The Overland boys finally earned the right to hear the cheers from rhe crowds. The boys' baslserball ream proved themselves worthy op- ponents in the Centennial league. Although they did not win the championship, rhey won more games rhan in any other year in the school's histo- ry, They missed the playoffs by only one game when they dropped the season ending fi- nale againsr Heritage 70-oO, The reason for the turnar- ound began wirh rhe coaches, enr and dedication and a lirrle exrra help from the fans. ln his second year at Over- land, Coach Arlandus Lowe recruited, cajoled, and encour- aged students TO rurn our for the team. Last year l was a new coach, l only had to cur rwo players due ro lacls of infer- esr. This year l had ro cur about 20 students because the pra- gram is building a reputation. Consisrenr play by the play- ers was also a lsey reason for their success. And because of that consisrency, players re- ceived respecrffrom the fans, their coaches, and each other ger reams. get down we don'r quit, be- cause we lsnow we can come bacls and win. Added Sr. Joe Funk, l'We have a much berrer lsnowledge of the offense, we have an idea of what we're rrying ro accomplish. One of the reasons they were able ro accomplish more was because of the transfer of Sr. Brian Jarvis to Overland. l-lis o'5 lf? height gave the ream much needed help on the in- side game, Brian said, The move from my old school ro Overland has been a great ex- perience. Our desire ro win helped us ro play with rhe big- Another help came from the fans. Srudenfs smuggled in cow- bells, plastic horns, and lsazoos ro add their support ro the play- ers on the court. Sr. Erica Ouel- lette said, l'Nor roo many schools have fans that bring cowbells to supporr their reams. By finishing their season at 8- 10, the team had reached goals they had only dreamed of achieving ar the beginning of rhe season. Lowe said, The season has been better than in the whole history of Overland. l feel this year is a turning point and now ir is all uphill.
