' History: A German and a Russian were fishing on opposite sides of a river that divided the Russian and American zones. The German caught fish after fish, while the Russian didn't get a bite. Finally, the Russian yelled across the river, How is it you catch fish and l get none? The German thought a minute, then replied, I guess on your side they are afraid to open their mouths. Ted: If I'd known that tunnel was going to be so long I'd have kissed you. Bettye: Gracious! Wasn't that you? When gramma had her callersg They met with timid heart. And when they- sat together, They sat this far ..... I ................ apart! When granddaughter's boyfriend calls. He greets her with a kiss. And when they sit togetherg They sit realcloselikethisl Nina: Thanks for the hug! Jim: Oh, the pressure was all mine! He had choked her. She was dead, there was no doubt about it. He had listened to her dying gasp. Now, she was cold -- cold as the hands of death. Yet in his anger he was not convinced. Furiously he kicked her. To his amazement she gasped, sputtered, and then began to hum softly. Just a little patience is all it takes, Walter, remarked Mrs. Teague from the back seat of the car. ?aem Our class in number is very small, Two boys and seven girls in all. We have the scholarship and the pulchritudeg To our teachers we never have been rude. Our dear O.l-l.S. will long remember, Our senior year here beginning last September. Richards 6 pw In the summer of 1961 after nursing for seven K years in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, I was called out on the night of July 4, to make Q57 ' V room for some patients injured in an automobile accident on the highway leading into the city. I S was stunned out of my usual calm self-possession when I discovered that the most critically injured X if X person was Norma Jean Hamil. She had gone out to write up the Independence Day celebration at Lexington for the Boston Tribune, as she was their most efficient news reporter. She had a broken leg, a broken arm, and inter- nal injuriesg but because of her strong constitution she made a quick recovery. As we were talking over old times one day before she left the hospital, she told me that Bettye Aulin was secretary to the business manager of the Boston Tribune, that she was drawing a handsome salary, and was highly regarded by the entire staff. But wouldn't we expect that of efficient Bettye? Before long she will probably be running the office ---if she doesn't decide to become a homemaker. The tall, dark, handsome executive in her office seems eager to make other plans! Not having had a vacation since I graduated from dear old O.H.S. , I decided to get a leave of absence for the winter and spent it with relatives in Florida. Of course, I made a bee line for Oviedo. There I learned the news of my old classmates of '51. Hazel Rutherford was happily married to Clayton Hasty, they had two boys, five and three, and a little daughter of one year. They are living in a huge hacienda ad- joining their cattle ranch on the prairie, the one formerly owned by Charles Lee and Sammy long, but Hazel still remained her sweet self, unaffected by this sudden wealth. I met Donald Hardy one day on the streets of Orlando, and stopped for a little chat about old times. He said that he and Juanita were living on the old Bachelor Estate in Winter Park, and he invited me to spend the weekend with them. l-le has become a professor in mathematics, and is now teaching at Rollins College, although he is still interested in the celery game in Oviedo. One day as I was driving along enjoying the sunshine and scenery, I suddenly stop- ped, without signaling, to better enjoy the view over Lake Monroe. Suddenly a car smashed into me from the rear, and to my surprise the angry voice of Charlie, Ir. pro- ceeded to tell me just what kind of woman driver I was. He used adjectives that he hadn't learned in the English class, but they were most effective at that time. He hadn't recognized me, but I knew that voice the minute I heard it. When I made my- self known to him. he apologized and offered to pull my disabled car in to his Fixit Shop in Sanford, at no cost to me-- the same generous Charlie. I asked Charlie about Sadye Beth, who had had the same ambition I had to become a nurse. He said she had married Edward Duda and that for a wedding present Mr. Duda had presented them the Duda sawmill and cattle ranch in Cocoa, Florida. To- gether they are making it pay and have two children already. During my weekend visit with Donald and Juanita, I read a letter from Nina, in which she told about holding the position of athletic director at Brenau College for girls in Gainesville, Georgia. Her current heart throb is the coach of Gainesville High School. Will wedding bells ring soon for Nina? Our songbird, Dorothy Malcolm, married in June 1951 just after graduation. Her color is now Lavender, but sometimes -- only just sometimes -- she is a little blue for the old crowd and the good old days at O.H. S. Her husband is now manager of Florida Power Corporation, and their brood of three little songbirds chase away those blues. Of course, I had to visit O.H.S. before leaving. There I found the school had grown so large that a full time coach was neededg so Coach Mikler had been relieved of teaching history and bragging about Fort Bragg at the same time, and was in his new position which requires less wind and more exercise. 'Rah for Coach! Soon after this visit to O.H.S. I returned to my position well pleased to know that the members of the class of '51 had each succeeded in his chosen life's path. GF YQ? 4 N . At this writing we have a better re- cord than any recent year, with six wins and three losses, despite colds and mumps cutting down the number of'our players in several games. We have four more games on our schedule and we feel we have a pretty good chance of winning them. Forwards this year are Captain Bettye Aulin, Juanita Barlow, Hazel Priest, Annie Lee Nettles, Shirley Jones, Georgene Parker, Ann Leinhart, and Mary Smithson. Guards are Co-captain Sadye Beth Fleming. Cornelia Weitman, Joanne Fleming, Edith Ellis, and Martha Jean Hardy. The girls to receive gold basketballs this year are Bettye Aulin and Sadye Beth Fleming. Zag '4 24465 Our prospects for another strong basketball team this season looked doubtful, since we lost five regulars from last year's outstanding quintet. Only Jim Wheaton and Cap- tain Theodore Glassmire are back to form the nucleus of the 1951 cagers. We have won eight out of ten games, and hope to win most of our six remaining scheduled games. The surprising success of our team may be contributed to good teamwork, hard practive, and team spirit or the will to win. Only Tavares and Mount Dora have been able to defeat us, and they found our team very subborn. We have beaten Pierson, Tutusville, and St. Cloud twiceg Lyman and Mount Dora once. Our starting five consists of the following: Charlie McCulley, Jim Wheaton, Don Hardy, Larry French, and Capt. Theodore Glassmire. The substitutes are as follows: Billy Meek, Donnie Kasell, Harvey Joe Slatyon, Norma Fore, Walter Duda, Richard Wyre, and Johnny Jones. Our high scorers are Jim Wheaton who has made 116 points, Charlie McCulley '71, and Don Hardy 64. BOYS PIERSON . . TAVARES . . PIERSON . . . MT. DORA . ST. CLOUD . TITUSVILLE . ST. CLOUD . Our most difficult task will be replacing Edward Duda, Bob Ward, Erwin Abell and Frankie Gore, our last year's stars. The experience gained while playing with the Oviedo Junior American Legion team should pay dividends on the diamond this spring. The success of the team will depend on developing a good catcher, a capable pitcher. two outfielders, good hitters, and fast base runners. Our pitching staff will consist of Charlie McCu1ley, Walter Duda, and Larry French. These boys will play other positions while not pitching. We hope to develop Johnny Jones into a catcher, so that Jim Wheaton may play center field to strengthen our outfield. The infield seems to be intact with Billy Meek at first base, Larry French at second base, Donnie Kasell at shortstop, and Theodore Glassmire at third base. Jim Wheaton will start in centerfield, Walter Duda in left field, and right field is wide open. Other members of the squad are as follows: Norman Fore, Richard Wyre, Ivan Iakubcin, Kenneth Malcolm, and George Domansky. These boys will have an opportunity to break into the lineup as the season progresses. Y V A Q In 1 If u p sl., f it -?4f'.--311 M. ffm 1 ' F .' ' X . . Gissie: No, but there's a McCu1ley who's willing to try. Two buzzards were lazily soaring over the desert when a jet-propelled plane zipped by them, its exhausts throwing flame and smoke. As it whizzed out of sight, one of the buzzards remarked: That bird was really in a hurry. You'd be in a hurry too, said the other, if your tail was on fire. ' ' Insurance Man: Ever had an accident?
