History I fx The institution now known as the Oviedo High School has an in- ' - school was organized with the children of three families, five h Lees, and one Bobbie Shafter. 'st fl iw 1- . g teresting history reaching back to 1876, when the first public n if ::!l ii if lang' The two Lees were Theo and Wiley. Mr. Theo Lee is living here today, and tells many interesting details of Oviedo's early school days. This first school was located on the old Orlando road near Old Bear Gulley, and was taught by Miss Julia Galden. The Nixes moved , and the school was closed, but was soon re-opened in the home of Miss Galden's mother, about the location now known as Clonls Quarters. A third school was soon opened in an abandon ed double-pen log house located in front of what is now Dick Mitchell's residence. This was taught by a lady of forgotten name from Georgia. The next year Miss Myrtle Harris from Sanford taught, but the next, not enough pupils were available for a school. Mr. Lee and his brother were then boarded down at Ft. Christmas for the next two years, so they might attend school there, Christmas being the nearest school to Oveido. This was in 1887. The third school house in Oviedo was built at Brack Pond on or near the site of the present handsome residence of Mr.Ted Estes. Later the building was , .. . changed into a residence, and it has recently been greatly enlarged - ' ' and emproved into an attractive residence, occupied by Mr. Thos. s 15' Q E Daniell, Sr. ' .5 This school on Brack Pond was taught by Mr. Wallace Somerville, l and he was followed by Mr. Jim Caruthers, who. HCC01'diDg 10 MI. LCS. chewed tobacco all the time. Miss Margaret Dart, a Canadian taught here later. In the early '90's, the building now occupied by the colored school was built south of town in the neighborhood of the Pat Brown residence today, but on the opposite side of the road, and a little farther south. This was a two room good frame building, and its first teacher was Miss Jessie Brown. In the summer of 1899, this building was moved to a new site east ofB. G. Smith's residence and was improved by the addition of a third room. Some of the oldsters here remember that Mr. John McCulley had the contract to move with it for the sum of 3100. A few years later this building was again lag! BPM moved to the present site of Oviedo High School. It is interesting j tlgff,-1.21, U t to recall the names of many of the teachers who labored in this building. They are the following: Miss Proctor, Miss Steinmeyer, the grandmother of warren McCall, Junior, who is a senior in O. H. S. this year, Miss Ruth Bumby, Mrs. Beyer, our own T. W. Lawton, Miss Ethel Delaney, Miss Rinalden, Mr. Dollins, Miss Annie Hinkle, Mr. M. J. Okerlund, Mr, Hatch, Mrs. Nita Crawford, Miss George Lee, Miss Julia Lee. In 1922, this building again was moved to the colored section of town, and made into a high school for progressive colored citizens. ln 1922, also our present brick building of four rooms and auditorium was constructed. It has had five more rooms added since, as well as an agricultural building, a gymnasium, a lunch room, and a shop. The whole splant houses a fully accredited high school today, as well as the elementary grades. The campus is spacious and contains excellent tennis courts, X baseball field, andample playgrounds for the elementary children. Mr. W. A. Teague, our popular and efficient principal, has served in his present capacity for nine years. He was preceeded by several excellent principals, who laid the ground work for a good high school. Notable among ,M these was, H. J. Laney, who was first to have the school accre- dited. He was followed by ten years of faithful and efficient work by Mr. R. F. Cooper, now one of the county school trustees. 1--li I ' 1 4. Our students make good in college, and at one time, Oviedo had 4- A' six students in college on scholarships won by competitive ex- Vmffvf H aminations. Some of the finest citizens of the town Of Oviedo, the county, he state, and the nation have been through Oviedo High School. Some of them are going to deserve a place in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. A Parent-Teachers' Association was organized about 1924. It has been a great asset to the school, orgar-izing our first lunch program and purchasing our first movie machine. It has provided play ground equipment, health clinics, stage furniture, and has done many other valuable things, not the least of which have been the excellent programs provided for the meetings. Oviedo citizens are proud of their school, its history, its accomplishments, and its promising future. Annis C. Thompson uf : A Teacher in Oviedo High School :ff ,551 for thirty three years. Leona: Sorry I'm late. I'll be dressed in a moment. Johnnie: No hurry now, I'll have to go home and shave again. Corporal Duda: Now, Private, if you stood with your back to the north, and your face to the south, what would be on your left hand? Private Wheaton: Fingers. Bo: This party is awful dull. I think I'll go home. Mickey: Fine old boy, that will sure help, Shirley: Coach, what do you call a man who drives a truck? Coach: That all depends on how close he comes to me. Cornelia: Whenever I'm in the dumps, I get myself a new hat. Georgene: I was wondering where you got them. Lost: A five dollar bill by a working woman tied in a knot. Lost: Green fountain pen by a man half full of ink. For ourselves and for all the alumni of the school we wish to express our very deep and heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Annis C. Thompson for the unselfish service to us which she has rendered for the last thirty four years. Her influence will reach out into the coming years' in a never ending flow through the students whose lives she has helped to mold. We hope that her years of retirement will be many and that they will be filled with the happiness and rest that she well deserves. ZX We Salute Gif We wish to pay tribute to our retiring superintendent, Mr. T. W. Lawton, whose predominating interest for thir- ty five years has been the schools of Seminole County. Under his supervision we have kept abreast with progress in the educational world so that we are better prepared to meed the problems we face after graduation. The personal contacts we have had with him have made us able to call him friend as well as benefactor. May the pleasures of his retirement equal the service he has given to the schools. ,Annual Staff JO ANN FLEMING - - WALTER DUDA - - - NORMAN FORE - - - RICHARD LLEWELLYN EMMETT TANNER - - - MICKEY FLEMING - - - CORNELIA WEITMON JIM WHEA TON ----- WARREN MCCALL - - PAUL MIKLER - - - - - - -- Editor-in-Chief - - Business Manager -------Typist - - Joke Editor - - - - - Poet - - Prophet - - - - - Historian - - - - -Sports Editor Cla ss Photogra pher - - -Annual Sponsor - - U I5 ' 1 44 X1 I.: ' F 7-1. After winning our first game, some of our players were out be- cause of sickness, We lost the second game which was with Groveland. After this we really started practicing our passing, foul shots, and rebounds. Our top scorer this year is Shirley Jones, with 211 points.Georgene Parker follows with 128. Our record so far is eight wins and two losses. This is the best season's record we have ever had. With this record we hope to get in the Central Florida Conference and maybe bring home the trophy . Forwards this year are: Captain Georgene Parker, Shirley Jones, Ann Leinhart, Ann Pierson, Dorothy Simmons, and Shirley Malcolm. Guards are: Co-Captain Jo Ann Fleming, Cornelia Weitmon, Joan Brown, Pat Walker, and Nadine Bostick, Hays 'l6'ask efball The 1953 Lion quintet is another well balanced team which hopes to win a tournament and break the old jinx. The team was plagued by injures early in the season, but at present, is enjoying a string of ten consecutive victories. Our season record is eleven victories and only two losses. Only Edgewater of Orlando, and Winter Park were able to defeat us in close games. As we go to press Oviedo is leading the Central Florida Con- ference with a 10-0 record. Our nearest rival is Mount Dora with a 7-2 record. The success of our team may be attributed to fine teamwork. Each player performs his job well. Johnny is our high scorer. GRADUATION comes soon. Then what -- college? A Job? Military Service? Whatever your plans, you'll become more and more aware of the importance of life insurance. Perhaps you know of someone who will go on to college because wise parents provided funds for education through a policy with the New York Life Insurance Company. You'll want to know about other ways in which life insurance can help you meet adult responsibilities. For 26 years it has been my privilege to be a life insurance counsellor for the men and women of Sanford and of Seminole County. As I have served many of your parents, so do I look forward to serving you as adult members of our com- munity.
