Today we seniors are looking forward eagerly to walking into the adult scene that is our modern world. In fact we have been practicing this step ever since the day we entered upon the world of the four R's, and began to discover its unknowns. Some of us began our educational exploration rather apprehensively, others reluc- tantly or shyly, but all of us eagerly faced our first problem - Why am I here? Where am I going? What is life all about? The little catechism we used in the primary grades gave us the answers. We found that our purpose in life was to know, love, and serve God in this world so as to be happy with Him forever in heaven. Throughout our years in grade school we explored further into our first lesson. We prepared ourselves to achieve the purpose of our existence, the attainment of the vision of God, by living a life of faith in hope and charity. Our high school career began with apprehension on the part of some, re- luctance on the part of others, shyness on the part of still others, but with eagerness on the part of all. We looked forward to planning a course of studies that would prepare us to take our place in life. Reviewing our first lesson we realized that we must prepare not only for our work in this world, but especi- ally for our place among the citizens of heaven. To do this we knew we had to lay a firm foundation for Christian living, the love of God through faith and hope. During our high school religion course we stressed the necessity of these virtues to achieve our eternal destiny. We arrived at a deeper realization of Faith, which opens our eyes to the true splendor of God and man and gives us vision, of Hope, which gives us courage to buildg of Charity, which unites us to God Himself from Whom we derive the knowledge of truth and the assurance of happiness. Now our lesson is ended, and we are going into the wide world with eager- ness and confidence. Our first lesson is ended, its application continues. We have our assignment, our challenge: Be men and women of humble faith in God, of firm hope, and of constant love for God, having the assurance of a full per- spective on life and a View of time in the light of eternity. THUS ENDETH OUR FIRST LESSON Z
