THE PREFACE Golden days of bell, book, and pencil have been recaptured in all their glory in this our newest publication. Here are preserved the highlights of the carefree years spent at John Overton High School. Beyond the springtime of our youth summer beckons with we know not what pro- mises, but we do know that we have enjoyed every blissful moment of our high school days, We realize that all things pass, but it is our hope that in the future when the pages of this book are turned, friendly faces and happy times will be recalled. xVu,f'Lib WQEZ3 FFJ3 f j-,aj 'W X Qs XXXX l 'ii J!.Jf C xg N I T., T9 CONTENTS I The Hero T TT TT T 6 The Heroine T T 7 The Setting T T T TT 8 X l Leading Characters QI Student Council Officers TT TT TT T T 10 XA The Principals TT T TTTT TTTT T T 11 The Faculty T TTTT TTTT TTTT T T TT T12 T-,Ln 4 Metal Placque and Art Display T 16 Classes T T T TT TT 17 'J X f The Senior Class T TT T 18 I Award Winnerse T TT 37 The Top Ten T TT T38 X X The Junior Class T TT 39 Qs I The Sophomore Class T 50 X 8 4 The Freshman Class TTTT T 59 l I The Eighth Grade TT T T TT T67 The Seventh Grade T T T T T 73 5 The Intermediate Riding Team 78 Q5 Activities TT TT TT 79 r 'l outstanding characters so ' Of Studies TTTT T TTTTTT T TT 91 Lighter Moments TT TT TT TT 94 in X Operetta Babes in Toyland TT T T T 95 Junior-Senior Prom TT TT TTTT TT T96 1 From the Overton Picturebook T97 Christmas at Overton T T T T T98 Through These Pages TT T101 R n Clubs TT TT 102 X I Sports T 141 X f X XX 1 5 i 1 gx T X CN' XX T THE HERO LAMONT CARTER Bachelor of Uglinvss THE HEROINE JENNY FARNSWORTH Sll7l'l'flll'lll't nf Ovvrion 5 5 v 5 2 E 2 5 H s Q 34 51 3 Q 5 1 ? 5 Z E S mi 5 2 5 s 5 ? 5 E 5 5 3 Q Q 5 E E ?u.. at . sf I Leading Characters STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS i Seated: Bill Baggett, Boyls Vice-Presidentg Jenny Farnsworth, Secretaryg Lamont Carter, Presidentg Margaret Shaver, Girls' Vice-President. 'fHomecoming per game FOOTBAL By Bill Preston STUNNING VICTORIES AND HEARTBREAKING DEFEATS MARK '63 GRID CAMPAIGN To say that the '63 Bobcats were unpredictable would be a gross understatement. Preseasonally Coach Solon Apple's charges were picked as the odds on choice as the class AAA champions. The 1962 Blanket Bowl Champions started practice this year with jovial spirits and showed some really fine hit- ting. Always a strong squad, the adequate line was led by senior tackle Dave Elam, sophomore center Mike Hrabovsky and senior tackle Jim Atkinson. In the backfield was a stunning, array of talent with such power runners as Randy Foster, Gene Andrews and Wayne Patterson. The team looked stronger and stronger as the weeks progressed. In scrimmages they moved the ball well and won all of the preseason clashes, one by the un- holy score of 72 6. The stage was set for the season opener with Antioch's perennially title contending Bears. These two titans of the turf clashed on Sep- tember 6, in jam packed Bobcat field, and when the smoke had cleared the 'Cats were laid for dead 12 6. Stunned by the ease that Antioch had skirted the Bobcat flanks, and the inability of the 'Cats to score, many fans held a dismal view of the upcoming clash with East High's rugged Eagles. But here is where 147 EAST GAME 148 the unpredictability shows itself. With an unprecedented offensive assault paired with a tenacious defense the Red and Black thun- dered to a 61 -6 humiliation Win over the flabber- gasted Eagles. In the fourth game of the season Overton faced revitalized Hillsboro, featuring the strong running attack of All-Class AAAA halfback Doug Moulton. This game was a spectator's dream and a coach's nightmare with long scoring runs and stellar passing THE HILLSBORO GAME Upper left: 'Cat Defender P a ul Thompson Q21j, Dave Elam 1709 and Jim Atkinson C7573 grind Hillsboro Halfback Doug Moulton to a halt. After trailing at halftime the Burros took a 6 point lead late in the final period. Fighting for their first win for Big Eight competition, and with only seconds left Hal Barnes launched a long pass to Heet Bobby Tolleson, but heads-up defense by the Burro defenders kept the play from clicking, and Hillsboro emerged victorious 33 27. Even in losing, however, the Bobcats exhibited a supreme team ef- fort. The Red and Black finally got back on the vic- tory trail by bopping darkhorse Cohn 13-7. Now sporting a 2 3 overall and 2' 1 league record the 'Cats took on high flying Pulaski, and with a repetition of superior team effort and peerless coaching Overton downed the fine Pulaski squad 27' 6. With the record evened at 3 3 just past mid-season, and fighting to keep alive in the AAA title clash Overton journeyed to face fired up Goodlettsville. The favored Trojans featuring a tremendous ground attack of Dickie Genung and Frank Satty blasted the inept Overton defense to end Bobcat title hopes 26 47. Homecoming this year brought winless i i Dupont to face the 'Cats. What should have been an easy victory for Overton turned out to be a rout for Dupont. In losing 26 V0 it was the first time in 18 games the Red and Black failed to tally fthe previous instance was a 26 0 loss to Chattanooga Brainard in 19613. In facing one of their most rugged opponents the following week in Bristol, the Bobcat unpredicta- bility showed itself once more. With a furious line that opened gaping holes in the Bristol defense, power running by Randy Foster, Gene Andrews, and Wayne Patterson, along with fine passing by quarterbacks Ed Hessey, Hal Barnes, and Ray Carter, the Red and Black upset favored Bristol 28 7. This victory could not have been accomplished without the heads' up play by the Overton defensive demons led by Roy Carter, Dave Elam, Ed Konig, and Mike Parker. lt was without a doubt one of the finest games an Over- ton team has yet to play. ln the seasonal finals the Red and Black took on defending AAA Champions West High and barely edged them 7 6. Led by Captain Judy Greer and co-captain Kay Knox, the lady Bobcats have improved in every department with foul shot scoring up to 6O'Z, and field shots averaging about 40 075. The girls Went into double overtime with Ilillshoro and fought neck and neck with Dupont to the very elosefof the game. These teams are two of the best in the N.l,L. The girls have the ability and the po- tential to beat anyone they play. With continued improvement, the girls should have a fine record in their remaining games. With height and speed, the Cats had lost but one game. The Cats are the 19th District Seasonal Champions and the N. I. L. Co-Champions. The 'Cats possessed probably the best balanced squad in the league, led by Captain Jimmy Humphreys, a 5'1O Senior, and Bill Waters, a 5'11 Junior, at guards. Mike Parker, the 6'5 Senior, Co-captain, and 5'9 Senior Lee Crouch at forwards, with towering C6'6 j Junior Bill LaFevor at center. This fine attack has been bombing the nets for an average of 60 points per game while limit- ing the opposition to only 50 points. The Cat point artists have hits on 38 '75 from the fioor and a whopp- ing 72 'Z from trips to the foul line. Leading Bobcat scores is center Bill LaFevor. So Far this season the Bobcats have been brilliant in wins over tough Hill- wood 48-40, defending champs Donelson 57-54, Du- pont's rugged Bulldogs 56-55, and a pair over An- tioch 59-49, 81-69, not to mention the Polio Game's win of Howard 59-27. The 'Cat starting 5 have been ably backed up by Reserves Lamont Carter f6f1 h Senior, Calvin Kimbrough Q6'4 j Senior, Rick Lou- dermilk K6'3 b Senior, and Ray and Roy Carter, 5'1l Juniors. The Junior varsity has been boosting members to varsity play all season and have compiled a fine record. Congratulations and Good Luck to all from the Overtour Staff.
