About the Author Youve met Marilyn before the footlxgbts youve heard ber :mg youve :een ber dance now en1oy ber pen ,4 Eerfam jlflcefmg A CERTAIN LOVE By Marzlyn McCarthy 45 HEY had an awful trme gettmg together breakmg dates and argumg a l1ttle with each other But one Frxday nxght Karen was at the Y to a dance when johnme walked 1n H was w1th h1s close frlcnd Bob Bauer She thought johnme looked so darlmg wxth h1s statron wagon coat on trousers rolled a couple lnches showmg h1s whxte wooly socks and black and WhlfC saddle shoes She re membered the krds saylng how he never went anV place wlthout that p1pe of h1s and sure enough there xt was restrng 1n the corner of h1s mouth w1th h1s hand enclosed on the bowl That handsome manmsh look you know Karen watched johnme as he walked up to the band and started talkmg wrth the fellas that were already grouped around It She saw h1m turn and look at her and she qulcklv started talking and laughlng wlth her forgot ten date Dave Bently Karen loved to dance and johnnle loved to watch her She tr1ed to pay attentlon to Dave but suddenly reahzed she was hopmg for the first txme that johnme would come over and dance w1th her He was voted the best dancer at school and that was somethlng But Karen Just wanted to see h1m and kmda talk to hlm that was the real reason They had such s1lly mlsunderstand lngs Then before she knew what was happening Dave strolled awav and there she was looklng up 1nto johnnle s eyes w1th h1m smxhng down at her She thought he had such a cute boy rsh smlle The song she could hear was I Remember You When they danced to a fast number she had to laugh at the curly strands of halr that kept the beat of the rhvthm of hxs forehead Well poor old Dave was left out ln the cold If seemed Johnme kept cuttxng all the txme and Karen wanted h1m to It was near the end of the dance when Johnme sald Karen go to the Sprlng Concert wlth me next Frxday n1ght at the school and the fol lowmg Frrday to Inter Fratermty here at the Y She saxd Oh that would be n1ce johnnre Somethlng 1n h1s eyes seemed all atwxnkhng He put h1s chan on her forehead and she not1ced how comfortable her head fit there H15 statxon wagon must have just been washed because xt smelled all soapy and clean Karen walked down the steps of the Y and she happxly breathed m the fresh warm n1ght axr She glanced up at old Mr Moon h seemed to be flashmg Thxs IS just the begin nmg Karen She walked home and m the mxdst of thelr talk1ng a convert came flpplflg' down Thlstle Road blowmg the musrcal horn for all its worth They not1ced xt was a group of the gang from school and Karen saw a whxte coat sleeve wavmg and a smxhng face w1th a p1pe stuck 1n the corner of ICS mouth She smxled 1ns1de and felt all cozy and warm johnme came over every n1ght 1n h1s Dad s Packard and they rode all over The balmy breezes of May floated 1n the open wmdows and the swaymg trees castmg dancmg figures every place seemed to complete Karens and johnme s happmess On May fourteenth they attended the Sprmg Concert and then afterwards rode out to a l1ttle hot dog stand for a snack They had everv band that was on the alr that Friday n1ght Not caring to talk yust content to rlde hsten to the soft muslc and breathe m the fresh n1ght alr 21 I , I . Twmkle Toes are happy to know that the1r project was a success And now I thmk lt s time the sand man came or you won t be able to play tomorrow We ve got a bxg day ahead of us weve got to meet your two benefac tors So the sand man d1d come and the two play mates finally d1d drop off to sleep whlle v1s 1ons of sugar plums danced 1n thelr heads The next day Janie Sue d1d meet the elves and the fa11'1CS and oh such fun she had For hours on end she laughed and romped wxth the fames and elves and believe If or not they had just as much fun playmg wlth the best est llttle g1rl as she d1d w1th them Dew Drop and Twmkle Toes saw that whatever she wanted was granted because they wanted this good httle g1rl to be yust as happy as any elght year old l1ttle g1rl can be Every day for a whole week JSHIC Sue and her loyal Bunny kept their rendevous ln the glen by the brook near the hollow oak w1th Dew Drop and her fames and Twmkle Toes and h1s elves Even after the games and fun were over at the brook Janxe Sue st1ll had Bunny to talk to and play wlth Yes everythmg was just per ect But then one day a very serlous thmg hap pened Janle Sue dlsobeyed Mommy Yes she even stamped her foot sald no and ran out of the house Oh shame on jame Sue She grabbed Bunny and started off toward the glen heedless of the fact that as soon as she had sald no a dark cloud had rolled over the sun By the tlme she reached the glen xt was very very dark The brook seemed to be rushmg angr1ly past her not at all l1ke the laughmg brook she had had such fun play1ng near And another thmg call as she may Dew Drop or Twmkle Toes dldnt answer And even her own dear Bunny Wouldn t speak to her She shook h1m and shook but no response Suddenlv great ram drops began to fall And the faster Janne Sue ran the harder the ram 20 fell Clutchmg the mute Bunnv she practxcally flew through the woods but the faster she ran, the more branches seemed to be pullmg her back and catchmg her clothes The stones along the path dug mto her feet and sharp twlgs scratched her legs Oh what had she done? Were those frightful figures the wood W1tChCS whlch Dew Drop and Twmkle Toes had warned her about or were they lust the shadows m the ram? Suddenly .lame Sue be came panic strlcken Oh how fr1ghtened she was' She tr1ed to run faster but her feet just wouldn t obey Suddenly she trlpped and fell Just as a startlmg flash of llghtnlng streaked grotesquely across the sky Now thoroughly fr1ghtened Janne Sue be gan to cry She sobbed and sobbed Oh how sorry she was Never agam would she dlsobev Mommy Just as she thought her heart would break from sorrow and that she would die of frlght she heard a fam1l1ar voxce one she hadnt heard for a long t1me It was Bunny Yes loyal Bunny hadn t deserted her Are you really sorry Jame Sue? answered jame Sue between sobs Well then I guess we can forgxve you thls txme concluded Bunny But lf lt ever hap pens agam Oh xt won t It vson t assured Janle Sue I promlse All rlght I guess Ill stav But now the storm s over and I thmk we d better get home before Mommle starts supper On the way home the sun came out and jame Sue just couldn t get home fast enough to tell Mommle how very sorry she was That nxght after Mommle had lov1nglV tucked ,lame Sue and her reconciled playmate m bed and turned out the llght Bunnv told Janle Sue that as long as she stayed good the goodness and the happmess of the elves and the fames were hers and because she was s ery sorrv she was stlll the bestest glrl ' 1 . . . , 1 1 . , . 1 ' - . . , . 1 77 - . . , . . In the mxdst of dances partxes r1d1ng and plcmcs they enyoyed most and really began to know each other from front porch talks They would s1t on the steps by the hour fun t1l ohnmes watch saxd slgnmg off J and talk and talk Llttle thrngs b1g thmgs and fun ny thmgs all came to know each other very we They were so mterestmg and those front porch talks really started the romance be tween Johnme and Karen It s wonderful how close you become to a person when you know their llttle thoughts and they know yours Well Karen and johnme have been gomg together for qunte a whale now Ever smce that Fr1day night 1n May of 43 when she wanted to dance wlth hlm and he wanted to dance wxth her and they drd' Lxfe sure IS funny A certam boy and glrl meet dont care much for each other and break dates Then the two meet agam at a certam place have dates and fall gradually 1n ove And old Mr Txme goes by happily and lovmgly ln hrs own certam way A Pagafram janze s Duzry WANT TO READ OVER HER SHOULDER Dear Drary Another hectlc day gone by And what a day' Started lt as usual up at 7 A M gulped my breakfast down and rushed to school Babs had a new coat on and what a shrewd number As you can well xmagme everyone talked all day about the bowl1ng party Nan came up to me at lunch and told me about the hrgh scores she rolled lately That just cooked my goose because D1 dear rf theres one thmg I don t know about It s bowlmg Then on top of all that she mformed me that Bob was a really smooth bowler I told you last mght that Bob was takmg me remember A few days ago I could hardly walt for tonnght because lt s my first date w1th Bob and I d1d so want to make a good 1m pressron But comlng home on the bus I really began to worry Nan sat down next to me and ln less than ten minutes she had lt all fixed for us to double date Later the girls told me how she had been on the make for Bob for the longest t1me Imaglne and me bowl1ng for the first time Oh I reallv was sunk 22 By Anne DePrez, 47 Bob came at 8 10 only a few mlnutes late I wore my red sweater grey sk1rt and saddles We met Nan and Dick at the bowlmg hall but a special ball as well The evemng wore on miserably I did have fun though Bob was swell about everythmg even lf I dld ask the doplest questxons At 11 30 we called If qults and after stoppmg off at Mikes for a coke he brought me home We dropped lNan and Dxck off first and then almost too soon I knew Id have to say goodbye to Bob and probably for good I reallv dldn t know what to say when we got to my front door so I tr1ed to apolog1ze for my horrlble attempt at bowl1ng Bob onlv laughed and Sald that the only way to lmprove my bowl1ng was to have someone teach me And dear Dlary he Sald that he thought he would make a good teacher Ive got a date with him for next Frlday nxght Well now to bed It certarnly has been a merry dav' . , . , . . , , , . . .
