' The Star-Spangled Banner FRANCIS SCOTT KEY JOHN STAFFORD SMITH Oh say! can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous f O'er the ram-parts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. Chorus Oh, say, does that Star-spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, Wh at is that which the breeze, o'er the towering stee As it fitfully blow, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines on the streamg P1 Chorus 'Tis the Star-spangled Banner, oh, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh, thus be it ever when free-men shall stand Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: Hln God is our trust!N Chorus And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave Q'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! i- GUR NATIONAL ANTI1 'rx X X 8 F or , J X W f X Y A I l ii!!ii 5 ..AV I x n A f wk ,. Half Back Co-Captain 152 lbs. Senior 3 THE SEASON Whether or not this season was a success is dependent upon what we mean by the word success. In the eyes of some people success is measured in vic- tories, according to this we were neither a success nor a failure, of our nine games we won seven and lost only twog winning second place in our district f race. Then there are those who would measure the success of a football team c , by the good that the team and fans have received from it, as well as its accom- plishments according to the material it had from which to develop a team. Ac- cording to the terms our year can be termed as one of success because the goal for which Coach Allen reaches is the development of the character of his boys, then win if possible. We started the season as a team which the fans expected little more than hard fought defeats but which turned in a record worthy of the name NMustangsn which TOMMY DAVIS past teams have held so high. Manager 1 I .',,-Q 14 K Overton 12 Henderson 6 With the newly formed tradition of upsetting predictions and defeat- ing a touted Class AA team, and the long standing record of winning every season opener since there has been an Overton football team at stake, the Mustangs fought their way to a victory over the Lions by a small margin of 12- 6. The whole eleven stood out as a hard fighting and smooth working combination. Windham and Jacobs, who had never played in a regulation game before o showed that they could be de- ' X pended upon to hold down f I wxgxx their positions while two , N 1 ag.-.of last years juniors, ' Baker and Jarvis, turned in , 1 a great job. In trying to 2 I es , ,QQ7 pick the outstanding player ' 1 we have a tough Job but we - remember that Captain No- dine was always just where he was needed most and I ,?' did a great job at it calling plays, and there J JOHN KEELING was the boy that most of the ' A11 District 2 fans as well as his teammates Tlckle had some doubt about lmtil he Co'C Pt 1n proved himself to be 169 lbs' Sen10r 1 fi 1 f iv p ,i ! For the op- ponents McCarter and King, quarter- back and end respectively were the outstanding. Our two touchdowns were made by Wilson and Jarvis and Hender- son's was made by McCarter. Overton 32 Troup 0 In their first home game of the ' season the Mustangs romped to a 32-0 X victory over the Troup tigers. The boys still worked together smoothly and fought hard but because of the weakness of their opponents didn't get much of a chance to show it. After the first eleven had run up a com- tt Qf fortable margin the second and third X 3? string took over and played the major- l QQ ity of the game. Thus we got a chance 5 to see our future team strut their stufggil' I A and we must admit it was quite pleasing. The third string which is composed mostly of extremely small boys, copped the whole show of the night by holding WILBUR JACOBS the.Tigers scoreless the entire last 160 lbs, quarter and at the same time making Fullback some nice gains themselves. Outstand- Senior ing for Troup was Reagin who deserves much praise for his spirit and fight. The touchdowns were made by Nodine and Baker who made two apiece and Maynard of the second team who made one. 1 -A i J. S. LAMB 138 lbs. Guard . It look-. ed bad for our boys in the first few minutes of play for the Salem lads were romping toward pay dirt in a speedy manner, but after the first few plays the game was well in hand. The Mustangs, working as hard and smooth as ever, made three well-earned touchdowns. All three were made by Nodine behind excellent blocking. Outstanding along with Nodine was Middlebrook at end who made several hard pass snatches and was a fifth man in the Eagle backfield. Hughes, in the Salem backfield, was a constant threat throughout the game and Tyner at tackle stopped many of our running DARREL attempts. The victory was costly for WILSON the home team because Co-Captain Laugh- 123 lbs. lin suffered a side injury in the first Left Half- half and played none in the final back period. Jacobs and Jarvis were the X big men of the offense and b hard 4d A gk ping they set up three touchdowns f fqggame. Nodine's vicious power scored all the touchdowns. On defense, our line was still the stone wall that it used to be, making Arp lose more yardage than - they gained on the ground. Two Mustang fumbles in the first three plays of the game, gave the X Tigers the ball on our one yard line and they ' drove over for a touchdown on the third play. End OVERTON 13 GASTON 31 Realizing that we still had a chance and that it all depended upon this game the Mustangs were in the right spirit for the task, but some how we got off on the wrong stride and it is impossible to correct ourselves enough in one game to defeat as great a team as the Red Devels are this year. The game went pretty well in the first quarter and most of the third but the Gaston lads final- ly got the upper hand and for the rest of the game it was all a Gaston show. OVERTON 20 LONDON 6 Our chances for the District Championship are gone, but our chance to save a record of never being below second place was still to be protected so the , Mustangs fought the Wildcats to a 20-6 victory. The Wildcats are next to the lowest team in the district and the game should have been pretty much one sided but they held our boys to a tough game and managed to give us a few scares One of the Mustangs seemed to want nothing more.than leave a great football name for him- SIDNEY self in the last game and he succeeded in do- WILSON ing that. This boy was 142 lbs. ROY TYNER Basketball Coach DON BENNETT Manager THE SEASON After a first glance at the sea- l son record of this years Basket- ball team one would think that it was not so successful. Then , p JK N when we consider a few reasons, X we see it through a different 5 X '.A y' light. With the size and ex- Q perience our boys had this year X they turned in a record that is much better than was looked for. L 5 M. H. Fuller, Jack Berry, Jack , Johnston, Darrell Wilson, and , H Earnest Baker were all small as ' ' well as inexperienced but much was depended upon them. To sup- port these we had three experi- enced and larger boys, Charles Holman, Wayne Middlebrook, and Everett Florey. Wayne, Everett, and Charles turned in a wonder- ful season and it is hard to pick the most outstanding one WaYDe Midd1ebF00k between them, but Wayne probably Guard had a slight edge. Everett Florey The team won one tournament and took third place in the county meet. In all our games the team built up an average of .500 and piled up a total of 395 points to the opponents 422. Of these points Charles accounted for 111 making him high point man. Wayne averaged a little over seven points per game to give him the highest average. A majority of our lettermen this year will be back for the coming season. Jack Berry, Gor- don Bartels, Otto Mullins, Bobby Robinson, Bill Holman, and Ken- neth Jones together with the n f four returning lettermen will be the nucleus of next year's team Spring practice should help out in making next year's team a better one H5 M' H' Fuller Charles Holman I , SEASONS RESULTS -.
