I OUR LADY OF VICTORY HIGH SCHOOL FORT WORTH, TEXAS Fonnwono Oppressed by the threat of Turkish domination in the sixteenth century, the Church armed herself under the command of Don Juan of Austria and the spirit- ual guidance of Pope St. Pius V. Through Our Lady's intercession, the Christian forces defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto, Greece, on October 7, 1561, thus ending the Turkish aggression. In commemmoration of this battle the Holy Father instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory. The Church today is faced with a threat no less real, no less terrible - the threat of Communism. As Christian men and women, we must likewise arm ourselves against the grave temporal and spiritual dangers which Communism presents. The education we receive at Our Lady of Victory High School prepares us for the fight against these dangers. But we are not merely taught what to fight against: we are given a cause to fight for - the cause of Christ. We are strengthened in this cause not only through our religious training, but in the sciences, languages, arts, technical skills, and social activity. Our.cover design is symbolic of the Battle of Lepanto. We see the Christian banner with its cross penetrating the broken Ottoman spear with its crescent blade and horse-tail. A ship from the Christian fleet rests anchored in the distance. While the Turkish shaft now lies useless and shamed. and the cause of Christ stands triumphant, let us march behind the shield of Our Lady of Victory, and look for the church to vanquish the hammer and sickle which challenges the flag of Christ today. f X 4 X DEDICATIQ We the students of Our Lady of Victory High School dedicate the first volume of Lepanto, 1962 to - Your Excellency, the Most Reverend THOMAS K. GORMAN Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth Without your guidance and encouragement the dream of our modern co-institutional high school would not have become a reality. May these pages reflect the fulfillment of many of your high ideals for us, and may we continue to live up to your greatest hopes and expectations. CONTENTS Campus. . Faculty . Graduates Classes . . Through selected courses, we, the graduates of OLV 1962, are fully aware of this insidious evil. As seniors, we had many opportunities to strengthen ourselves in sts' t he battle between good and evil. ln our prayerful study ofthe New Testament, we familiarized ourselves with our meek and humble Leader and His sweet and gentle Mother. In contrast, we studied the leaders of communism, their ideals and tactics and trained our minds to recognize the pattern these leaders have mapped out to destroy western civilization. In a special course on marriage, we reviewed the Church's teaching on the sacrament of Matrimony, its obligations, rewards, and importance as a factor in the fight against communism. We seniors realize that communism totally rejects everything America has come to accept and cherish. We accept the challenge that only by following Christ, by being perfect Christian Americans, can one join the battle no less serious than that of Lepanto and come out victorious. The preparation for the fight begins at home, but the study of it is intensified in school, in its curriculum and spiritual activities. Each year adds more strengthg no one can work too hard or learn too much. Even so, what one learns is but a foundation, but if the foundation be strong, the fortress will stand. X z 4 Juniors We Juniors fortified ourselves with a careful study of American his- tory and literature, a heritage the communists strive to ridicule and even destroy. In studying Part ll of the SUMMA THEOLOGICA, we arrived at a better understanding of right thinking and moral principles by which ophomores We Sophomores in our study of biology developed a keener perception of the beauty of creation and in particu lar, the dignity and perfection of the human body - only ' God could effect such things. The OLD TESTAMENT history disclosed to us the richness of the Iudeo-Christian tradition - a tradition the communists seek to erase. Freshmen We Freshmen began our training by surveying man's struggle with himself and others from ancient times to the present. There has always been evil to combat but only with God 's help can l evil be vanquished. Appreciation for the Church's liturgy deep-,..... -ll' ened as occasions presented opportunities for us to actively par- ticipate in liturgical functions. We will bury you, is the boast of the Communists. Will they? Only he who arms himself with the weapons of truth and justice and follow the leader Jesus Christ will win. Stimulated by active partici- pation in the liturgy throughout the year, students are better equipped Christian soldiers in the fight against the evils of the day. Each month, the school calendar marked some spiritual event. In September, the students attended the Mass of the Holy Spirit, offered by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Thomas K. Gorman, Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth. At this Mass, the celebrant prayed in a special way for a most successful year for the faculty and student body. Daily Mass Each morning during the school term, students who chose to do so attended Mass in the school chapel andfor auditorium. Reverend Paul Neumann, S.M. and Reverend Joseph Fuhrmann, O.S.B. offered Mass and heard con- fessions. Partial View of students attending daily Mass. fertory Procession . Rev. In this studentgovernment program the students endeavor to develop a sense of Christian responsibility, to exercise a prudent initiative, to foster coop- eration between students and faculty and between the school and the parishes and to encourage a spirit of good citizenship. The Student Councils of both divisions worked together to plan and sponsor the school dances and were able to purchase a statue of our Blessed Mother for the school and lights to be used for future dances in the gym. The Boys' Student Council wrote the constitutions for the Student Council with the help of the upper- classmen from Laneri, organized vocation month seminars, sponsored October Rosary Devotions and Liv- ing Rosary as well as May devotions. The Boys' Council also appointed student monitors for assemblies, lunch periods and movements, ordered and sold the school jackets, played host to incoming freshmen during their registration and sponsored the first Victory Frosh Day, sponsored a booth at the Mardi Gras and worked hard to back all school activities especially the athletics.
