Let us introduce her to you. She is Mother Marie of the Immaculate Concep- tion. In this, the year of her golden jubilee, we, the gr duating class of 1955, wish to dedicate our year- b k to her as a tribute of gratitude. Go has Mered His blessings on Mother r M ie's ork years ago Wisdom consisted of p esent convent building. There were b first graduating class. The only in the biology laboratory were and a chart. The was but a In spite of this Mother e orts ere f it is ot the it s the t acher, and With the growing expansion, until ed registration n Yes, Mother Marie may able pride over her years as a Daughter of Wisdom. Not only was she the Foundress and first teacher of our school, but its principal for twenty-five years, before her nomination as Superior. Perhaps there is no more unequivocal sign of God's blessing upon a Catholic school than an ef- florescence of religious vocations among its grad- uates. God has not withheld this sign of His bene- diction from the school Mother Marie founded. The number of vocations among Wisdom's graduates warranted the erection in 1949 of an American pro- vince of the Daughters of Wisdom, of which Mother Marie was fittingly named the first Provincial. It is in this capacity that, with motherly interest, she con- tinues to watch over her dear Halls of Wisdom. Ad multos annosl 2 0 ' , . . These presents, these trifles, which seem too insignificant to offer to so great a Queen are the everyday happenings of our student lives, our studies, our household chores, our joys, and our disappointments. We are offering them to You because at Fatima You requested only the dedication of the daily tasks of our young lives. With these small offerings You are able to help souls who have na source of sacrifice and prayer to use in time of need. Help us to be kind, patient and obedient in school and at home. OLW Once again OLWA goes to press! An air of suspense has hung over the physics labora- tory for it was here that the staff gathered to plan a review of the year's activities. Every tidbit of news was utilized. There was much anxiety about meeting the first deadline, and when the precious pack- age was safely in the mails, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. It was a new and fascinating experience for the staff. At first it was difficult to adiust to the life of a reporter. Mysterious sounds came from the developing room as the iunior photographers strove to understand the work- ings of the complex developing equipment. The five o'clock crew fstaff to the uninit- iatedl delved into the problems of editing copy, checking on ads, and thinking up original situ- ations for pictures. When the work really got under way, the staff expanded their facilities to include a cozy corner of the library. The faculty and students soon became conditioned to the clicking of typewriters and calls to have your picture ta- ken at unusual hours. It was an eventful year and it is the hope of the staff that OLWA will bring laughter and pleasant memories to all Wisdomites. Gloria Olinkiewicz and Angela Malsano prepare a layout. But don't say like one Will Shakespeare, What's in a name? -because we are go- ing to dispute with the wise old genius and say Sagesse means very much to us. Translated from the French, Sagesse means wisdom, and wisdom predicates know- ledge, respect and beauty of mind-certainly a title to want to live up to. Besides reporting important events and reflecting the general school spirit in its editorials, Sagesse is the mirror of the daily school lives and times of Wisdomites. The legionnaires of Wisdom are only a few in Mary's vast army, but as students of Montfort's daughters, they have the advantage of a more in- timate understanding of its aims and spirit. The obiect of the Legion is the sanctification of its members by prayer and active cooperation in Mary's and the Church's work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ. The spirit of the Legion is that of Mary herself. Especially does the Legion aspire after her profound humility, her selffsacrificing love of God and her incomparable faith. Wisdom is proud of its five praesidia with a total of about 80 members. Although their activity is necessarily restricted because of their status as Junior Legionnaires, yet the girls act as a leaven for the entire student body by their Marylikeness. JA LIARY I955 CLASS DAY outa sTuDE T GOVERNMENT Government of the students, by the students for the students. . . This statement contains the essence of Wisdom's government. At the beginning of each term, senior candidates for school of- fices are chosen by the girls of the senior class. The vigorous campaign which ensues is climaxed on the day the girls cast their votes for their chosen officials. Later, of- ficers are elected from each individual class. They receive pins as insignia of their office. All the class presidents consitute the Student Congress, which meets every other week to discuss matters, under the direction of their faculty moderator, Sister Margaret. Each student is required to obey certain rules, for the infraction of which she re- ceives a summons. This necessitates an ap- pearance before the Student Court, which consists of a Chief Justice, four associate iudges, a court chaser, bailiff, secretary, as- secretary and porter. The Chief sistant Justice inflicts various penalties in proportion to the gravity of the offense. For more than a decade, Father Andrew Ansbro, C.P., has been a familiar and wel- come sight in Wisdom. St. Jeanne's is the most popular club in the Academy. Fr. Ansbro has accomplished this by his deep understanding, warm friendliness and de- sire to help teenagers. St. Jeanne's is Wisdom's vocational club. Every other Monday, the girls meet to discuss the married, religious and single states in all their aspects. To test their sharpness of wit, Father flings questions at the group. After each girl has voiced an opinion, Father clinches the dispute with an authoritative answer. It is a Wisdom tradition for Father to preach the Senior retreat, a fitting climax to four years of intensive Christian training. Father gives his rendition of Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet. The Speech Club, which is a member of the Eastern Catholic Forensic League, has for its purpose the de- velopment of an articulate Catholic laity through whose skill and zeal Catholic thought may be more widely disseminated and may become an influence in the life of the nation. With this laudable aim in view, the members participate in five types of oratory: original, extemporaneous, oratorical interpretation, apologetics and dramatic interpretation. Their work is not restricted to the classroom. lt finds worthwhile and practical ex- pression in such activities as organizing parish plays and entertainments.
