CLASS PROPHECY Let's draw back the Curtain of Time and look ahead into 1958. As our scene opens, we see Mrs. Marie Van Nostrand and Mrs. Rosalie Green leading Bill, Jr., and Royce, Jr., off for their first day in kindergarten. On their way they pass the new store and the proprietor, Jim Baldwin, steps out to greet them. As they are passing the time of day with him, what should they hear but the honk of a horn. They turn in time to see Mike Beardsley's milk truck speeding by with milk-maid Jane right there in the front seat. Marie and Rosalie smile as they remember the lovely double wedding that Jane and Mike and June and Neil had, June and Neil took the florist truck and went to California on a honeymoon. Upon entering the school we find Ruth Voorhees. the kindergarten teacher, ready to welcome each of her new pupils. In the background we hear a few agonizing screams as her little eherubs begin to get acquainted with each other. Out of one of the other doors steps Joanne McFadden, whose hair is already beginning to turn grey from worrying over her third grade. As they come out'of the school, Marie and Rosalie see Paul O'Connell, the prosperous young veterinarian, starting off on another case. Paul's been pretty busy lately--so many cows seem to be having calves at once. This time he is headed to the farm of Gordon Boyce and Norman Skinner who have gone into partnership and are applying the ideas learned in Mr. Whitehead's Ag. class. Marie and Rosalie stop to buy a paper at a newsstand. They are surprised to see how many of their old schoolmates are featured in the news on the front page. There is a long account of how State Trooper Jerry Reed caught a robber who had been trying to break into Lucille Poth's beauty parlor. Lucky for Lucille that Jerry happened to be having his hair set at that time. Also on the front page there is an account of how Dr. Keill, the noted psychiatrist, has at last announced a new theory. Aided by his two able secretaries, Shirley Lynch and Joyce Whitney, he has produced a book entitled Too Much Education Causes Frustration, He also has an ad for a new secretary - as one of his others, Joanne Van Nostrand, has resigned to marry Fenton Brewer. There is also the story of how two forest rangers, Donald Griffin and Douglas Wyckoff, spotted a man 20 miles away as the man dropped a lighted cigarette. The rangers' keen sight saved a whole forest from destruction. It seems that Floyd Covert, the famous painter, has made another million. His latest picture entitled, Cold Winter, shows a girl, in a strapless bathing suit, sitting on a cake of ice. The second page is a full page ad for the Embassy Theater, written by Jack Maher. He is employed as advertising manager for the Stein Clothes Co., but his real interest seems to be the Embassy. There is a notice to the women that the Home Bureau Demonstrators, Diana Caulum and Mariane Hansen, are going to meet with the Home Bureau Monday evening. The demonstration will be on frozen foods. They say the husbands are welcome. Now isn't that just like Diana and Mariane? In the want ad column there is an ad for goats. It seems that Bob Ferguson and his assistant, Elaine Vreeland, don't have quite enough for a good herd. There is another poem by Mel Quinn entitled, I Love the Women. He seems quite an authority on that subject. In the movie news we see that Joann Jackson, the second Hedy Lamarr, and Lynn Cashady, the second Van Johnson, have completed a new picture. They are getting more fan mail than Lassie, Having finished perusing the paper, the two young matrons turn the corner and wave to farmerette Marilyn Lynch who has ridden into town on her vegetable cart with produce from the Maleski farm. A little further on Evelyn Mikkelsen and Roberta Homyack wave a ham hock at them which they quickly recognize as Evelyn's and Roberta's weekly salary from their positions as clerks at Baldwin's store. At the next intersection Marie and Rosalie, complaining that a woman's work is never done, leave each other to return to their respective homes to wash the breakfast dishes. And thus ends a typical scene of the typical happenings of the Class of '49 in 1958. Once again the Curtains of Time have revealed the future. Now they remain shut, not to open again until the Class of 1950 is ready for its Curtain Time. 24
