SUPERINTENDENT Dear Students and Teachers: The supreme test for our Hway of Lifen is at hand, Our nation is in a conflict in which you and I must take our respective parts. Sacrifices must be made, even Life must be given. The total cost in human resources may never be known. You and I will share in that responsibility whatever it may be. Our type of Home, Church, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness is worth the cost however great. The same kind of spirit that came to you and me in our heritage must be exemplified, if these ideals are to be maintained. May God's blessings be with each of you always. in Sincerely, BLANCHE COHAGEN ' X 4-'nj Secretary PRINCIPAL To the Students: The present world conflict should cause us to give serious thought to our democratic ideals and institutions. Your student activities, of which this yearbook is a definite part, are agencies of group participation and self expression. These activities constitute present life situations and preparation for life in a democracy. Our country is fighting to preserve these institutions and we know that the students of the Overton Schools will do their part toward the perpetuation of the dem- ocratic way of life. OVERTON 0 HENDERSON 0 The Overton Mustangs began the season against the Henderson Lions to keep up the tradition that, even though Henderson may beat Overton in anything else, if you put eleven Overton boys against eleven Hen- derson boys, Overton will re- main supreme. The tradition of winning every season opener since there has been an Overton Foot- ball team was also broken. Both teams worked hard, but neither crossed the other's goal line. Even though both teams had several chances to score, neither was able to out charge the other's line, Four lettermen, Jack Huffman, Bill Wood, Bailey Jarvis, and Ernie Baker began the game. The rest of the team was made up of newcomer's and Squad- men, which were Keith Lewis, Estel Laughlin, Darrell Wil- son, Jere Jean Lewis, James Ward, 0. A. In the first quarter the Mustangs blocked a punt and Bailey Jarvis carried the ball across on second down for the score. Early in the final period Laugh- lin, left guard, crashed through to block one of Thompson's punts on the Troup 40 yard line and carried the ball for another touchdown. However, the suc- cess of a season is not tabu- lated points scored or games won. The basketball team was very inexperienced and consist- ed of many newcomers new to this sport. The shortness of the play ers handicapped them s' 1DCe nearly all the t ' ' eams in this district have tall players. In spite of all shortcomings, Mr. Tyner did a grand job of coaching an in- experienced squad. There were only two seniors who played basketball and saw quiet a bit of service. They were Darrell Wilson and Bobby Robinson. Host of the team JERE JEAN LEWIS Center LJ JACK JOHNSTON Guard BASKETBALL-CCont'd from page 859 was made up of Juniors and a very dependable freshman, Estel Laughlin. The Juniors were Jack Johnston, Jere Jean Lewis, Bailey Jarvis, Jack Berry, Ernie Baker, Otto lullins, Joe Coop, and Eugene Alford. There were many other squad members who aided the team in many ways. The season was cut short by the war when the district decided to abandon interschol- astic sports to comply with the war efforts and the tire ration- ing. This did not, however, end basketball in the school, since, through the efforts of Mr. Tyner, Coach Allen, and lr. Fields, and intramural basketball tournaments were carried on. No letters were awarded, but all of those participating received a bene- fit from playing basketball. BOBBY ROBINSON Forward 1, !!!L R59 .W-RVETOVW?
