oing the distance TRACK Pump those arms! Lean fore ward! On your toes! These were familiar commands heard by anyone within earshot of the track, as Coaches Woodie Smith and Jim Bond encourf aged their runners to improve, Coaching gives me a chance to see students out of class, and for them to see me, said Coach Bond. Although coaching takes a lot of time and energy, their dedication wins the respect of the athletes. The coaches make us work hard and make us perform to the best of our abilities, said Sr. Rhonda Hor- ton. They work us really hard, but they are very knowledge- able and fun after practice is over, said Soph. Tony Oakes. Coach Smith has coached girls' track since Overland opened and has coached the team to three consecutive dis- trict championships along with many other titles. The state championship is the only thing we haven't won, he said. Though the boys don't have quite as impressive a list of victo- ries, Bond is still pleased with the team and where they are go- ing. Our goal is to improve ev- ery time we go out onto the track, and we do. Last year at districts every member of the team scored a personal record. That is the most important as pect of any athletic event, added Bond. Every Saturday during the season was spent at the meets. Theres a lot of pressure and anxiety while you wait around for your event, said Tony. Meets are fun because you get to show your stuff, said Soph. Krisa Hallock. To avoid the monotony of practice and meets, the teams tried to put a little variety in what they did. On Thursdays we run to a park or some- where off the track to prace tice, said Smith. We alleviate pressure by putting variety in the workouts. said Bond. Run- ning at different parks in the city brought the girls' team togeth- er. Mentioned Krisa, We also go to the zoo one day each season and go out to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. Unity between the coaches and athletes and their attitudes contributed to successful sea- sons for both teams. Rhonda concluded, Being part of track is realizing that notjust one per- son makes up the team, but everyone involved does. 66 Track is demanding, yet it is quality time spent by the athletes. lt always makes for an exciting sea- SOO. Lric Ixyooerg et physical ln a scrimmage against Creek, Sr. Chuck Koskovich attempts to pass rhe ball to Jr. Mason Hayutin. Scrimmages were held to give the reams practice for real games, As he eludes his opponent, Soph. Gary Wheeler catches the ball. Gary was one of the few sophomores on the varsity ream. Eric Rydberg LACROSSE lt's warl Because lacrosse games were often physical and competitive, many players dee scribed them in this manner. As Sr. Derek Weingart said, Bef ing intense on the field is very important, as intimidation leads to winning the game. When the spring season opened, approximately 90 stuf dents tried out for the lacrosse team, Coach Matt Beatty ace counted for this large turn out, stating, l'Lacrosse is a physical spring sport that has continuous action, It combines soccer and hockey as well as several other sports. Jr. Steve Bowman added, l'Lacrosse is a team sport, and everyone has a chance to handle the ball. Practice was imperative to the team's success. The prac- tices, including Saturday scrime mages, usually lasted for two and a half hours and consisted of conditioning, strategy skills, stick skills, and group skills. As a result, Jr. Drew Kitchell stated, We get in great shape! As the season opened, the team had an optimistic outlook. Sr. Todd Hess said, ln past years it has been more individe ual, but this year we hope to have unity within the team. Adding to the optimism, two new coaches were hired. Matt Beatty and Mike Romanski coached the freshmenfsopho- more and the JV teams, while Ron Castagna remained the head coach ofthe varsity team. Returning lettermen included Srs. Chuck Koskovich, Todd Hess, Jeff Cannon, and Jrs. Steve Bowman, Dave Reeb, and Monte Montgomery. The captains were Chuck, Derek, and Jr. Steve Devanney. While many players ex- pressed the desire to go to stare, Coach Castagna held a more conservative goal. He stated, l want to be able to hold our own in any game whether we win, lose, or draw. l'm taking this season one game at a time instead of look- ing ahead to 'key' games, Besides being popular with the players, lacrosse was also enjoyed by the spectators. Jr. Steve Guthery said, Lacrosse is a fast-moving game with plenty of aggressiveness and goal-scoring. 66 next.
