e old and th new Rugby X Gymnastics Football without helmets, shoulder pads, and leg pads? Call it rugby, add C30 adventur- ous students, and a sport is born. The team's enthusiasm was understandable since this was the first year Overland had a rugby team. ln fact, rugby was not recognized by the school as an official sport, and players could not earn a letter. But this didn't discourage the players who turned out for the team. Rugby players practiced twice a weels, Mondays and Thursdays, and had games ev- ery Wednesday, The players enjoyed this light schedule. Sr. Chris Coldren said, This makes it easier to worls life around rugby. The team had two coaches, industrial arts teacher Mr. Burt Dalton, and Mr. Paul Hoskins. who was involved in the orga- nization of the game schedule. Although there were no pro- tective pads worn in rugby as in other contact sports, Sr. Pat Parker said, There is a lot of contact, but because of rugby's style the lacls of pads doesn't increase the danger. Most injur- ies are from a player's own carelessness. Unlilse the rugby team which was in its first season, Over- land's boys' gymnastics team was well established and suc- cessful. They were not only the defending state champions but were also selected by the Na- tional High School Gymnastics Association as the All-American team, The team was loolsing for- ward to another great season. Coach Gary Alexander said that this year's team was as tal- ented as last year's. But he also said, lt's hard to replace a state champion. However, the fact that there were three returning All-American gymnasts to the team was encouraging. One unique quality of boys' gymnastics was the unusually long season. lt was seven months long and they compete ed in 12 meets during that time. This put an incredible amount of pressure on the team meme bers. Jr. Ryan Hume said, There is a lot of stress involved when you're worrying about meets. Gymnastics was unlilse other sports in the way that it was more individualized. Jr. David Podrasky said, lt's different. You're not going against one other person, you're out there yourself. 66 l feel the gymnastics team is excellent. I was pleasantly surprised that they were so good at the high school level.
