flare and Uzcrc' FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET IMAGINATION OVERWORKED ROSENIARY LETMBERGLR 47 THE LONG WAY HOME DOROTHY SULLIVAN 46 T wAs ABOUT n1ne thlrty one November evenmg and I was walkmg home from the llbrary I was hurrymg along because the a1r was cold rt made a stmgmg feelmg m my throat when I ln haled Suddenly as I was crossmg the street I became conscrous of a short dark heavy set man about five houses behmd me When I turned down the street on wh1ch I l1ve he turned down the street too I started runnmg and the V1ll12H behmd me d1d llke wxse When I stopped he contmued and was soon close behmd me My heart beat llke a seven hundred dollar set of drums I felt a cold sweat envelop my body the short dark heavy set man was st1ll FOLLOWING me One thought entered my head to reach my home wlth rts warmth and safety as qulckly as posslble I turned my head and saw that he was only a few yards behmd me My walk became almost a runnlng pace The street seemed more deserted and I felt more alone Soon I could hear the move ment of h1s heavy body behmd me In a low gruff volce I heard hlm call out Hey' I trned to scream but nothmg would come out Before I knew xt he grabbed me by the arm I was terrified' I wheeled around There stood the man with a book ln his up to you ever SIDCC I couldn t even sav thanks I was so bewlldered' 000 AST FALL on my first day at Mercy I broke a time honored tradltlon the thought of wh1ch transgresslon now makes me re coll from my former msensltlve self After a confusing round of new rooms new classes new faces all punctuated wlth bells bells bells I stood young and mnocent attempting to declde on a plan of actlon that would termmate yust outs1de the nearest exlt and make me free just down the hall was the only exxt ln sight Well you all know that the shortest dlstance between two pomts IS a stralght lme so I navl gated ln lust that dlrectxon wlth a bold a1r of self assurance Poor 1gnorant me' XIV dramatxc exlt was made amxdst stares and gl gles and obuous censure Llttle d1d I realize that I had commxtted the unpardonable breach at Mercy After a short pe r1od of agomzmg mental torture and self scrutmy some kmd soul gently mformed me that We dont use the from door 23 5 . . . . . . - By , ' , ' I 9 1 ' ' 5 7 V 7 4 is I . ,, . . 1 - j 1 , - A , . - 3 . . . , , ' 3 . . . , . , ' CL 79 ' ' 9 ' Q . , . . hand. In the mxdst of dances partxes r1d1ng and plcmcs they enyoyed most and really began to know each other from front porch talks They would s1t on the steps by the hour fun t1l ohnmes watch saxd slgnmg off J and talk and talk Llttle thrngs b1g thmgs and fun ny thmgs all came to know each other very we They were so mterestmg and those front porch talks really started the romance be tween Johnme and Karen It s wonderful how close you become to a person when you know their llttle thoughts and they know yours Well Karen and johnme have been gomg together for qunte a whale now Ever smce that Fr1day night 1n May of 43 when she wanted to dance wlth hlm and he wanted to dance wxth her and they drd' Lxfe sure IS funny A certam boy and glrl meet dont care much for each other and break dates Then the two meet agam at a certam place have dates and fall gradually 1n ove And old Mr Txme goes by happily and lovmgly ln hrs own certam way A Pagafram janze s Duzry WANT TO READ OVER HER SHOULDER Dear Drary Another hectlc day gone by And what a day' Started lt as usual up at 7 A M gulped my breakfast down and rushed to school Babs had a new coat on and what a shrewd number As you can well xmagme everyone talked all day about the bowl1ng party Nan came up to me at lunch and told me about the hrgh scores she rolled lately That just cooked my goose because D1 dear rf theres one thmg I don t know about It s bowlmg Then on top of all that she mformed me that Bob was a really smooth bowler I told you last mght that Bob was takmg me remember A few days ago I could hardly walt for tonnght because lt s my first date w1th Bob and I d1d so want to make a good 1m pressron But comlng home on the bus I really began to worry Nan sat down next to me and ln less than ten minutes she had lt all fixed for us to double date Later the girls told me how she had been on the make for Bob for the longest t1me Imaglne and me bowl1ng for the first time Oh I reallv was sunk 22 By Anne DePrez, 47 Bob came at 8 10 only a few mlnutes late I wore my red sweater grey sk1rt and saddles We met Nan and Dick at the bowlmg hall but a special ball as well The evemng wore on miserably I did have fun though Bob was swell about everythmg even lf I dld ask the doplest questxons At 11 30 we called If qults and after stoppmg off at Mikes for a coke he brought me home We dropped lNan and Dxck off first and then almost too soon I knew Id have to say goodbye to Bob and probably for good I reallv dldn t know what to say when we got to my front door so I tr1ed to apolog1ze for my horrlble attempt at bowl1ng Bob onlv laughed and Sald that the only way to lmprove my bowl1ng was to have someone teach me And dear Dlary he Sald that he thought he would make a good teacher Ive got a date with him for next Frlday nxght Well now to bed It certarnly has been a merry dav' . , . , . . , , , . . . F LIRTATION AT FOUR MARY ELLEN AU 46 ONLY A FRESHMAN oAN NEUBFRT 46 24 Every time I pass that beautiful entrance I feel hke prmtmg a sign over the door to warn other unsuspectlng vxctxms It would probably read Sullnvan s Frrst Mlstake or Let s Take the Long Wav Home 000- ormn has often told me of an 1nc1dent ln my childhood that I of course do not recall I was four at the tune and requxred careful watchmg twentv four hours a day Th1S partlcular after noon w e had gone shoppmg together and were on our way home on the trolley Mother bemg so loaded down w1th packages dxdn t have a clear view of her httle problem chlld on the left Before we had progressed three blocks the whole car was filled w 1th amused utters whlch mcreased noticeably every mmute un txl Mother became embarrassed and apprehenslve lest she be the cause of thelr amusement Fmally one woman sensxng her discomfort leaned over and remarked that they were laughmg at the llttle glrl Horrrhed be cause she was expectmg almost anything she leaned over only to see me slttmg very lady llke at her slde But on closer scrutxnx she dlscovered that the conductor had taught me to wmk and every txme he wmked at me I wmked back at hlm Mother poor woman had a dlfficult t1me that evemng explam 1ng to me just w hat was wrong about so apparently lnnocent a gentle art of bemg a lady 0 Q 0 RE121x as the grass I tlptoed 1nto class makmg sure of the number first and took a back seat The others came rn some wlth laughter and assuredness ln their step others wrth fnght and hes1 tancy IH therrs Someone begged my pardon and asked if she mlght sxt w1th me as there w eren t enough seats m the room She 1ntroduced her self and sa1d that she was a semor Then came the quest1on that w as to make me sooo small' What class are you rn? I sweetlx answered Why I am a jumor What was thxs I had sard A jumor why I was only a FRESH MAIN' Grace sweet person that she was and 15 just laughed and made me feel at ease She IS one person that can always put you at Vour ease To grve vou a Uhmpse of how wonderful she IS she was crowned May Queen IH that Vear of 1943 To those who know or knew her I need not relate tlus story as they already can bear wxtness to her character 7 .
