The 1981 Overtour is dedicated to a person to whom many students through the years are truly grateful. For all her guidance, friendship, care and understanding, the 1981 Overtour is dedicated to our sponsor, Miss Carolyn Read Pickering. We feel that this is only one way to express our thanks to a special friend and a genuinely beautiful lady. We love you, Miss Pick. . ' A . X iuapSOY5 M' Yrkj 4, . EOM? lgm QQEE oo: 24: U Brown The 1980 Overton Varsity Football team was not given encour- aging pre-season ratings. Their record of 6-4 is one to be proud of in a year of rebuilding for both the coaches and players. At the beginning of the season few Bobcat players had much play- ing experience. But with each game came a better team, and the improvement of the defense for which the Bobcats are known. Rebuilding years are always tough ones for all con- cerned. Next year will be even better due to the knowledge and experience gained by this yearis team. Overton's Bobcat pride and tradition will always remain, and will return next year for an even better season. I Dede Hancock Bobby Ballinger The honor of being chosen Mr. or Miss Overton is the greatest honor given any student by his or her peers. The recipi- ents of these awards are regarded by their fellow classmates as being outstand- ing students, leaders, and friends. This year's winners, Dede Hancock and Bob- by Ballinger, are most deserving of these honors. Dede Hancock has been involved in many areas of school life from being cap- tain of the varsity football cheerleading squad to serving as treasurer of the stu- dent council. Dede has contributed in all areas of school life and has set goals and ideas for the future. She wishes that Overton could have more spirit, and hopes that more people will get involved in school activities. Dede advises us not to worry about what others say, just be our- selves. Said Dede about winning Miss Overton, I hope people feel that I've contributed to the school, it's not what the school gives you, but what you give to the school. Bobby Ballinger has also been involved in school life from being captain of the varsity football team to winning the sci- ence chair award. He has set many goals for the future and will work hard to achieve them. Bobby advises us to pay attention to the faculty and respect them-you can't get something you don't want. On becoming Mr. Overton, Bobby said, How can I be Mr. Overton when I'm the Mr. Ballinger. I really went through an identity crisis. Contemplative reaction-Oh, Lord, Iim in for more than I bargained for! This editor is not the type that will say that everything was a breeze, and that it was all a barrel of fun, and we were constantly into new and exciting things. Let's face it, putting together a 280-page book is no easy task. However, it is a great lesson in setting priorities, learning discipline, striving for creativity, and working as a group. We hope that we have captured the times you will want to remember in this book. The staff has overcome tremendous odds to put this book together, and we are proud of our final product. There are too many people to thank in this space for their work, but a few need to be mentioned. For all those times I knew I had goofed, and felt like I was totally incompetent, our sponsor, Miss Carolyn Read Pickering, was there to pick me up and let me know I was appreciated. Mr. Bill Benson and Ms. Debbie Kennedy, our local representative and plant representative for Herff-Jones, deserve all the thanks in the world for their patience and understanding of this bumbling editor-in-chief. Finally, I would like to thank my right-hand girl, julie Cantrell, for taking over and getting things done that would otherwise have been neglected. I am indebted to each of these people. In closing, I would like to say that the yearbook is not thrown together in one day, it is not a crip course, and it is not just a book to scribble autographs in. It is the final product of a group effort by your peers to capture the essence of john Overton High School. Enjoy it, reminisce in it, cherish itg it is the spirit of your high school years. gf ccdww x jay Matheney, Editor-in-chief 7 .f ,rj A 78 ff, i,g Girls, Varsity Track gi, Q? gas: ,T sdi if i if 2 -v , im. a ,.,-.,.: .
