Preparation varied from visiting the beauty shops, shopping for new clothes, buying school supplies, and completing rhe seemingly endless forms necessary for reais- tration. 1. Preparation 3 Organizations Fall into Shape Fall ‘80 was a busy time for organizations; each electing officers, initiating new members, and rais- ing funds by selling items ranging from fruit to tupperware. One especially busy club, the band, received a first division rating at the U.I.L. March- ing Contest held on November 11. 1. FHA president, Cindy Creekmur, crowns Toby White ‘King Pie Eater’’ at an assembly during homecoming week. 2. FFA mem- bers eagerly unload fruit. 3. Lori Brown, Robbi Young, Cheryl Elliott and Christy Chiles proudly show-off the U.L.L. first division trophy won by the band in Lufkin. 4. Lori Brown, a participant in a 4H exchange program, informs FHA members about Japan. 5. Leslie Pitts, Gary Clark, Shari Turner, and Robbi Young prac- tice for the Halloween play, The Grounded Witch, in Speech class. 6. Christy Chiles, Tracy McCartor, Linda Branscom, and Misty Stanger make spirit signs for the band hall celebrating a 1 ar the Kilgore contest. 7. During the last pep rally, Dhustie Hendley and Missy Gardner dress as tigers for their cheerleader initiation. 8. Felicia Rinehart, Christy Chiles, and Donna Florence work on the ad section of the annual. 9. Jr. High Cheerleaders, Jenny Feazell and Sally Stroud, make signs for the Ponies’ pep rallies. 10. The band performs the drill prepared for U.I.L. Marching Contest. 11. The band members take a break, after a month of practice, fo enjoy a swimming party. Fall Club Activities 5 Football Dominates the Season Haye you ever heard of a town named Gary? was a familiar question asked among Mustang supporters. Gary was one of the many new schools added to Overton's schedule due to the University Interscholastic League's elimination of Class B schools with the addition of Class 5A. Although some schools advanced a class, Over- ton stayed in Class A and the previous year’s Class B schools came into Overton's district. 1. Senior, Vincent Ragsdale, makes his way through the L.C. Lions for six points. 2. Tres Rouquette leads the way for Chip Graham to gain ten yards. 3. Eighth grader, Weldon Kennedy, scrambles for yar dage. 4. Steve Feazell, Bobby Windham, Ronnie Davis, and Martin Little take a break from the hort, summer practice. 5. Days when lockers rartle with “Who's Gonna Win This Game Tonighr?”’; shortened afternoon classes allow for the 3 p.m. pep rally in the gym; junior high guys load the band instrument bus; cheerleaders make an all- our, last minute, effort ro sell spirir ribbons; and the Mighty Mustangs battle ir our on 100 yards of green turf. Ir’s FRIDAY! 1. Terry Waggoner and Coach Roy watch inrentiy as the play is carried out. 2. Nickie Young, DeAnne Bounds, Carole Eaves, and Kelly Jackson ‘blow their horns’ for the Mustangs 3. A glimpse of the real action. 4. Unifying their forces, the fwirlers and cheerleaders build a pyramid at the last pep rally 5. Third graders, Bri an Jackson and Lowell Randel enjoy the pep rally. 6. Seniors: Leanne Austin, Margaret Montgomery, and Rexann Grandstaff cherish their last foorball game as OHS cheerleaders. 9. Seniors lead the student body in Hail Alma Mater’ ar their lasr pep rally as students of OHS. 10. Sponsor Mary Bruce, Cindy Creekmur, and Penny Johnson's efforts paid off with a nice profit for the senior class. 14. The Mustangs prepare for the second half. 12. Debbie Findley waves the Spirit stick won by the band. 13. Because of rain, the band marches in their jeans and band T-shirts. 14. Somberly, Tim White and Doug Maynard watch the pep raily Homecoming Week ignites Spirit Homecoming week, October 6-10, was crammed full of exciting events. The activities were announced on Monday during an assembly called by the Student Council. The week's sched- ule was: Tuesday - Sock Day, Wednesday - Crazy Hat Day, Thursday - Fifties Day, and Friday - Green and White Day. Other highlights included a pie eating contest held at the Thursday afternoon assembly in the gym, a Friday morning pep rally, and culminated downtown for the traditional Fri- day afternoon pep rally. 1. Periann Allen and Dena Graham receive a helping hand from Alan Gieb at the downtown pep rally. 2. Students beam on Hart Day, since school has been dismissed at noon due fo all water being cut-off. 3. Congratulations are in order for Mary Sanders and Joey Johnson, vored Best Dressed on Fifties Day. 4. Repre- sentative of many feet on Sock Day are those of Leslie Pitts and Becky Mallette. 5. Seniors: Greg Lovett, Jeff Grammier, Rich- ard Wilson, and Gary Clark cheer pie eater, Toby White, to victory by chanting ‘Eat, Toby, Ear!’’. 6. Coach Maynard seeks the support of the fans for the homecoming game. 7. Mary Rice Rouquette, Amy Stribble, and David Riddle anxiously await the start of practice for Friday evening's ceremony. 8. Bringing the fifties back to life are these eighth grade girls. 9. Elementary students prefer downtown pep rally to afternoon academics. 40. Seniors, Gretta Carter and Rexann Grandstaff spread spirit chains which reveal thar the seniors have won! 14. Mr. Beene and his musicians set the tempo for pep rally. 12. Anxiety is obvious among foorball players at the homecoming pep rally. Homecoming Week Evening’s Spotlight on Leanne Parents gather on the sideline with their cameras. Billie Jackson checks to make sure each member of the court is in place. Christy Chiles prepares her notes in the press box. The band, now on the field, begins to play ‘Daybreak’. Ir is now 7 p.m. on October 10 and the pregame Homecoming ceremony has begun. The queen nominees are announced after the duchesses and dukes have taken their places. They are: Periann Allen, Leanne Austin, Susan Cox, and Donanne Skeen. The votes have been counted and “The 1980.84 Homecoming Queen is Miss Leanne Austin.” 1. Jeff Grammier isisses Queen Leanne Austin, as Shawn Gaddis, Patti Stephens, and Cindy Wright patiently woir. 2. Recently crowned queen, Leanne Austin enjoys the half-time show with Jeff Grammier. 3. Eighth and seventh grade duchesses, Angie Kilgore and Tina Hankins, anxious: ly wait for the pre-game ceremony to begin. 4. Joey Johnson-and Paul Brown battle for yards. 5. Missy Gardner, Vicki Graham, Rexann Grandstaff, and Margaret Montgomery are spell-oound by rhe activiry on the field. 6. Duchess Cindy Furqueron assists her cousin, Donanne Skeen,. as she prepares for the Homecoming Queen Coronation. 7. Felicia Rinehart, Teresa Uftsey, Christy Chiles, Sonja Smith, Robbi Young, Cheryl Ellioft, Martha and Tracy McCartor smile as they finish their hat routine to the theme song of Dallas’. 8. Sixth graders: Lisa Webb, Melynda Wright, Leann Jackson, and Laura Bell arrive early ro insure a good sear. 9. Student Council Secrerary, Christy Chiles, has the honor of announcing the 1980 Homecoming Queen and court. 10. The elementary courl members are: Shawn Gaddis and Patti Stephens, Kindergarten; John Glover and Amy Duncan. ‘st; David Croteau and Angela Cagle, 2nd; Scott Davis and Mary Rice Rouquette, ord; David Riddle and Amy Stribble, 4th. Dean Sims and Holly Welch, 5th; and Randy Stanley and Carla Stephens, 6th. 11. Robbi Young pins Chery! Elliot's mum back on after the rwirlers’ performance. 12. Glendale Whitten, Tommy Hoofen, and Lou Hankins watch as the Hornecoming court is announced. Glendale Hankins Whitten, 1954 graduate, and Lou Han- kins are especially proud of Lou's three daughrers thar are participating. Tommy Hooten quarterbacked the 1963 Mustangs, his senior year Homecoming Evening 15 Holiday Season Busily Spent Twinkling lights, parties, and hopes of Santa alll characterize Christmas. Overton students were caught up: in the- Christmas spirit as well. We attended parties, decorated doors, planned for Santa’s arrival, and participated in Overton's Christmas parade. 1. Robbi Young performs a reading selection at the Garden Club's Christmas Program. 2. Sixth graders: Phillip Cox, Stephen Rhodes, and Jim Pitts judge the High School Door Decorating Contest. 3. Margaret Montgomery, Mrs. Gardner, Rexann Grandstaff, Becky Mallette, Shari Turner, Donanne Skeen, Kim Furqueron, and Leslie Pitts seem to have caughr the holiday spirit. 4. David Spencer helps Mrs. Bunch and Mrs. Daniels pass our the presents. 5. Delisa Wright, Christina Van- over, Chris Merritt enjoy their party. 6. Kristy Stallings proudly shows the prize she won by “pinning the nose on Santa. 7. Junior high cheerleaders wave to the townspeople. 8. Charlie and Geno Brager “eye” the others present. 9. RY —— a SL Christmas Activities 17 Bands Sweepstakes is Grand Finale During the winter months, Overton students kept very busy with a large selection of activities. The band was especially busy preparing for their con- test on March 11, where they brought home the covered Sweepstakes trophy. Bur there were also other activities like the Soeech Club Christmas Party, the Library Club’s Val-o-gram sale and the band’s Chicken and Dressing Dinner. These activi- ties helped pass the cold winter months!! 1. The cake says it all: OHS BAND S WEEPSTAKES WINNER! 2. Gary Clark and Robbi Young find gag gifts amusing at the Speech Club Christmas Party. 3. Proud band members gather around the cake thar represents their hours of hard work and dedication. 4. Melin- da Gipson’s artistic ability is displayed on the bulletin board she decorated for the Library Club's Valentine Sale. 5. Billy Spencer and Grover Trammel clean-up after the Band's Chicken Dress- ing Dinner. 6. Sonja Smith and Felicia Rinehart count the money made from the dinner. 7. Mrs. Roberson’s black board is a remind- er fo all Seniors of their fund-raising activities. 8. They are, of course, members of the basketball reams! Jr. High and High School students alike are very involved in this sport. The students participating in this sport gave their very best at every game and two members of the girls Varsity team won the honor of being named on the All-District Team. Who were “they?” The parents of Overton students, of course. Our parents were everywhere, giving their support, advice, and guidance while we as students strived to be the best possible. From registration to Commence- ment, parents were instrumental to Overton's school activities. 4.
