Im afraid of spxdersl She dldn t have one Hopmg to make the best of a rather dell cate s1tuat1on B111 and I crawled under the bleachers When we reached the other end we decxded not to go out that moment due to the proxlmxty of the two young gentlemen stand mg Just outside After a whlle smce they de- clmed to let us make our exit privately we did so pubhcly causing a rather stupxfied Well on their part accompamed by a slightly dumb By Lam Allen, 46 founded stare Drsregardmg them we went behmd a huge curtam back of the bandstand where Woodys band was takmg an mter mrssxon There be sat calmly sxppmg a coke not more then ten feet away wholly unap proachable The manager was shovmg every body away and smce we were among the everybodles we were also among the shoved We retreated to the dance floor danced for approximately four bars gave rt up as a varn endeavor and tried to thmk of another plan After an hours concentrat1on I suddenly wondered whom I knew that could get me to Woody Just as suddenly the answer came, Officer Jensen' Thereupon we plagued every policeman who had the mlsfortune to come m s1ght, untll we found Officer Jensen m the cloak room whlch he wrote a note to the officer at the bandstand asklng him to take me to Mr Her man As good as the plan was, Im afrald we rel1ed a blt too much on the aputude of said ofiicer When I took the note to h1m he handed xt to the manager thmkmg It was Just a scrap of paper on whnch I wanted an auto graph The manager who by th1s tlme had become lement enough to permlt Woody to sign the papers began to take It to lum Read nt' I pleaded loud enough for hlm to hear Read lt' He nonchalantly glanced over the page and walked back shaking lus head wlth a firm No' Though I put all the dramat1c ab1l1ty I possessed ln my publrcatlon, he remalned stead fast Farlure agam was chalked down We plunged back mto the churning human sea down to Officer Jensen who suggested that we see Chief Copenhagen I gulped and with Bxll spearheading the advance, trudged off When we found the chief and explamed our 45 4 , , u ,Q ,j 0 0 , ,I x N K J ' 3 Q , ' 9 1 . . , . 1111551011 he told us he was helpless since the manager had sent word to h1m to keep the people away from the band during the mter m1ss1on However he too offered a plan During the last part of h1s number I was to slft mto the crowd dlrectly ln front of the bandstand and when Woody had reached the climax of the plece I was to yes swoon The plan was certainly umque but a llttle drastic and we dec1ded not to use It At th1s pomt things looked very dxscour agmg unt1l Ofiicer Jensen promised that he hun self would take me to Woody lf I would Walt unt11 he got out of the cloak room at twelve thlrty B1ll knit h1s eyebrows Tlns presented a problem we had come double datmg 111 an other boys car and that boy had to leave at eleven fifty Naturally with hmm would go the car When we finally dec1ded to walt, B111 of fered a fervent prayer of thanks to God for The problem now was to determine what to do w1th our t1me We wasted no effort on dancmg durmg the forty five minutes that were left We knew that such an attempt would be futlle 1f not dxsastrous havmg al ready trxed lt several tlmes Since we were st1ll somewhat dubious as to whether or not Officer Jensen would actually get to Woody Herman we tried to dev1se st1ll another means such as starmg at him whlle he was d1rect1ng the band until he utlmately broke down Once I succeeded in catchmg h1s eye and he no doubt perplexed by the hostile determined look on my face returned my stare for an uncomfortable moment It dldnt help the situatlon Then Blll concluded that we were hungry and we went downstairs to spend the last fifteen mmutes eatmg hot dogs slightly the worse for rawness There we stood looking like two people who had never seen a chair 1n their l1ves and were endeavormg to hold up the wall Finally the crucial moment arrlved We met Ofiicer Jensen and he proceeded to lead us at the pace of a race horse through the shghtly dxmmlshmg crowd For a moment my feet yearned to be ln the1r barefoot days once more but one look at the hammenng legs around me made me reloxce that this wlsh was not real1zed When we reached the band whlch was once more takmg an 1nterm1ss1on Officer jen sen after talklng wlth the other pollceman for a few seconds went right over to Woody Herman, with me at h1s heels and gave the thousand dollar mtroductlon Mr Herman Id l1ke you to meet M1ss Lorls Allen She s from a very select school for glI'lS here in Rochester Cnote plugj and she would like to obtam an lntervlew How do you do rumbled my hero How do you do I trembled Officer Jensen quietly slipped away and we were left alone I was standmg there w1th Woody Herman on the first rung of mv long ladder to future success My entlre hfe hung ln the balance and what was my first colossal question? Mr Herman how d1d you happen to get the name Woody? Well he rephed my parents named me Woodrow To An Open Field Haven of lovelmess Are you the power Greens and blues That makes all things grow5 Who was the art1st That blended these hues?
