F YOUR aim in life is to make people happy and to give them a taste of the better things the career of a soda perker should hold some appeal for you Do you know of any person who can give so much sweetness to so many people at one time? Well hardly' It all began on a beautiful spring day in the year of our Lord 1943 Mother and I were en giged in a heated debate about the necessity of a new spring coat for the Easter Parade Since I was fast losing the argument I tried desperately to think of some scathing remark that would even the score Well if I had a job I wouldnt have to ask you for anything I said fiercely Then I could buy as many spring coats as I wanted Why dont you find a job then? asked Nfother smiling slyly To my chagrin she really meant it That settled the matter I would find a Job or know the reason why And so it came about that I was employed rn the respectable establishment of Ryan Drug House 'J wage of forty cents per hour Before working at Ryan s I had always envied the life of a soda jerk I could imagine myself hippxly eating my merry little way through a maze of chocolate marshmallow sundaes with smrls of whipped cream floating about my head and mara schino cherries slapping me in the face But oh how that impression was changed' Have you ever trred making a banana split for the first time? N09 Well Ill tell you of my first evrperience with this ethereal concoction First I grabbed the banana in one hand and the knife in the other Then I tried gently to coax the banana peel away from its keeper Evidently the banana peel did not wish to be coaxed so I pulled hard Could I help it if the banana broke in half? By this time the fruit was slightly squashy but other wise in good condition I then contemplated split ting the banana lengthwise but considered it a job well done when it lay in the bottom of the dish in ten little pieces Now was the time to put rn the three scoops of xce cream chocolate vanilla and strawberry fdur mg the process of vwhnch I accrdentally caught my finger in the scooperj The syrup was poured on top of the ice creim and then came the crowning glory the whipped cream Oh bllss' It so happens that there is a little knack of press ing down the trigger that releases the whipped cream from the can This knack I had not as yet acquired After wiping whipped cream off the top Qa- up 9? S?
