n a democracy, its important to understand what is going on in our government because We have the responsibility to make sure it runs smooth- ly, and to do that you need to he aware. Laura Protextor Doing Their Part Some students cringed at the thought of doing something helpful, while others were eager to lend a helping hand. Students in the National Honor Society and in the Political Avvareness Club helped others out often. The Political Awareness Club vvas started in the 1984-85 school year by sponsor Mt. Bill Bliss and lsathy Mostovv C851 There vvas a glaring need for political information and avvareness in this school. Kathy Mostovv and I had the same ideas, stated Mr. Bliss. The Political Awareness Club put on sever- al events. A rice banquet vvas held to in- crease awareness of world hunger. At first, club also sponsored discussion groups on to- pics ranging from nuclear weapons to Libya. As Jr. Shaun Ryan said, lt's enjoyable be- cause you bring up suqects that people don't usually thinls about. Students in the NHS had at least a So GPA. and were involved in community ser- vice. NHS is honoring students for their ac- complishments, said sponsor Mrs. Dee Bond. Members of NHS got involved in many service projects. They helped the Retarded Citizens Association by giftvvrapping at Christ- mas, and were involved in tutoring and in a a lot of students are reluctant to go to the functions, but once they are there, they seem more interested, said Mr. Bliss.
