It is in the spirit of true devotion and appreciation that we dedicate this 1938 Tom Tom to Mrs. Sada M. Turner, our loyal guide and companion. VVords cannot express our gratitude to her for the many hours of unselfish participation in school activities. The success of our Senior plays, numerous social functions and our newly organized Journalism Club are all due to her untiring efforts. VV ell may we look with a certain complacency upon the achievements of our athletes, scholars, and musicians. Linley Grant and Fred Livermore, with the assistance of many other seniors, have upheld our name on the football field. Lyle Smith and George Taylor lent color and speed to our basketball team. Every time an exam came along, we skimmed over it blithely, with at least five people on the high honor roll, nearly one-third of the schoolls honor students. Our musicians are too numerous to mention. It may suffice to say that they make up a very large part of the orchestra and chorus. Dulcy,'l the Senior play was a knockout, dramatically, socially, and financially. This was due, largely, to the efforts of those two impish senoritas, Betty Frank and Tina Tilly, and that grand old actor, Charlie Truman. Under the capable supervision of Miss Dean and Mr. Albert Hubbard, our finances have been enlarged and preserved. Look us over! The Uwego team was made 1113 entirely of veterans, Knox being the only man to be replac-ed this year. His shoes were very ably filled by Kenneth Alexander. The team was mueh smaller in stature tl1a11 some of her opponents, but the fast pass work Hllll superior guarding of Owego put her ahead of her larger oppo11e11ts. ln the sec-ond game of the season, Owego gave .lohnson City the best game in some years. Owego was out in front at. the half, but Johnson City eame through to Win by a very small margin ol' two points. Owego triumphed over Endieott. 25 to 22. During the season Owego was tied with the Heights for the league 1-hampionship. The final game was played at Elmira Heights before the largest erowd i11 the history of that sehool. Owego was unable to 1-omplete their free tosses, and the Heights eked out the small vietory of 22 to I9 over the lndia11s. Despite the bitterness ot' this defeat, the next night Owego went to the seetionals illlil beat Moravia 33 to 22 o11 tl1e Boynton Junior lligh Sehool eourt. Heartened by this vietory, the Red and Blue rolled over their old rival, Waverly, by a gigantie sf-ore of SI to 34. The pass work ot' the Indians proved too mueh for Walton and Owego rode o11 to vietory, piling up a seore ol' 46 to 33. Mueh of the ereditt for t-he team's sueeess goes to the Captain, Charles Hoskins, whose able leadership and seoring ability were inspiring to the players. lloskins piled up a total ot' 159 poi11ts d11ri11g the season. The 1938 team is made up entirely of veterans, and should enjoy a successful season. The other teams in the league will be handicapped by the loss of regulars through graduation. The members of this year's team are: Fitts, Taylor, Lowry, Boyd and Knox. TRACK Track was revived at the O. F. A. in 1937 after a lapse of nearly ten years. About twenty candidates reported at the opening of the season. Owego journeyed to Troy for its first track meet of the year. The next meet that Owego entered took place at Endicott. The boys' hopes were raised somewhat by this meet as one of them won a first place, and another received a fourth place. The next meet that Owego entered was the sectional at Ithaca. The team's expectations were not too high for this meet, but they came through with flying colors by winning first place. The prospects for the year 1938 are only fair as several members of the 1937 team were graduated last June. GULF The O. F. A. fared a little better last year in golf. Except for the return of Donald Monroe and Victor Wolslegel, the team was made up of new men. This team lost, five and Won two games, winning from Cortland and Endicott. The outlook for the 1938 season is especially bright. The team is composed almost en- tirely of veterans. This year's squad is composed of: Grant, Wolslegrel, Jamesson, Miller, Espe and lVlunroe. 37 Przrzonu FRANK VICARIO Howi: RPZX'NOIiDS SIMONS Pi:DRo Rows RAUCH Ross:NGRAN'1' WoLsLi:o14:i. HAsT1NGs GIRLS' HOCKEY The intra-mural hockey league proved an exciting affair this year with the juniors and sophomores battling for top honors all the way. At the end of the season they were tied, each having won three games, lost one and tied one. A play-off between the two teams resulted in a last minute win by the sophomores, which gave them first place. Excellent hockey material this year made possible an outstand- ing all-school team. Their season was much different from last year's for they ended up with one win and a tie. The Keystone Junior College game was the best to their way of thinking for they won 2-o. The lindicott game this year ended with the score tied o-o. Miss D1-:A N, Vnach C5IRLS' BASKETBALL Such a large group reported for basketball that for the first time in history, each class had two teamsfeight teams divided into two leagues. The first league was composed of more experienced players, and the second league of beginners. The seniors walked off triumphantly with all the honors, winning both leagues. We found out, however, that we cannot carry on a large intra-mural program and compete with other schools as well. We learned this when Keystone Junior College came down and handed us a 45-3o defeat. The girls were in there every minute playing good basketball against older and more experienced girls. After the game the O Club served refreshments to both teams. The less said about the Endicott games the better. They won on our court by the narrow margin of 15-13. At Endicott, they won 37-25. TUR,NlfIli This year, at the request ot' representatives from the loeal papers, the Times and the HGazette, a journalism elub was formed at the Owego Free Aeademy. This I-lub 1-onsists of twenty-one juniors and seniors and a reporter from ear-h ol' tlIe various elasses from the seventh grade through the senior elass whose duty it is to write editorials, features, sports events and news stories. These appear eaeh week in the two lof-al papers. This is the first time that an undertaking of this sort has been attempted at the Owego Free Aeademy. From 1928 until the present time the journalistic' abilities ot' the students have been presented in the O-Hi-News and later in the Pow Wow. These two papers were written, typed, printed and designed by the staff. The members of the Journalism Club appreeiate the interest that the HTimes and Gazette have shown in their work and hope that their efforts have proved satisfaetory. 48 M ,x111AN S.
