When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, think like a child, and argue like a child, but now that I am a man, all childish things are put behind me. The Prep Volume 27 The Seminary of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels San Fernando, California Four years is not too Long —but it is sufficient. It is long enough for small endeavors (that in themselves are great accomplishments). And as each obstacle is en- countered and conquered, we learn a little more, we forge ahead a little farther. This is growth - a physical mental and spiritual devel- opment. We do not make great strides but progress step by step — and each moment. Though our pace is slow it is also constant. Our growth is directed towards a very real end-perfection. With such a goal in mind shall we best serve Cod and Man. Our best example to follow is Christ Himself. Indeed, He becomes our ultimate ideal. Thus our challenge is ex- actly this: to become the WHOLE MAN —Another Christ. Dedication In the person of our Seminary Rector we have one who always strives to be the Whole Man - the Other Christ. In recognition of his sterling example and his devotion to duty, we dedicate this annual to the Very Reverend William J. Mahoney, CM. ■God is the direction of our growth in light of the Mass and the Rosary. Physical endeavor broadens our growth. We as seminarians, here in the seeding ground, are aware of the diligence, zeal and fortitude exerted by our parents during our early years to form and fashion us in our physical, mental and spiritual growth. We are aware also of the time and trouble spent by teachers in the grammar grades to further that growth. And we have also the awareness at the present time of the efforts expended on us by the teachers here at the seminary. Happily, for us, these teachers are not just educators. Rather, they are people concerned about our greater welfare - spiritual as well as mental - in their desire to direct our minds and hearts to Cod. As individuals dedicated to Christ, they reflect our own ambitions and goals. Energetically, they share the joys of Christian union with us and do all they can to nurture our growth. Seniors: Finally at the Top Senior year is one of mixed emotions and ideas: turmoil and serenity, uncertainty and decision, confidence and insecurity. Much emphasis is placed on the future, the next year. So many conflicts and persistent problems that demand immediate attention. It ' s made easier by the experience of the past three years. The days and the hours are slow, while the weeks and months run fast. It seems familiar yet there is a hint of change. Some- times there ' s a sense of being alone and other days there is a feeling of great independence. There is the knowledge that we shall not pass this way again. And, above all, the realization that this is not the end but the beginning. I don ' t like work-no man does- but I like what is in work-the chance to find yourself. Your own reality-for yourself, not for others-what no other man can ever know. Joseph Conrad I ■Responsibilities y?c ■They started the year with the optimism of the newly elected though none of the four knew exactly what they could do, what they should do, or what people expected them to do. The first months constituted a crash course in learning how to work simul- taneously with students, faculty, and each other — a game without rules where trial and error was the only text. But hard work brought results. Gradually the newness dissolved into experience. They grew into a closely co-ordinated group, whose jobs as representa- tives, organizers and mediators were all part of being student body officers. One of the hardest jobs of a president is to do the right thing at the right time. The pressure is on at every moment. There is always something to do, either at the im- mediate second or a long-range project. This great challenge gives me the oppor- tunity to serve the school in any possible way. TOM CAHILL, STUDENT BODY PRESI- DENT ■I I ■The vice-president is the behind-the-scenes man. Yet a govern- ment would be incomplete without him. He not only leads the students in supporting the president, but also plays a vital role in determining school policies. JOSEPH SHEA, STUDENT BODY VICE-PRESIDENT In my opinion the secretary ' s most important duty is not to take notes but to participate in the meeting and to evaluate the pros and cons of each proposal and to vote accordingly. JOHN MURPHY, STUDENT BODY SECRETARY The best part of my job is the tremendous responsibility. I am trusted enough to handle all of the students ' money. Parents Sponsor Successful Mexican Dinner Have you ever been in these buildings when there was no one else around? The students have gone home for the weekend and you are by yourself waiting. The empty classrooms and halls are void of human activity. In fact, theschool is like a body without a soul. The seminary has its vitality in the students. Without them it is dead. Each grade distinctive- ly contributes to the personality of the school. Each student adds his special spark of life. If one person succumbs to selfishness or lets down a little, the seminary structure is weaken- ed and the rest of us suffer. We need each other. No one but a fool trys to make it by himself. Alone our way is feeble and progress faulty. Together we find strength and courage. Together we can learn to live and love and grow in Christ. JUNIOR CHALLENGE: A GREATER INVOLVEMENT At last they were upper- classmen. Life was a little more serious, time a bit more precious. They soon became aware, though, that the title carried with it more that a few head- aches. For many it meant more work, responsibility, and frustration than any- one could have guessed. It was a year of skipping a few hours sleep to cram for a test, and talking col- lege. The work, the worry, the difficulties were part of it all. They were the ones carrying schedules to each class, wondering about what came next, trying nerv- ously to look as if they knew what they were doing. Finding themselves in a classroom with strangers was regarded as a experience, and if there was anything good about those first few weeks it was finding everyone else in the same boat.
