58 Lady Blazers GYMNASTICS The girls' gymnastics team, niclsnamed 'lthe Lady Blazers, twirled, tumbled, and vaulted rheir way to success. They also blazed a trail to second in the district championships, despite major losses of valuable team members. Many gymnasts were disqualified from competi- tion due to last year's Colorado High School Athletic Association CCl-ISAAD ruling stating that no student athlete may practice outside of the regular season with a team coach. lf the ath- lete or coach chose to do so, he or she would be excluded from participation in school-spon- sored athletic events that year. Team members who were lost in the walse of this decision were Sr. Terri Wyatt, Sr. Laura Barrett, Sr. Mary Beth Wise- man, Negar Ayromloo-ze- deh, U5 Gymnastics Federation member Julie Dunhll, and Coach Lindy Alexander. Jr. Sharon Hutchison said, We could have done even better without the ruling. Adapting to new coaches hin- dered an excellent perfor- mance on our part. But we did very well considering the cir- cumstances. This year's team was largely freshmen and new coaches, Jr. Stacey Todd said, Even after losing some of our best girls, we had a very strong comebacls, Everybody on the team improved much as indi- viduals, and the team was bet- ter as a whole. Although we miss our disqualified exteam- mates, some may join us next year, and we will lools forward to that. Coach Chris Brakeen said, lf we had all of the girls dis- qualified from the ruling on the team, we would have talsen state. Before the season start- ed, they had no coach. Nobody wanted to talse Mrs. Alex- ander's place. When l tools over as head coach, the team had to put aside Mrs. Alex- ander's methods and do things my way. ln spite of what seemed to be large obstacles in their way, Brakeen and Assistant Coach Iris Skadden led the Lady Blaz- ers through a very successful season. Soph. Anna Lisa Can- tor and Jr. Stacey Todd com- peted in state finals. Jr. Stacey Todd tools the All-American ti- tle. The team, as a whole, won nine meets and tool-1 third in the Centennial League. Sr Tania O'Hare displays a move unique ro heron the team. Tania is the only mem- ber of rhe 1984 varsity team rhat competed this year Sports News of the ruling was very discouraging to me.
