Farewell to Mercy Not so very long ago we were Freshmen bewlldered shy Just a b1t fearful of what If was all about But very soon we too caught somethmg of that xntan 1ble lndescrlbable Sp1r1t that IS Mercy s Mxssxon Days bas ketball games oratorlcal contests 111 trlumph or defeat we found ourselves holdmg her banners h1gh for all to see It was th1s Splut of Mercy that prevalled through our four years and Proms Chr1stmas Plays F1eld Days the solemn beauty of a Vlay Day ceremony Unconsclously we watched three classes mount the stage for graduatlon never seemmg to reahze that someday It would be our turn And so lt was these our four years at Mercy ordmary Hxgh School vears perhaps but to those of us who have looked to her for 1nsp1rat1on and have found lf rn the llves and hearts of her teachers and m the sm1le of Mary the1r model they have been sacred years Soon the class of 46 wxll be but a memory for they say now that lt 19 trme for us to leave Mercy So much a part of all she has taught us we cherlsh and take XVltl'1 us but so much a part of our hearts We leave behmd Helen S ebm, 46 Qiifigfiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigi made them roll in a succession of never-to-be forgotten events-Junior Wfififififififififiiiiififififiii

Signs af Sprmg The first slgns of sprmg The sun rlsmg earher w1th a rich red glow And brmgmg a warmth not found IH wmter days The wlnd carrylng fresh smells from kltchen stos e and open barn A llttle boy xx andermg off to the hills w1th hls dog Boundmg over the rocks and through the half meltmg snow To find the first clear brook of sprmg A mother amng the heavy quxlts of wmter Upon lmes once sunk beneath the weight of roar1ng bhzzards Young men rn the vlllage store talkmg of sprmg plantmg and new crops Half forgettmg the wlnter s pleasure of courtmg the1r gll'lS And leavmg weddmg plans to flustered mothers and delmous, yoyful maldens Smoke curhng hazlly above the barren woods from some logger s camp or sugar mlll For the summer crews w1th hydraulic drxlls and plck and ax A teacher requestmg the School Board to please cut the grass 1n the sprmg The wandermg hobos leavmg wmter quarters ln vrllage and town and gomg west mto the sunset The purple haze of tw1l1ght when farmers brmg foammg mrlk from the barn And cornbread IS set upon the table 1n all lts golden glory These are the first signs of sprmg that come before the first green blade IS seen Before the rob1ns come chlrplng from the Southland And the first furrow IS turned by the farmer s plow These are the first slgns of sprmg that thr1ll the heart wlth a hght achmg throb And set restless feet wandermg and eager mrnds xmagrmng Of magmficent plans and gallant deeds If these are the xnfinlteslmal slgns of sprlng that God gave to the earth What must be the IIIHDICC beautles of the heavenly kmgdoma Ezleevz Cadogan, '46 . . .
