teams. Between halves there was a badminton match, a fencing exhibition, and a game of cage ball. On March 13, Owosso held a Basketball Playday of its own. Flint Central, Flint Northern, Saginaw Arthur Hill, and Bay City sent teams. Owosso was represented by the seniors-winners of the intramural basketball tournament. They lost to Arthur Hill by one point, but beat Flint Northern. After the last game was over, most of the girls went swimming. A cocoa was held in the cafeteria. Mrs. Willman, Mrs. Cournyer, and Mrs. Gebhart poured. 63 uni. ..' - 7?2 w 1 WT Qs -:X-N ,- ,gvgg ,A ,I ,lin 's . , ,M , , V+-4 'A ,MW LW!! .. .
