MOST REVEREND THOMAS A. BOLAND, S.T.D. Archbishop of Newark Our gracious Archbishop Boland has constantly given us for the past five years his untiring sup- port for every activity we have conducted here at Our Lady Of the Valley High School. On this occasion, we wish to acclaim our deep and sincere appreciation to our leader and fatherly guide for his kind encouragement. May we always remem- ber his teaching and example. We should like to express to Most Reverend Martin Stanton our con- gratulations on his being appointed auxiliary Bishop of Newark. We have very happy memories of the magnificent work the Bishop has done in the field of the missions. T0 Bishop Curtis we exlend our congratulations also. Bishop Curtis formerly guided the destiny of our priests at Immaculate Conception Seminary so he is well able to inspire in us some of the noble concepts of great Catholic faith. To all of these leaders, we say thank you and God keep you. and Spiritual inspiration Iiumwm- MW W ,, Not only the Juniors and Seniors enjoy the celebra- tion at Mayfair Farms. EDMUND COOK Lingering strains of the STAR SPANGLED BANNER or ONWARD VALLEY, or THE THUNDERER frequently Hoated around the vicinity of the lyceum, especially in the early part of the school year. The Valley Band held practices twice weekly in order to display them- selves with dignified pride during the football games. Their drilling and instrument practice paid OH on Saturday evening, September twenty- seventh at eight oiclock. That date marked the commencement of the second football season of Our Lady of the Valley High School. It is with justified pride that we salute the members of the hand. To single out any particu- lar group would be too great a task, but surely every Valleyite thrilled when they played the school song with such vivacity and sincerity. FRANK RENNER The band and the twirlers actually took over the field at the game this time. The snappy color guard get started. Valley 19 Music Makcrs The second season for the Twirlers and their vivicious routines brought sparkling gleams into the eyes of the spectators during the halves of the football games. The trim, neat uniform of these twirlers made a delightful appearance on the field. The spinning batons were championed by an enthusiastic captain, Jo Anne Curran. Marie Golembeski gave unstintingly of her time and knowledge, and thus deserves much commendation. Miss Gail Harris, the directress, thought up most of the routines. Remember her unique Charleston demonstrated at the Immaculate Conception game? ? ?? It would be a mistake to omit the names of Co-Captains, Marie Grosso and Mary Tasto, and also of those senior girls who di- rected the underclassmen in such perfect demonstrations. 1 'dc Ill ,m i W m a ...2$,r;$t,?xy .. 3715 5014514 4tCheer, cheer for old Valley High . . 3, could be heard resounding from every bench on the Valley,s side. We will long remember the classic touchdowns he scored this past season. That radiant glow of determination is sparked by his tremendous school spirit. Our able and popular captain, Frank Rizzo, did his utmost to lead the Knights to victory this season. Without his true fighting iiIrishii spirit, the boys probably would have lost their desire to keep fighting. Besides bolstering his boys' morale, Frank played very vigorously himself. a 11mm sclzcdulc: The glory of the Valley is refiected in these seven able- bodied seniors. Jim Gerraty, Thomas Callahan, Frank Rizzo, Harry Banker, Jerry Penta, Pete Gruchaez and Tommy Ucciardi. Faced with the problem of inexperience, a tough schedule, and the task of replacing thirteen lettermen lost in last yearis squad, the goal of a winning season proved an unsurmountable object. Their record was eight to one . . . the single victory being over Park Ridge. They were not victors every time, but each man doing his best, they put on a good show . . . and indeed therefore, had moral victory. Frank Rizzo, Captain, inspired his team with both spirit and determination. Touchdowns were scored by Jimmy Cerraty and Bobby Longo, with the able assistance of Tommy Callahan, Jerry Penta, Tommy Ucciardi, Jack Walsh, and'ITkter Gruchacz, the defensive linemen. Since all play and no work is definitely not a policy of Our Lady of the Valley High School, we who enter the portals become imbued with good study habits. Whether it is memorizing lines from a master author, or solving a simple equation, we apply ourselves with equal diligence, for we realize that knowledge is 'power. Our logical powers of concentration are sharpened by studying subjects, which in the eyes of the administration, will fit us to take our rightful places in society and bring credit to ourselves and our school. In the following pages, we offer a tiny glimpse of our daily school life. Without fear of ridicule or without offering any excuses, we are certain that if we follow the lessons and instructions of our teachers, we shall eventually become good citizens as well as good Catholics. ?ng . The student pulse on national, social, economical and school events is felt and recorded through this medium. The Valley proves itself no exception to this honored custom in its proud production of the VALLEY VOICE. Nothing of interest escapes any one of the many reporters. Small wonder then, that this sparkling publication delights the students. Keeping pace with its predecessors, the 1958 VALLEY VOICE has added greatly to the journalistic prestige of the Valley. Under the efficient leadership of Co-editors Catherine Zima and Carol Polakowski, it is truly a finished product of teenage journalism of which we may honestly boast. 1, g i i Art Editors Maryanne Carlson and Marcos Camargos sketch most of the clever cartoons and symbolic drawings in the Valley Voice. Re Nwmv The Valley has always been known for the excellence of its choral work. The Christmas program, the Musical each year and background music for graduation are among some of the principal highlights which have drawn compliments from far and near. Sister David Marie, our new musical director, has been working with the glee club all year, helping them carry on the reputation the Valley has gaihed for its vocal work. Besides a good mxxiwwxxx wk kt ?QWWWVV x x- 4 x xx mxx waw NMW , :t x XXX t NW xx exxxxmmm x voice, the members of the glee club must have a special love of singing, but even more important they must be willing to work hard to achieve the perfection that characterizes performances of Our Lady of the Valley High School. This year the Christmas Carols were especially effective with their finale of the Divine Babe in the arms of the Blessed Mother, portrayed by Susan Domalewski. The triptych was especially appropriate for its richness and beauty. Of course, the Glee Club distinguished itself completely during the many performances of THE GREAT WALTZ. We have ample opportunity every day of our lives to consider with gravity the effects that a good life will have on our future happiness. Besides the religion courses which are offered, we have supplememary aids to spirituality. Some of these include the privilege of seeking advice in the confeSsional daily, the companion- ship of priests who are friendly and helpful, the annual retreat, the May Procession, and other devotions to Mary, like the Sodality, the Society of the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament and the devotions for First Friday. The seniors also enjoy the prerogative of a day of recollection shortly before graduation day. This little group is preparing to recite the rosary. William Kane finishes making the stations as Marie Cerone begins them. To follow Christ daily in His passion is a daily privilege enjoyed by those in retreat. One of the highlights of our school year is the annual retreat. It gives us an opportunity to brush away the cobwebs of indifference that may have a weakening effect on our moral life. At retreat time, we have conferences, meditations, and extra spiritual exercises designed to help us balance our account with God. Since classes are temporarily suspended, the worries and anxieties of scholastic work dissolves, and we can thus concentrate more readily on the calling God .has in store for each of us. This year, Father Reynolds, our retreat master, tried to make us realize the responsibility that God places on the shoulders of all Catholic High School graduates. In between the spiritual exercises this little group combines reading with sunshine. Edith Davis takes time out at the Summer School of Catholic Action to rest her weary bones.
