Striving to portray in pictures and thoughts, phases of Regional life and memories of these four years so quickly passed, the L'Agenda staff of 1960 presents Hin Days of Old, our years at Overbrook. We now find ourselves amidst the bustle and tumultuous stir of an ever-changing world. We can testify to these changes for we have seen them ourselves. As we approach adulthood, we assume an increasing number of responsibilities which we must not shirk, for herein is the challenge that confronts each of us. Ideals have been instilled within us that we must carry with alacrity, for it is our task to go forth and meet the challenges of the future. Rudyard Kipling best expressed this feeling in his immortal poem, If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too 5 If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don,t deal in lies, Or being hated, donit give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your Master , If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same 3 If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools, If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: Hold on!', If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything thatis in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son. He is liked for his humor and his forthrightness. He is respected for his sound judgment and integrity. He had climbed in just a few years from a social studies teacher to the high position of Assistant Principal. For the past four years he helped solve the many problems that have confronted us. He scolded us when we needed it, but he praised us when we deserved it. It is with pride and gratitude that we dedicate this yearbook to an individual who so rightly deserves it: Mr. Maiese, our Principal. 7 SPECIAL RECOGNITION We would like to express our sincere appreciation to you for the personal interest shown to our class beyond your duties as teachers. We thank you, Miss Rothermel, for helping us with all our prob- lems concerning refreshments for our dances. We also thank you, Mr. McElhenny, for the time and energy you have put forth to help our class be the proudest to be gradu- ated from Overbrook. We thank you, Mr. Karnes, for your supervision of the informal photography appearing in our L'Agenda. Most of all, we want to thank you, Mrs. Goginsky, for your tire- less energy that has made the L'Agenda possible. Thank you for sharing our longings, our hopes, and our dreams, for it was only through you we were able to achieve these goals. 8 FRANK L. DONAHUE Superintendent To the members of the Class of 1960: For four years you have been working and striv- ing toward the goal of acquiring a high school education. When that goal is achieved in June of 1960 and you leave Overbrook to either enter into a chosen field of work or to pursue further your education program, you have before you, in a dif- ferent sort of way, as many opportunities as the graduates of years ago. To a degree there are new worlds to conquer as we contemplate the future exploration of space. There are new areas of our own world in the Ar- tic and Antartica to develop and explore. Perhaps more than any of these is the opportunity to help in the development of the most important factor today if civilization is to survive -M that of de- veloping better human relations with all peoples. Just as you have learned through your high school years to work together with other people of different races, creeds, and beliefs, it is our hope that you, with the thousands of other graduates of the other high schools in the country, may util- ize this ability in helping to develop a world in which all people can live, work and play together with proper tolerance and understanding of the individualities of other people. Only by achieving that goal can we be certain that civilization as you have known it can continue to exist. It is our hope that you young people will be able to take the initiative in helping to attain the goal of a peaceful and useful existence in the complex world of today. Fisher, Gwen Williams, President I would like to thank the members of the Student Council for electing me president of our organization. Since I came into oflice during the school year, it was rather diilicult to assume the respon- sibilities of the Student Council as the governing body of the school. The Student Council of any school is an im- portant working body. Here at Overbrook this council is not only the students, government, but also the school's backbone. The members of this organization are constantly working on various committees for dances, banquets, projects, and campaigns. We here at Regional hold our Student Council in high respect, as it justly deserves. We expect this energetic group will continue to strive to uphold our school's fine reputation, and we all hope that the student body will continue to give this organization its whole-hearted support in all its endeavors. Without the co-operation of the faculty and stu- dents it would have been impossible to realize our accomplishments. FIRST ROW - M. Kenney, P. Bythway, A. Muller, L. Carter, K. This hard-working, ag- gressive group of people endeavor to unfold a year- book of pictorial and literary remembrance of the activities and happenings during their four years at Overbrook Regional High School. This year's L'Agenda emphasized the theme of Early English history. Uln Days of Oldu is the key- note throughout the issue. The close cooperation be- tween the students and their eminent ability in art, English, and their knowledge of business procedure, makes possible this finished product. FIRST ROW - E. Veach, G. Landes. 1 2 s On Saturday night, May 23, 1959, the Class of 1960 presented their Junior-Senior Prom. It was a beautiful spring evening and the atmosphere was not lost upon entering the gym. On the contrary, the lovely season was reflected by our Springtime,' theme. Before the couples passed through the flower- strewn trellis, each girl received a sparkling charm to remember the occasion. The couples danced happily around the quaint wishing well to the divine music of Bill Muller and his orchestra. The big event of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen. Our gracious queen, Rosane Arsenault, and our charming king, John Ciancio, then led the Grand March around the gym decorated with scenic murals and flowing streamers. The queen's attendants were Bernice Potts, Karen Holmes, and Gwen Williams. In the king's court were Tony Maccarella, Joe Mulhearn, and Joe Moos. Each of the lovely ladies of the court received a beautiful bouquet to befit her position. As the hours slipped by, the music and the evening drew to a close, and each of the charming couples left the gym with a memory they will cherish always. 'Q' iv it 29 ART CLUB FIRST ROW - J. Can you remember, oh so long ago, when we were freshmen? How frightened we were those first days! Our favorite ex- pression was, Do you know where . . . is? Due to one of the new rules, we had the dubious privilege of being the last class to get initiated so we couldn't revenge ourselves. That year at Lower Camden County Regional High School we met the upperclassmen going to lunch as we were just beginning our school day. Then in February came our big event, Tony Sindoni and Diane Monte- murro were picked king and queen of the 'cLove Knot, our Valentine Dance. The next year was quite different. Do you recall the drastic changes that had taken place by the time we returned in September? We not only had a new addition to our building, but a new name as well - Overbrook Regional High School. After sitting around for such a long summer, we were glad to greet them on the much loved full session. Then came December! The school was bubbling with the exciting topic of conversation . . . The Sophomore Cotillion, entitled Stardust.H It took us three months to recover from the excitement of the Cotillion. By that time we were ready for another big event, the St. Patrick's Day Dance. During this year, one of our well-liked classmates, Kathy Maiuro, was taken from us suddenly on March 1. The loss of Kathy was felt deeply by everyone. With all of the memories and fulfillment of our sophomore year, we looked forward with anticipation to our following years at Overbrook. Then we were juniors! What a thrill it was knowing we had reached the half-way mark. How sad it was seeing our class spilt up and some of our best friends go to Edgewood. Will anyone ever forget how happy we were when we finally received our class rings? Remember the Ring Dance and the antici- pation you felt when it came your turn to go through the ring? The high- light of our junior year was, of course, the Junior-Senior Prom. After much deliberation, we finally decided on a theme, Springtime Remember the fun we had decorating! Remember those rolls of crepe paper flying through the air while we were in the process of stretching it! Suddenly we realized we had made it. We were seniors at last! Remember our Hrst assembly? The elated feeling we had as we walked down the aisle while the underclassmen stood in respect. We had the honor of participating in the first Foreign Exchange Program at Overbrook. Annick Pasquet, our exchange student from France, was welcomed into our senior class where she took part in our activities. She was accepted by all the students as our honored guest. Will anyone ever forget our fabulous football team whose starting line-up was composed entirely of seniors? The senior response to our hayride, parties, and picnic at the end of the school year exemplified the enthusiasm of our senior class. All too soon, we realized that graduation was upon us. Although our minds were crowded with the exciting thoughts of activities and plans for our future careers, we knew that we would always remember the happiest years of our lives - our years at Overbrook. 32 MR. MCELHENNY Senior Class Adviser SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SITTING: Art Dayton, Vice President, George Clark, President STANDING: Laura Carter, Secretary, Al Ward, Treasurer. Without a good hard working class, there could never be a successful Senior Class President. It has been a great honor for me to serve in this capacity for our Senior year. I was indeed fortunate to have the wonderful cooperation and initiative displayed by you, the other officers, and Mr. McElhenny, our class adviser. I would also like to thank our I-Iomeroom Teachers, the Ad ministration, and Faculty, in forming new and interesting projects, which made 1959-1960 both active and pleasant for us. First, to the administration, our friends and advisors, we bestow our gratitude and apprecia- tion for its guidance to us during our years at Overbrook Regional. Second, to Mrs. Dugan, we leave the head- aches we caused her during our freshman and sophomore years. To Mr. McElhenney, our class advisor, we extend our whole-hearted thanks for his assistance with all our trials and tribulations. Third, to the juniors, we leave the honor of having the underclassmen stand while they walk down the aisle for assembly as seniors. Fourth, to the sophomores, we leave the privi- lege of wearing the school emblem on their finger. Fifth, to the freshmen, we entrust the privilege of joining the senior high. Sixth, to the eighth grade, we leave the priority of junior high. Seventh, to the seventh grade, we leave all the opportunities of the years ahead of them and hope they take advantage of them. And Hnally, all the rest of our estate we reluc- tantly will to the following unlucky recipients: George Clark, our president, leaves all the fun at the Senior parties to Jack Fisher. Art Dayton, our vice-president, leaves his player's notebook to Tony Pologruto. Laura Carter, our secretary, be- queaths all the fun in Room 103 to Janice Fuhrer. Al Ward, our treasurer, bequeaths the sprints after football practice to Bob Gruber. Gwen Williams, our Student Council president, bequeaths her indeciveness to her sister Betsy. Bill Graff is the lucky recipient of Elaine Seppy's fun coming home from D.E. meetings. Bill Mayer re- linquishes his love to Maureen Custalow. They all worked together with tremendous effort and team- work. School spirit, self-sacrifice, self-discipline, and hard work is the reason for our successful football season. The ,59 Rarns were the best all-around football players I have ever coached. Our team deserves the 100 respect of the entire student body for their beyond the call of dutyv efforts. , Most of our boys played in the entire garne, while other teams had the advantage of putting in sub- stitutes during the garne. We are all proud of Jack Pedano for his excellent kicking record and of our other players who received awards. 1 I I Q' Managers 8a Trainers: G. Nickles, E. Duncan, C. Cunane, H. Haines, R. Nobel, W. We congratulate you both on your achieve- ments, and we thank you for the praise and honor you have brought to Over- brook Regional High School. Our school is proud of having an All-American football player for the third consecutive year. Over- brook Regional High School is the only school in the United States to have ever achieved this dis- tinction. In 1958 Warren Maccaroni became our first All-American and the first player chosen from South Jersey in eleven years. Joe Moos kept up the tradition by becoming our second All-American in 1959. Finally, in 1960, Jack Pedano received the honor. jack was a unanimous choice for All Colonial Conference Center, All Group III Center, All South Jersey Center, and the Associated Press All State Center, besides having been chosen to play for the East on the All-American Eleven at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Hershey, Pennsylvania. During his senior year, Jack was co-captain of the Overbrook squad and did all of the kicking off. He set a new school punt average of 42 yards and made 21 out of 25 conversions. It was also announced that Coach Jack Herbert has been selected as the backfield coach for the All-American team this year. It is the First time a coach from the State of New Jersey has received this honor. -A--A-M , , 9 ..,.,,,, 9 , ARCHERY SITTING - P. Vining, M. Durfor, STANDING - J. Blackman, H. Griffith, B. Voight D.
