202 Freshmen eb by 690 Qu Ss QQ? Q92 qqo Quietly he slips the lseys out of his mom's purse. Catlilse he steals across the family room to the garage and to his goal-the car. The street is clear of police cars. ln a moment the sound of squealing tires and the smell of burning rubber are all that ore left as this freshman begins the thrill and adventure of driving with- out his license, In a typical freshman class, 7O'Zi of the stu- dents admitted to illegally driving, Note: Be- cause parents as well as students read the year- bools, some freshman names have been with- held, The precautions listed above weren't entirely untrue. One freshmen Hdrove in the ditch along a dirt toad so I wouldn't hit any cats, when she borrowed her parents' car. Policemen played an important role in the routes and time spent driving by nonelicensed drivers. Fr. Jeff Bain had to cut his outing short when a police car drove past him and stopped ahead of him. Many freshmen had close calls with their par- ents. One was driving his mom's cor while she was on a date, When he slowed to o stop at a stoplight, he realized his mom and her date were right next to him, Not all parents, though, were against their lsids driving, Gne freshman's parents thought that his driving was great because they didn't have to tal-ae him places. Another freshman's mother admitted that she also drove illegally. Her only advice was to have fun, butjust don't get caught.
