Education is lacking if it relies on human un- derstanding alone. Complete education must include knowledge gained from both divine and human authority. Therefore, Mercians revere their school motto: Virtus et Scientiaf' be- cause it embodies this Christian concept. Fundamental principles of virtuous living are inculcated through daily religious instruction and this Christian spirit permeates all phases of study. The experience and culture of other generations, intricacies of math, scientific ex- perimentation, and the artof expression provide a liberal education, while the practical arts of home living and business world equip a student in fruitful vocational training. Education which unites virtue to knowledge is true education, for according to His Holi- ness Pope Pius XI such an education exists . . . to elevate, regulate, and perfect Qhuman lifej, in accordance with the example and teach- ing of Christ.

To Know God Is Religious instruction is the hallmark of Catholic education, thus students view their daily religion classes as the most important. Through the pages of the Bible, freshmen ob- serve God's love and noble design for man, while sophomores see a more perfect fulfillment of that love through a study of the Mass and sacraments. Juniors meet St. Thomas' analysis of the virtues and Seniors seek practical answers to the challenge of young Catholic adulthood. In October, Fr. Charles O'Neill addressed all students concerning the importance of vocations. Joyce Ford, Diane DeLorenzo, and Gail Lofstom inspect the religious articles which Fr. Burroughs has on display for his classes.
