V SPORTS The Ovid Central School opened its victorious football season against Dundee on the Ovid gridiron. Ovid won a decisive victory over Dundee 41-0. The following week Ovid lost a heartbreaker to Interlaken in a downpour of rain and on a soggy field, 7-6. Ovid came back strong to overpower Odessa 28-12 in the following game. Next. Ovid upset the defending champions T-Burg, 16-7. The final game of the season found the downing of their old rivals, Romulus, 24-8. The season ended in a three-way tie with Ovid, Interlaken and T-Burg sharing the honors for the first place, each having lost one game. Each received a similar football trophy. The start of the 1948-49 basketball season found Ovid with five regulars: Fritts Ccenterl, O'Connell and Maher Cforwardsj, and Mannix and Ferguson Cguardsj. After battling hard all through the season. the closing found the Ovid Green Hornets and T-Burg in a deadlock for first place. This tie was played off in the Lou Gerig gym at Sampson. After waiting four years for the championship, Ovid wasn't to be denied. They downed T-Burg 42-30 and brought home the trophy. Ovid was nosed out in the sectionals by Clyde in the last few seconds of play by a score of 51-53. The scoring honors went to big C6'4 J Jack Maher with 202 points. Next came Jimmy Mannix, that hard, straight shooting guard, with 153. The J.V.s had a fairly successful season with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses in League play, 3 wins and 2 losses in non-League play. Many members of this team show to be promising material for next year's Varsity team. Scoring honors go to Donald Haring with 64 points and Jackie Guinan with 61. Climaxing the outcome of very successful basketball and football seasons, Ovid was awarded the good sportsmanship trophy. This is the lirst time that Ovid has received such an honor. This makes a total of three trophies that have been added to the show case this year.
