In athletics as in studies Victorious gates unfold. May each loyal son be Worthy Of the Blue and the Gold. We hail the conquering heros With our cheers and song, We will cheer them to the heavens With voices loud and strong. As they struggle through to victory With hearts so true and bold, While fighting for Owosso, And the Blue and the Gold. O. H. In the future we'll remember The golden days of old, As Alumni we'll do honor To the Blue and the Gold. S 1934 CIILASS PBEM Good bye, old pal, I said to himg As we shook hands to part. The days came back when he and I In high school got our start. And when the hardships came our way We battled them and won. I wonder can we conquer all The days not yet begun? Suppose we fail like other men Who are weakened by the strife, Give up our hope and happiness, Admit defeat in life. Have we obtained the strength we need To clear and fight our way? The night is dark and filled with gloom. Before the break of day We'll put our shoulders to the wheel To work, then work some more Sharing the load with those we know In the class of '34. -James Rathbun 9 JHQDSML The following are the members of the faculty and the courses which they most capably instruct: Bowen, LaVerna .......... TEACHERS' CLUB WOMEN'S CLUB UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ALUMNI 21 1934 SIIEN lllDlIQ IIZIILASS lItlIllllS'IlFlIDllQY Walking alone along a country road, I came upon a quaint cottage, covered with ivy, sitting a short distance away from the roadside. Being rather tired and also curious as to who might live there, I stopped, and leaning on the gate, called to the old woman who was sitting on the door- step. She beckoned me to come closer and when I reached the steps, asked me to come in. Sensing an air of mystery about her I did so and sat down in the chair she offered me beside the fireplace. The fact that I was a total stranger seemed not to bother her in the least for she immediately began talking to me almost as an old friend. She finally ofiiered to read my palm but I refused, explaining that I didn't believe in a person being able to read the future. At that she became very angry and declared that, she could not only read the future but also reveal the past. Although I thought such a thing impossible, to humor her I asked her to show me the days I spent in Owosso High School from the time I was a lonely freshman until I became a senior. Taking a box from the mantle she sprinkled some of the contents on the embers in the fireplace. Immediately a dense cloud of smoke aroseg and as she waved her hand, the smoke parted and the fol- lowing scenes unfolded in rapid succession. A bewildered group of freshmen were standing about in the halls of Owosso High, entirely ill at ease and gazing at each senior with mingled awe and wistfulness. I recognized several of them and realized that I was looking at the class of '34. As though in pity the smoke blotted out the pathetic scene, and then came fiashes of a class meeting in which Walter Brown was elected president, Betty Baker, vice-president, Marion Sawyer, secretaryg and Maxine Sweetland, treasurer. Miss Deuel was selected as class adviser, and also a motto, class flower and colors were chosen. Our first big party on February 27, 1931, from all appearances was a success even though it was given by mere freshmen. The year passed swiftly and soon we were sophomores with the follow- ing class officers: president, Marjory Chase, vice-president, Josephine Eggleston, secretary, Dorothy Sherman, and treasurer, Leon Montague, with Miss Deuel again our adviser. The next two scenes revealed our parties for the year. The first one, an all-class party, held as I remembered on December 14, 1931, and our next called The Depression Drag on April 8, 1932. Although several more incidents in our activities as sophomores were shown, they were rather indistinct in comparison, and I realized that the next two pictures would show the highlights of our year as juniors. 22 1934 SAIUUTATIUD IQY sue--l-e-vi Friends, Teachers and Fellow Students: We, the Class of 1934, cordially welcome you to our Class Day exer- cises. Your presence indicates your interest in our endeavors and we hope you will be able to sense our appreciation in bringing us up to this goal. This day commemorates our achievements in High School. It brings recollections of the past coupled with visions of the future. Already we are beginning to realize what additional tests are in store for us. This transition which we are experiencing is one in which we are choosing our own destinies to a greater extent than ever before, in fact, we are a generation that has an appointment with destiny. We live in a great age and we are put to the test to prove our worthiness. Will the youth of today let misfortunes hinder them in their pursuits? Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortuneg but great minds rise above it. We are graduating in a most important and significant era. The level of human knowledge has been raised far beyond any age in history. More and more completely, generations have passed on to generations the gath- ered experience of the past: Yet I doubt not through the ages one increasing purpose runs, And the thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns. Learning is incessant discovery and we should look upon life as a book where the turning of each page is some fascinating adventure. With this spirit of curiosity, we shall gradually find the truth and beauty of life. Progress can only be made by keeping some step, however stumbling-and following, until we can know some joy of living and sense some of the endless beauties of the universe in which we have been placed. --R. J. Stinson. 25 lllQll34ll - SIIENIIIIDIIQ MUIILASS 'llPliQ1ID llillltll IFEIZY After the absence of several years, I was back in Owosso attending the high school's alumni banquet. Because of the success of my latest novel, I was given the diflicult task of collecting data for a record of the graduates of the class of 1934. With a note book in one hand and a pencil in the other, I began making inquiries about an elegant lady in floating chiifons. I was told that it was that charming little movie actress, Arlene Matznick, while on her right was Lillian Getchell, her masseur. I heard that Dr. Davenport did wonder- ful work on Arlene's tonsils this spring. A pleasant chat with Kenneth Chandler, Orrin Beamish, Gerald Car- mody, and Fredrich Buehler disclosed that they were successful dog bis- cuit salesmen. I was quite impressed with Charles Milster, who is head butler at the White House. He and Ruby Smith, the First Lady's maid, were on a vacation. Adelaide Whitman, who lulls the President to sleep with her music, was unable to get away for the banquet. Joe Vaydik, Paul Rolando, Floyd Hiler, and Howard Perrine are life guards who believe in saving only the blondes. Helen Hart directs a follies chorus. She confided that Christine Bussel has entirely too much volume, and Rose Ellen Brooks, not enough, so she puts one on each side of Mary Raymond, who is pust right. Ruth Adams told me she plays for them with cotton in her ears. I learned a lot about movie stars from Joyce Ford, Mary Ellen Quirk, and Minnie Mae Warren. They're telephone operators in Hollywood. Max Osburn, a reminder of Babe Ruth, was discovered autographing baseballs. He was with the Big League catcher, Ralph Kendall. Dorothy Gates attends all the Big League games as sports reporter. Isn't that luck? My attention was arrested by two serious-faced gentlemen. I should have guessed that they were R. J. Stinson and Elmer Bisard, members of the President's brain trust. I broke up what appeared to be a committee of five. They proved to be the following members of the Farm Relief Board: Walter Graham, the president, and Orville Barnes, Wayne LeCureuX, Clayton Nelson, Vernon Reynolds. Jack Mero proudly told me that he was the India-rubber man of the Parker and Parson's Circus. His employers were not present. I found Maxine Bartz Lyon and the former Ellen Mathews advocating spinach for children. Wencel Soupal, Steven Roe, Kenneth Telfer, Edwin Ream, and Guy Stinson are members of the R. H. A. H. Commission, fRights of Husbands of the American Homel. A very diminutive lady in organdy was Virginia Elliot, the juvenile lead in a play house in New York. She gave me news from New York. Adeline McIntyre is a stylist there and creates all of Virginia's gowns. 26 1934 Phyllis Miner is one of her models. Louis Shapiro and Jerome Lebowski run an exclusive clothing store on Fifth Avenue. R-everend Zimmerman and Beryl Harvey sent greetings from Africa, where they are missionaries. It pepped me up to meet a group of very satisfied looking people from the Colony of Suppressed Desires, financed by Patricia Warner. Every- one could choose his or her own position. Gerald Warden was the happiest mayor I ever saw, while Jim Rathbun was the smiling political boss. Carl Koerner enjoys being a cop and yelling, Yeah, you! at Rex Rose, the speed demon. Dayton Rainey has a floor show featuring Blanche Nacov- sky, Pauline Parr, Doris Little, and Corda Redmond. Tom Sundquist and Claude Tinklepaugh are novelty dancers. I had a chance to compliment Harold York and Ray Steggal on their fine book, Restraining the Modern Generation , which was published by the Slaughter Publishing Company. Two other authors, Charles DeVoe and John Kashmer, modestly admitted having written a book on psychic research. Frank Osmer and Clifford Parrish patented a cure for spring fever, but they both were married the following spring. Ira Cooper sells their tonic in his drug store, and Frederica Koerner is his assistant. fShe never advises young men to buy this cure.J Charles Gladden told me all about the laboratory that Ralph Beattie, Joe Woodbury, and he have together. Mildred Azelton and Myrtle Allen are expert bottle washers there. I felt guilty eating roast pork while Genevieve Orser, Virginia Slater, Ruth McClish, and Helen Walker, the vegetarians, were starving beside me. Mary Benson is in charge of a matrimonial bureau in Russia. And is she busy? Frances Green is equally rushed in the divore bureau. Lynn Lemunyon writes testimonials for Tangee Lipstick. Quote: The flavor is sure to please. A little fellow with a big cigar proved to be Elmer Wing, a noted radio announcer. He was cold shouldering Orville Goward, the soft voiced teller of bed-time stories. Next to them was Miles Trumble from W. J. R. with Hugo Saarup, a member of his band. Lois Eckerle and Anita Ebert are running a respectable boarding house to protect young secretaries. Jo Eggleston and Edith McLaughlin told me they enjoyed its position across from some bachelor apartments. These apartments are well looked after by the manager, Victor Rowell. Victor is proud of having Frederick Goeckel as a tenant, as Fred is the only banker of repute left in Detroit. I next ran into the three dancing Yeast Sisters whom I remembered as Katherine Cline, Julia Demuth, and Delphine Brockway. And maybe their manager, Lloyd Conklin, didn't look scared of those three girls, Pep , V im , and Vigor . Donald Lahman, Paul Chlebo, James 1McCaffery, and Gerald Mogg had a perfectly shocking trip to Mars by light rays. Marjorie Wait and Bernice Cooper taught a class for prospective farmers' wives until they married a couple of Boston merchants. I asked Betty Baker all about her interior decorating business. Chuck Basso is her business manager, and Robert Dann heads the artistic staff composed of Jane Copas, Dorothy Fulton, Fred Eckerle, and Giles Cook. 27 1934 I was amused to hear two young men discussing love as a game, but they hastily introduced themselves as Elwin McEachen and Charles Chand- ler, the tennis champions. Next my roving eye lighted on three jocular men. They were the practicing attorneys, Hicks, Fletcher, and Rood. They practice golf. Barb Lyon, Maxine Sweetland, and Teressa Pollock are agents in Eu- rope for the Mae West Perfume Company. Bob Imhoff and Bob Soule tried to explain their non-rolling collar but- ton, which Jim Irby is financing. We heard that Chris Hornus is coach at California. Marguerite Hud- son told me, confidentially, that he paid her five dollars a game to stand down in front and yell. Alden Scott is a famous hockey player. He said he just couldn't stay 011' the ice. He has hired Vere Fisher to look after him. I left them to chat with Marjorie Alden. She has the problem column in a newspaper. She is sure it was Claude Alexander who asked if he should leave a scolding wife. Poor Claude! Paul Henzler is Speaker of the House now. He told me mournfully that it was diiiicult to keep Representative Walter from filibustering. My next encounter with some beauty specialists was embarrassing. Vivian Terry told me my hair was wrong, Evelyn Skutt advised about my eyebrows, Marie Lewis and Marjorie Thompson advised Pond's skin cream. Stanley Charchut, Edwin Moore, and Joe Yenik are professors who hope to retire by the time they are fifty. Normena Ockerman, Thelma Player, and Pauline Lenker run a bakery that makes husbands forget they married their wives for their cooking. Howard Jennings is a bit too cheerful for an undertaker, I think. Lucille Lingo and Lucille Sheldon run the Lucille Wig Shop. I was frankly puzzled by a woman with a divinely holy look. Could it be Norabel Northway? It was. She told me herself that with her revival meetings she had driven Aimee Semple McPherson out of California. Two of her choristers were with her, and I recognized them as Dorothy Huschen and Shirley Townsend. ' I also heard that Donald Miller and Irvin Hearth are installing a sprinkling system in the Sahara Desert. We received greetings from Virginia Schultz, Marie Schlaack, Helen Stahurski, Winifred Freeman, and Elizabeth Langdon who are in Iceland giving extensive courses in Keeping the Igloo Cozy. I was so worn out from talking to all these people that I could only mumble when Dorothy Sherman came tripping across the room. Hello, Dot , I murmured, what are you doing these days ? Why, I'm a nurse, she said with pride. What on earth is troubling you? You look a little peaked. Under Dorothy's timely administrations, I recovered and enjoyed im- mensely Mr. Cournyer's address, to which even that certain five per cent listened attentively. -Marjory Chase. 1934 SlIF,Nll1IDlQ GEULASS WIll,lli To all those whom these presents may concern, be it known that we, the Class of 1934, of the Owosso High School, County of Shiawassee, State of Foolishness, realizing that our days in the hall of learning are numbered and that our happy existence here is drawing to a close, in sound mind and body, under no threat or demand, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament, in which we set forth our bequests in the following manner: To our tolerated and beloved successors, the class of '35, we do most unwillingly grant o-ur troubles, our trials, our joys, our abode, and our A's together with the well-earned title of Senior in the hope that they will not find it necessary to Hout their newly acquired powers by sitting on telephone poles and waving flags. To the oncoming Juniors, we leave our good stand-in with the faculty, and with the advice to pay their class dues, that they may ever be prosper- ous even in times of depression , To the next year's Sophomores, we bestow the privilege to guard the little freshmen and keep them forever from straying from the straight and narrow path, and to advise them against the cruel and wicked ways of this world. Well-known individual members of the class wish to bequeath the following: Julia Demuth, her typing speed and accuracy to Betty Harris. Frederick Goeckel, his keen business ability and the editor's chair to Arnold Herscher. Marjorie Chase, her A's and her French pronunciation to Bettie Lucas. Josephine Eggleston, her quiet ways and charming manners to Re- becca Lord. Willie Parker, his witty whims and pesky tricks to Chandler Pinney, if the promise is made not to disgrace the student-body. Jack Mero, his role of clown to Raymond Ballou, along with sage advice not to indulge in too many bananas during one performance. The spooners of the past year bequeath the nooks and corners of the building so long as they are not discovered and nooks tell no tales. Our friend and counselor, Mr. Cournyer, we appoint as the sole exe- cutor of this, our last will and testament. Subscribed and sworn to before me, on June 19, 1934. -Arlene Matznick. 29 IILQDEML Slplllllg SIiAxlFllF Sie: ----lasra EDITOR-IN-CHIEF .... --- FREDERICK GOECKEL Assistant H--. ..,, ............ The cost of publishing a Spic this year would have been much greater than in the past three years. After due consideration of the class's finances, it was decided to put out a Spic on a smaller scale. This year's senior edition was to be limited to the senior class and contain no advertisements. The title, The Senior Spic , was chosen as a fitting one. The staff has accomplished as much as possible with the resources available. We have put forth our utmost effort to get the best book possi- ble for the least cost to our classmates. Although we were unable to put out a book as large as some of the past Spics, we have put out a Worthy book, and have continued the custom of an annual senior publication. We present this to our class and friends as a Senior Spic which con- sists of the most worthwhile results of our high school days, and which is put forth in the spirit that senior editions have ever been put forth. 30 lIl9lD34t 'wfkllilllplll ,IIESA Ilfl4IiYlIE'l Applesauce , prcsented in the high school auditorium, December 7, 1933, as the annual Senior Play, was a distinct stage success of the year. The humorous plot deals with a serene and envied youth, Bill McAllis- ter, Whose chief asset is applesauce . This gets him all the essentials of life, even a girl. Hazel is engaged to Rollo Jenkins, but Bill, in an ex- tremely funny scene talks Rollo out of his engagement by playing up the great cost of married life. Bill marries Hazel with 36.00 in his pocket, believing that two can live as cheaply as one, for Happlesaucei' is cheap and Bill is no lazy linguist. The leading roles of Bill and Hazel were exceptionally well acted by Paul Henzler and Virginia Elliot, respectively. They were capably assist- ed by Miles Trumble, Elmer Wing, Phyllis Miner, Aubrey Hicks, and Dorothy Hueschen. The play was under the competent supervision of Miss Isabelle Rayen. Much of the financial success of the play is attributed to the business staff headed by Frederick Goeckel. 31 M934 SRNWDRlWQDNl The Senior Prom, sponsored by the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-four, proved to be one of the most beautiful and successful parties ever held in the Owosso Armory. Passing through a long blue and white domed arch-way, one was sur- rounded by all the beauties and splendors of a June night, with a full moon rising over the orchestra on the stage. The ceiling was covered with ripples of blue and white with stars peeping through. Big numerals were placed above the stage which was lighted indirectly. Flowers were in huge baskets and in two large silver urns on either side of the auditorium. Of course, ginger ale was served. But as the crowd proved to be harder drinkers than usual, it vanished long before the evening was over. The grand march was a beautiful display of crisses and crosses. It was led by Paul Henzler, president of the senior class, and Rebecca Lordg followed by Barbara Lyon, vice-president, and Gordon Nutson. The fine orchestra added one of the greatest attractions of this party. Ray Gorell and his Book Cadillac Orchestra from Detroit featuring an amazing piano player. The patrons and patronesses were Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Willman, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Cournyer, Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Miner, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Elliot, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. The score was 66 to 0 in favor of the Blue- Golds. Captain Charlie Ford carried off scoring honors by scoring six touchdowns, while Lynch scored four more. The blocking was the best that an Owosso team has done in years. Every player carried out his blocking assignments to perfection. Coach Rabe should be congratulated on the fine showing of his team's blocking. Due to some poor officiating, Owosso had to accept a 7 to 6 defeat at the hands of the Bay City Wolves in the Wolves stadium. Ford broke away for a seventy yard run and, apparently, a touchdown in the dying minutes of the fourth period which would have given Owosso a 13 to 7 victory. Here the officials detected a penalty which everyone thought was unfair to Owosso. The game was played in a driving rain which soaked the field long before game time. Conditions were said to be the worst ever seen at the Bay City stadium, and handicapped the Trojans' running at- tack. Although outplayed in the first half, Owosso thoroughly outplayed Bay City the last half. Bay City scored her lone touchdown in the second period. Taking the ball on their thirty yard line, they pushed their way to a touchdown and added the extra point. Owosso scored her six points in the third quarter. Taking the ball on Bay City's thirty-five yard line, the Blue-Golds pushed their way to a touchdown but failed to add the extra point. Owosso outpunted the Wolves consistently. Due to a lack of scoring punch, Owosso had to accept a scoreless tie game with Arthur Hill's Lumberjacks on Saginaw's Alumni Field. In the second period, Owosso failed to score from the one yard line which consti- tuted its major scoring threat of the afternoon. Arthur Hill put up an inspired defense all during the game. It was somewhat unusual for the Lumberjacks to be the underdogs. Each team tried desperately to score via the air but gained little success. Again Owosso outpunted her oppon- ent. Where Owosso looked weak on offense, she certainly made up for it in defense. Arthur Hill got inside Owosso's ten yard line just once and then was held to no gains at all. The school spirit was at a high pitch and a large number of fans and students followed the team to Saginaw. Inspired by the biggest football rally ever held here, Owosso held Flint Northern's State championship eleven to a six to nothing count. The game was played at Athletic Park in a driving rain, but eight hundred loyal fans and students stood by the team to see them hold the highly 35 lllQlEMl touted Vikings to a lone touchdown. Northern's touchdown came as a re- sult of a blocked punt in the second period and recovery on Owosso's one yard line. Here, the Blue-Gold line held for two downs, but Flint scored on the third down. Owosso threatened in the first period when Jelinek block- ed a punt and fell on it in Northern's territory. Later a pass fell between Marva and Lynch which looked like a certain touchdown for Owosso. Both were less than five yards from the goal line and would have easily made a touchdown if the pass had been completed. Half of Owosso's gains were made by Henzler, while Reed and Osborn showed great defensive play in the line. Led by Bob Kolbe, Eastern's All-State halfback, Saginaw defeated the Trojans at Athletic Park, thirteen to seven. In this game the Blue-Golds faced probably the strongest passing attack displayed by any team in the Saginaw Valley. Saginaw scored first when she took the ball on Owosso's thirty-four yard line in the first period and marched to a touchdown. Sag- inaw failed to add the extra point. Starting the second half, Owosso smashed her way to a touchdown after taking the ball on the fifty yard line. Henzler added the point on a line play which put the Trojans ahead, seven to six. Here Saginaw showed her power by going sixty-three yards for her second touchdown after an exchange of punts. A pass of thirty-seven yards to Kolbe put them in position to score and they went off tackle to score. This time Eastern added the extra point to make the final score, thirteen to seven. With the aid of Ballou's passing, Owosso won her first Saginaw Val- ley contest against the Pontiac Chiefs by the score of twenty to nothing. Owosso scored its first touchdown in the second period on a beautiful pass from Ballou to Waters who ran twenty-one yards to a touchdown. Prior to this Owosso had been held on Pontiac's six yard line. After an exchange of punts, Owosso finally scored. Due to two fifteen yard penalties, the Trojans lost a scoring opportunity in the third period. In the fourth per- iod, the Chiefs took the ball to Owosso's four yard line but Henzler inter- cepted a lateral pass and ran ninety yards to score on a most brilliant play. Soon Owosso took the ball on Pontiac's thirty-four yard line. After Henz- ler and Ford had gained twenty yards around the ends, Ballou then passed to Marva on the goal line. Ford scored two extra points on end runs to make the total score twenty to nothing. Playing in Atwood Stadium for the first time, Owosso and Flint Cen- tral played a scoreless tie on a snow covered gridiron. The game was hard fought with the Trojans making six first downs to Central's four. Flint reached Owosso's seventeen yard line in the third period but here Waters fell on a fumble. Central's only other scoring threat came as a result of a blocked punt on Owosso's ten yard line. Central again failed to score and Owosso took the ball after a pass had grounded in the end zone. The Blue-Golds threatened to score in the fourth period but Central held also. The game was played in four inches of snow and both teams were greatly handicapped. The Trojan line again played excellent football. Lynch and Henzler shared ball carrying honors for Owosso. 36 TLEEIU3-4Il On another snow covered field, Owosso defeated St. Johns at Athletic Park by the score of seven to nothing. The Blue-Golds scored the only touchdown of the game in the second period when Marva recovered a fum- ble by Carter, visiting fullback. Gurske hit the line twice and went over for a touchdown the second time. Lynch added the extra point on a line play off guard. The rest of the game was a battle of defense between the twenty yard lines. St. Johns again proved itself a worthy opponent. Thus ended one of the most successful seasons our football team has experienced in recent years. The Blue-Golds played a stiff schedule. Six Class A teams in the Saginaw Valley were met. St. Johns, a Class B team of repute, was also played. The only team which allowed the Trojans a breathing spell was Chesaning which opened the season at Athletic Park. Our team won one, lost three, and tied two games in the Valley League. With a few breaks the team might have won or tied all of its games. The Flint Northern game bears out this statement. The State champions were held to the lowest score, six to nothing, in playing Owosso that any team held them to during the season. ...1 TRACK Coach Glen Mason's thinclads were led by Captain Claude Tinkle- paugh, who was the only letter winner from last year's team. The season opened with a dual meet with Michigan School for the Deaf on the new cinder track at Athletic Park. The Blue-Golds came through with a 78 to 26 victory. The following Saturday Ionia was met here and was con- quered 57 to 47. On May 11th, the Blue-Golds met their first Valley foe in Flint Northern at Flint. Northern won this meet 74 to 30. In the regional meet at Flint Central on May 19th, Owosso failed to place a man in the finals. Cartwright was high point man for the Blue-Golds with 47 points in three meets. Out of a squad of fifty men, forty-five are available for track competition next spring. There were eighteen major letter winners and only three are graduating seniors. With such an abundance of material for next spring. Owosso's prospects for a winning track team seem very good. . BASlIElBAlLlL Due to the building of the football stadium at Athletic Park, there was no suitable baseball diamond available for use this spring. The finan- cial condition of the Owosso High School Athletic Association was rather low, and this constituted another strong reason for discontinuing baseball fonat least one more season. Our baseball coach, Jack Rabe, expressed his belief that the Blue-Golds would be represented again on the diamond next year in the Saginaw Valley league race. 37 1934 liB1AkSllhillE,llllIl32ZkltlIl. The coach had very few veterans around whom to build a team and this showed up very obviously in the games. However, the same team with the experience garnered in this year's com- petition should be able to place a strong quintet on the floor next season. Owosso swung into action against St. Johns on the local court, Decem- ber 19. Here we took our first victory by a score of nine to seven in a close guarding affair. On January 5, our squad traveled to Saginaw Eastern for its first taste of Class A competition. Getting off to a poor start in the first half, the Trojans were defeated 25 to 14. On January 9, Flint Central came to town, and, after ahard fought battle, the Blue-Golds succumbed, 23 to 18. Johnson, the Indians' big cen- ter, was the main cog in Flint's team. Owosso's weakness in this game was making their free throws. On Friday night of the same week, the Trojans took their third straight defeat. This time they met Bay City in the upstate town. The Wolves rolled up sixteen points before the Blue-Golds could get under way. The final score was 23 to 10. The highly touted Pontiac team was met on the Senior Court on January 16. Owosso started slowly and Pontiac had a lead of 12 to 2 at half time. The Trojans played the Chiefs even in the last half. The game ended with Owosso on the short end, 27 to 14. 38 1934 The following week Flint Northern was played in the vehic city and they decisively trounced our floundering team. 34 to 10. The Blue-Golds were unable to penetrate the Vikings' defense. On January 19, Arthur Hill, with one of the strongest lineups in the league, put down an Owosso uprising to win by the score of 27 to 13. The Lumberjacks worked their tip-off plays amazingly fast and scored twelve points in the first three minutes of play. We again clashed with Saginaw Eastern and they took home another victory to the tune of 22 to 13. The Saginaw quintet was exceptionally fast and clever. The Trojans fought them on even terms until towards the end of the game when they weakened. A ray of hope was thrown into the Camp of Troy when Owosso opened its game with Bay City with surprising speed and was leading the Wolves by five points in the last quarter of the game played on February 9. How- ever, in the last minutes of the game, the team again slumped, and the Wolves suddenly came to life. Zacharko, the stocky guard, sunk two long shots to put Bay City in the lead which they did not relinquish. The final score was 22 to 16. After another nip and tuck battle, Owosso managed to eke out its second victory of the year by the score of 24 to 20. The St. Johns team played their usual brand of inspired ball against the Blue-Golds. The Trojans met Arthur Hill on February 16. The Lumberjacks' height proved too much for our lads and they bowed in defeat by a 31 to 18 margin. The Blue-Golds led through the first two thirds of the game but the Hill-toppers spurted in last half of the third quarter to cinch game. This game marked the last scholastic action for Ralph Kendall, Paul Henz- ler, and Bob Imhoff, who finished their eight semesters at this time. On February 24 the basketeers lost to Pontiac by a score of 34 to 11. The Blue-Golds' offense could not get started on the Chiefs' large fioor. Flint Northern took the measure of the Blue-Golds on the local floor by a score of 38 to 12. Owosso's offense was checked at all times. With only one game remaining to be played, the boys went to Flint to meet Flint Central. The Trojans were determined to win their first Class A game of the season. However, once again fate was against them and they lost by the score of 31 to 18. The Blue-Golds held the Eskimos even in the first half, but they weakened during the last half. The varsity reserves, who played only two scheduled games, presented anstrong front. In two games with St. Johns reserves, they scored forty- nine points while holding their opponents to eleven points. At the close of the scheduled season an interesting tournament was staged among the varsity and sophomore-freshman players. The players were placed on teams according to their classes. The seniors swept away all honors in the tournament by taking the measure of the sophomores and the juniors. Later, they accepted a challenge from the faculty and also defeated them, Thus they reigned as champions of Owosso High. 39 1199341 JIUIEN N lllS Owosso High's tennis squad, coached by Allen Montgomery, was the defending champions in the Saginaw Valley this year. After getting off to a bad start, the team came back to win their last four matches and to tie for second place in the Valley race. In the regional meet held at Flint Central, the doubles team of Rundell and Moore went to the finals before they were defeated. Prospects for next season's team are very bright in view of the fact that all letter winners are returning. The letter winners were Chandler, Garner, Moore, McEachen, Rundell, Barnes, and Conger. Vaydik was the only veteran left from last year's squad. The team was inexperienced but played through a stiff schedule. Just before the Spic went to press, the team had won one match, tied one, and lost seven. The members and their ranking in order were as follows: Vaydik, Corrcoran, James Hicks, A. B.
