Therefore, with the greatest admiration and love, we dedicate this annual to those who have shared most in these memories--our own mothers. They will remain forever our inspirations, guides, and the most per- fect models for our future life. We are also deeply grateful to our senior sponsor, Sister Justin, who has been a great Factorin making this year a memorable one for each graduate. alia Title Page ..... Dedication ..... The condition of social and political unrest prevailing in the world today is such that it threatens to preiudice woman 's mis- sion as mother ofa family. Many movements are trying to win women for their cause. To follow their callwould entail depre- ciation of her true dignity, and the end intended by God for the good of the family, would be lost. The home is the most vital social unit in any democracy. It influences the actions of all society. Woman must realize that she was intended in God's Providence to be a mother, either in the physical or the spiritual sense, and today especially this obligation is conscience binding . ssl if .5 4 6 V 4 7 G 1 J, Q as wr AFI. Mary, the handmaid of the Lord , strove at all times to do the things that pleased God. In an effort to in- P 1 sure the stability of her family life, she must help not only to hold back those currents which threaten the home but also to oppose those doctrines which undermine its foundation. ln Blanche of Castile, wife of Louis XIII of France, we find an admirable example ofa good mother. Upon the King's death, Queen Blanche was left regentand guardian of their seven children. She gave all possible care and attention to the education of her children, instilling into their souls the highest regard and awe for everything that pertained to religion, honor, and a particular love for chastity. ls it any won- der then that in the person of her eldest son, King Louis IX, were united the qualities which formed a great king! Dedicating their lives to prayer, penance, instruction of youth and care of the sick, they have fulfilled in a spiritual sense, the duties common to motherhood. One such woman is Mother M. Katherine Drexel, who looks back on a life of 94 years fruitfully spent. Mother Drexel is a member ofa prominent Philadelphia family. As a young girl, while traveling through the Pacific Northwest, she first noticed the struggling Indian Missions. A few years later in a private audience with Pope Leo XIII, she was encouraged to undertake missionary I work to relieve the situation among the Indians and the Negroes. Upon her return home, she told Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia of her desire to found a congregation for this task. The prelate suggested that she prepare herself in the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh. Two years later, in 1891, with Archbishop Ryan's approval she established the Sisters of the Blessed Sacra- ment for Indian and colored people. ln the ensuing years, one sturdy foundation after another was established. Her schools, health centers, and charity missions are now functioning in 20 states. Mother Drexel has become an outstanding example for those young women who dedicate their lives to God in reliaious orders. Sister Marie Therese Another field in which woman's position is becoming very important is in the business and pro- fessional world . The young woman who chooses this state must realize her duty to uphold the splen- did opportunity to portray the Christian ideal of womanhood. She may freely engage in many noble and diversified good works and thereby contribute toward the total good of both society and the nation. We find this ideal realized in the life of Miss Irene Dunne. She, a Catholic, with others that we could mention, is a wholesome flowering in Hollywood's garden of considerable wild growth Miss Dunne, in l949, was the selection for the Laetare Medal made by the award committee of the University of Notre Dame. In announcing the award, the Very Rev. John J. Cavanaugh, presi- dent of the University, said: Miss Dunne is an example of talented Christian womanhood in a pro- fession and community unfortunately publicized for the briefness of marriages and careers.
