Each student of Our Lady of the Valley High is presented with the privilege of Our Lady's specific protection through his acceptance into the Sodality, which occurs during the Freshman Year. The Sodality is an intricate part of the life of each student. Through persistent participation in its numerous activities, a truly Catholic life is duly encouraged, which is practiced not only during high school years, but also in the world of tomorrow. llllll These Freshmen Prohationists are caught in a happy mood with their moderator, Sister Leo Joseph. All look forward to the day of their reception into the sodality when they will share in the indulgences grunted to its members. The senior officers of our Lady's Sodality hold the key for all its activities. Mary Patricia Brennan, Chairman of the Apostolateg Marie Gallagher, Prefectg Joan Lutz, Chairman of the Spiritual Activities Group, and Marcia Powers, Secretary-Treasurer. The sophomore members of the Active Sodality receive instruc- tions from Senior Socialists, Mary Pat Brennan and Marcia Powers concerning the next Sodality project. YVhy its one of those days when The Valley Voice comes off the press. t'The Valley Voicef' the school's newspaper, brings reading enjoyment four times a year to sonic bl-90 high school students. Our paper is truly an organ of interest to teachers and pupils alike. Ohs and ahs are prevalent when A'The Valley Echoesi' shows that the reporter has secreted a bit of jolly, and sometimes private, information, which was a bit on the tranquil side up until then. This column has long been a favorite and we trust it will continue to entertain for many years. For the record collectors there is the Platter Chatter column. This column brings one up to date on the top hits which are sure to rate in his collection. Then we have that sports headline, The Irish lVhirl, to capture and hold the interest of the athletic-minded. From these able men, he chose Don Jones and lilddie Topar, Co-Captainsg Jim Desmond, Bill Venino. and Carmine Pecararo to form the nucleus of the new team. After a meager 2 and 5 record, there was a change made in coaches. Mr. Olivola was promoted to assistant Athletic Director and Mr. Murphy as- sumed the duties of coach. Mr. Murphy reshaped the team and added Richard Kliminski to the starting five. Under the new coach, the Valley became the highest scoring team in the county. Though not possessing an impressive record, the boys upset Orange and Seton Hall who were the top teams in Essex County. This year's team was the first in Valley history to record a 100 points in one game. In two games our boys scored 20-14 points. A remarkable feat! .1 Murphy. Mary Ann McHugh leads the team of spirited players whose careful plays are the result of long hours of after school practice. It is Valley's tradition to have a hard fighting girls' team and this 1955-56 season under the watchful surviellance of Miss Carol Maurer has proved another triumphant year. The team has a strong backing from their teammates which has been a valuable asset. Our managers have a full time job arranging our heavy schedules and supporting our cause. In this year's team we have the spirit, the skill, and the sportsmanship that go into making real champions. Seeded second, Our Lady of the Valley High successfully con- fiscated the title CHAMPIONS OF NEW JERSEY NORTHERN CATHOLIC GIRLS' LEAGUE TOURNAMENT. The girls defeated Mt. St. Dominic, Immaculate Conception, and St. Dom- inic, jersey City, respectively, to become the Champs of the newly- formed league. Through this victory, the girls gained the second of the three legs necessary in order to retire the Mother Aquinas Trophy permanently. In addition, the Blue and Whiters also received the tournament trophy and twelve individual trophies thus designating them CHAMPIONS OF 1956. -7' '1- X JUNE DIEBEL Forward i 4 It's bou eau - 1 plain to see the anxiety in these girls' faces as they Jump for thc re ntl during the game with St, Vincent's. A few of the stalwarts returning from last yearis varsity include: Butch Garafalo, Hd Topar, Chick O'Connor, Joe Bradley, Andy Grosso, Ralph Sabatino, and the Pecararo twins. This year's schedule features a series with Orange High for pos- session of the new Monsignor Mechlcr trophy to be awarded to the winner of the two out of three games series. The positions on this year's team almost all tied down, dueto the loss of only one regular because of graduation.
