S ister Mary lsabelle For almost twenty centuries, thousands of young women have chosen to follow Christ by the strictest obser- vance of His evangelical counsels. Dedicating their lives to prayer, penance, instruction of youth and care of the sick, they have fulfilled in a spiritual sense, the duties common to motherhood. One such woman is Mother M. Katherine Drexel, who looks back on a life of 94 years fruitfully spent. Mother Drexel is a member ofa prominent Philadelphia family. As a young girl, while traveling through the Pacific Northwest, she first noticed the struggling Indian Missions. A few years later in a private audience with Pope Leo XIII, she was encouraged to undertake missionary I work to relieve the situation among the Indians and the Negroes. Upon her return home, she told Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia of her desire to found a congregation for this task. The prelate suggested that she prepare herself in the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh. Two years later, in 1891, with Archbishop Ryan's approval she established the Sisters of the Blessed Sacra- ment for Indian and colored people. ln the ensuing years, one sturdy foundation after another was established. Her schools, health centers, and charity missions are now functioning in 20 states. Mother Drexel has become an outstanding example for those young women who dedicate their lives to God in reliaious orders.
