All of these elements X K compose Teacher Burnout , a condition X which affected all teachers at one time or anf sit sf Z CJ Z I-Ieipf' UI can't stand it anymore. These were auotes often heard from students, but who heard the teachers? Not many: however, teachers were just as susceptible to the pres sures of school as the students. They were also just as likely to succumb to the insecurity and frustration. Among the many tasks they perf formed were creating daily lessons, grading stacks of assignments and tests and dealing with rowdy students. During the passing periods, there was ao more humble sight than a teacher battling his or her way through the hordes of students in the halls. This was further complicat- ed if the teacher was transporting cumbersome other. Mathematics teacher Rod McKinney said, I get the most upset with myself generally when I am not well enough prepared that day to reach the lessons. I can get very frustrated when I am not getting my point across or when students are not paying attention, However, I have my greatest patience when I am in class and communicating with the students, Some teachers found their career was taking away from their private lives, English teacher Sheryl Foster said, 'II spend at least 25 hours every weekjust correcting students' work while I am at home, This takes away from the time that I want to spend with my husband and daughter. Being responsible for someone's edu- cation is a very big responsibility and it produces a lot of stress. At our school it is especially stressful because we live in o very success oriented com- munity. Social Studies teacher Ed Ellis said, I have the hardest time when I come to class very excited about the lesson and the class doesn'r show any interest. It gets to be very hard to work when you haven't had a break in a long time. The beaurocracy can be a major obstacle to getting things done. --nn.. i I' S ai cf tmyfiwi. Pass, fail, tests, quizzes, tardies, absenses, excuses, excuses, and more excuses When does it end? German teacher Becky Freeman ponders this thought in her office Teacher burnout has taken its toll on math teacher Rod McKinney.
