-if Eadiefwas a pretty rad apple until Ruthie .vet ber wzse and Scotty gaue ber incentiwe is 5ad1e and the ,Yun 0 Pm FRESHMEN NOT INVITED dont want to appear smug but after all you really have to admit that I dzd have a lot to do w1th Eadles popularity And even though she zs my big sister C23 months older to be exactj I have to confess that it wasn t too easy at that It all began about a month ago As soon as the date of Central Highs junior Prom was announced I fairly had kittens I was mdig nant because being a freshman I couldn t go I remember that day very clearly As I came in from school I slammed the back door so hard that the dishes rattled 1n the cupboards Heavens Ruthie be careful my mother warned in that special patient tone of VOICC she always used for me I cant help it Mums I fumed pecking her on the cheek as I dumped my books on the table Im so furious I could tear the whole door down with my two hands, I said biting into a large sugary doughnut for you after school? Mums asked with a decided twinkle in her exe No IIS worse than that I replied lndig nantlv Then Eadie came in from the llY1!'1ff room where she had apparently heard my ranting What s the matter Wlth you she asked dis dainfully Did thev mn out of lemon cokes at the Bird s Nest? Or didn t they play your favorite Benny Goodman record? Xou know whats the matter I howled The junior Prom I can t see what that has to do with all this fuss opinionated mv innocent mother Well we re having a Junior Prom at school and its to be from nine til one semi formal Ed Ryan is going to plav and fresh men aren t allowed to go That in a nutshell 10 By Fran Gram 46 is the reason for my temporary 1nsan1ty Can you blame me? I finished in what I hoped was a pathetic tone There must be a good reason Ruthie, why freshmen arent allowed Eadies a junior perhaps she can explain It We turned to Eadie expectantly Well I dont exactly know myself she said slowly, but I suppose I could ask some one You dont know? I asked amazed at her ignorance It s your very own prom and you don t know anything about itl' I could hardly believe my ears Could it be possible that Eadie my very own sister, and a Junlor wasn t going? The look of dawnmg realization that was spreading over my face must have bothered her because Eadie turned around and walked back into the living room Stupified I sank into a chair hardly even noticing that a spindle hit me right in the serious thinking in my fourteen year old l1fe Several doughnuts and about an hour later I arrived at a course of action having decided definitely that my sister was in a well worn rut So with a determmed look I sauntered into the living room and turned on the radio full blast to my favorite record program The ear split ting notes of Louis Prima s trumpet shattered the silence of the room and had the desired effects on Eadie who was elbow deep in Cicero translation She rose a full ten inches off her chair Murmurmg my apologies I turned the radio down but it was st1ll an 1m possibilitv for Eadie to study there Go away pest she muttered through clenched teeth so Mums wouldn t hear I-In en t you anything to do besides bother ing me? , ' P 1 .
