Mechler, has tirelessly devoted his life to the service of God and the care of souls. Fortunately for us the last ten years have been spent here in Our Lady of the Valley parish where we, the students of Our Lady of the Valley High School, have been the grateful recipients of his ever watchful and tender devotion. Each one of these ten full years has seen the ever-increasing progress, spiritual and material, of both parish and high school in the Valley. And today we rejoice with our dear Pastor in the fulfillment of his dreams and the achievement of great goals as the glorious chapter of the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Parish is brought to a fitting close, and he stands triumphant within the ever brightening glow of its Centenary, in future years. In recognition of the gigantic strides he has made in our parish, and at the recommendation of Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII saw lit to elevate our beloved pastor to the rank of Domestic Prelate of the Papal Household on june 15, 1948. Happy, indeed, are we at this honor, and mark of highest approbation of Holy Mother Church, which has been set upon our Shephei-d's work and accomplishment. In deep appreciation and gratitude for our four privileged years spent beneath Monsignor's daily guardianship, we, the graduating class of Nineteen Forty-nine, DEDICATE this Yearbook, the culmination of our best efforts, to our Beloved Friend and Pastor, Monsignor Mechler. law '- HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS JOSEPH WALSH, S.T.D., j.C.D. Archbishop of Newark May' we talce this opportunity of expressing the deepest gratitude of our entire student body to our gracious Archbishop for all his kindly interest and active participation in the ever memorable activities resultant from that glorious occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the parish of Qur Lady of the Valley. It was our happy privilege to have Bishop McNulty not only give generously of his time and sacerdotal power in the Consecration of Qur Church but to smile a while with us at our social festivities in honor of the event. While we have a number of our graduates in the Seminary at the present time studying for' the priesthood, Father Naedele is the third to have reached that priestly Milestoiie of Ordination since our first graduating class in 1933. The close of the retreat was marked by a most enjoyable Communion Breakfast served to all the students of our High School in the Auditorium of the school. This was presided over by our revered pastor, Monsignor Michael A. HJIII MUHIVS IIHAlll lil Each morning of Retreat found almost the en- tire student body of the High School at the altar rail receiving God's precious gift so neces- sary for us to carry on in this workaclay world of ours. Father Lucian, assisted by Charles Poppre, carries on this wondrous work as he distributes Holy Communion to the Senior girls. Our Retreat Master is instructing a group of our Senior boys in the art of developing their spiritual life in imitation of their Divine Master. Spiritual bulletins and helpful thoughts for Retreat are posted daily on the Bulletin Board. The camera caught one of the Senior groups, consisting of Doris-Kuboviclr, Ann Mehl, Frank Wheatley, Ann McCabe and Samuel Gianti as they copy these down for future reference. ' Well begun is half done is an old adage but one which never loses its truth and effectiveness. Throughout the three-day Retreat, our student body carried out this adage by assisting daily at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by our Retreat Master, Father Lucian, while their minds and hearts were lifted on high in prayer and hymns of supplication and devotion. f I ll' mv, X I .Xt xx I 1 'I-I I . VER IHE PlAl'S lHl lHI ll. Victor Hcrhert's charming and humorous operetta, The Red Mill has had a long and varied career. It began its famed history back in 1906 and now, thirtyfthree years later, it has been presented, with clever and skillful technique, resulting in a dramatic performance of splendor and elegance by the students of our high school. This outstanding production owes its success to the competent direction of our beloved Superior, Mother Rose Vincent, and the excellent musical training of our Glee Club which is under the capable supervision of Sister Agnes Loyola. The wit of 'lKid Connor and Con Kidder, ably played by john Woods and Leo Woodruff, forms the base upon which this musical comedy was built while a quaint atmosphere was created by the artistic and picturesque handfpainted scenery including the old haunted Red Mill. The humorous dialogue moved quickly and was enlivened by such captivating songs as The Streets of New York, Whistle It, Isle of Our Dreams, Every Day Is Ladies' Day With Me, Bef cause You're You and Moonbeams. All in all our applauding audience vehemently declared that our 1949 production of The Red Mill was a Broadway performance. 'Mffof JUWLMQ, . . Our Pages announced each operetta in turn. Our smiling pastor, Monsignor Mechler, cuts the Dia- mond Jubilee Cake baked for the occasion while the visit- ing clergy look on. A miniature replica of the first Church building formed the decoration surmounting the cake. Only a Rose from Vagabond King proved a favorite as Teresa and Joseph Arno! once again revived this enchanting melody. Who doesn't love that enchanting tune, Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life, from Naughty Marietta, our 1948 production. Paul Monte and Margaret Haas enjoy reliv- ing the old days. Our Lady of the Valley completed what is Considered one ol' the most successful haskethall sea' sons since varsity competition was added to that high schools athletic calendar. The Valley dropped the curtain on the 194949 schedule hy winning the Class B championship of the New jersey Catholic Athletic Association at the Seton Hall College gym on Ivlarch 'ZW before a crowd of more than l,fDf'l0 spectators. The championship was hrought to the Valley institution following its 47 to 42 victory over a sup' posedly strong St. IVIary's quintet of Rutherford which has Frank Ruggiero of Orange as its coach. The two teams had split in two games played during the regular schedule. It was a fitting climax to the Valley which had previously missed out in the Essex County and New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Associa' tion tournaments. But the Valley did accomplish a herculean feat during the County tourney and that was to eliminate the numher one seeded team, West Orange. And the Cowhoys later captured the Group IV State Championship. -Kxiigxl. u A A 1 Y 42.- Richard Vogt, Jimmie Ahearn and Charlie Mc- Laughlin, together with Manager Scoop McHugh, 'lg A smilingly exhibit the CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES. ,C-' Jimmie Ahearn makes the First Five Coimry ALL- 1 'fr i STAR HONOR ROLL. Three cheers for Valley! Soley made it in spite of strong opposition! X TfEfAfM! yea, team! And what a team we have this year! With our cofcaptains, Richie Vogt and Charlie lvlclsaughlin, the Hcinderella kids of little Our Lady of the Valley got off to a fine start. Toward the end of our season, we suff fered the loss of Richie Vogt due to an ankle injury, thus leaving Charlie McLaughlin and our new addi- tion, Jim Ahearn, to carry on through the final games and the opening of our Hrst tournament games in the Essex County Tournament. Believe it or not, we proudly upset the West Orange team and came through until the semiffinals. Richie Vogt came back in the State Tournament and put his old spark in the team and helped us come up to the finals in the North Jersey Division of the New Jersey State Tournament. Numbered among our players this -year are Charlie Mclsaughlin, of whom we're very proud, especially in the wonderful defense games he has been playing, Richie Vogt, Irvington's loss, jim Ahearn, and his basketball pal, Big jim Mooney, and Jimfjim Ennis and Jack Soley, who improved with every game, and also Herbie Mardany, Ronnie Bush' well, Sam Cianti, and Whitey Lee. Striving always with fighting hearts and deter' mined wills, our Girls' Varsity, under the capable guidance of Miss Tomasko, our coach, and the lead' ership of our staunch captain, Mzirie Stopfer, achieved an cnviahlc record. Proud are we of our Eve good forwards, Marie Stopfcr, Maureen Mc' Kenna, joan Carroll, Joan Moran and Josephine Genovese, always with their eyes glued on the hal! and the basket, while our dcfense leaders, Patricia Walsh, .Ioan Koehler and Bernadette Boyle, formed an excellent hulwark against the onslaught of our opponents. The most tense and exciting game of the season was that of Valley vs. St. Vincent's team, played on the Valley court. A heavily favored St. Vin' cent's team was met and overcome by our hard fighting girls. Not once did they give St. Vincent's an opportunity to surge ahead. Patricia Walsh was outstanding in her defensive playing against the tall forward, Rita Hekker. Our forwards outfmaneuvf ered their guards to get the greatly needed Held goals time and again. What a delight to our eyes to see that ending score 31-26 in our favor, But alas, for our hopes! Sad to relate, our return game on St. Vineent's Court did not result so happily.
