K1tty s Angel A second grader flnds her Gl:RRY DENTINGER 14 ITTY was a cuddly youngster of seyen Her imprsh eyes of blue were eternally searching for something mischrevous Strawberry dyed curls smothered her head and picture framed her laughing face A severe attack of pneumonia when she was a baby left her as delicate and t1ny as a lone crocus on a chilly spring a You couldn t help but notice the little china doll figure as she lightly trrpped her way down the elm sh xded lane toward St Rrtas School She felt Oh so big now Moms had agreed to let her go to school alone today She was in the second grade now or would be 1n a few minutes as she qurckened her step and swung into the school yard with that fr sh first day of school feeling skip ping through her t1ny vems Once inside the huge granite structure Kitty met up with her last years classmates Together the t1ny comrades made their way to the room with the number two on rts door and trrumphantly made their entrance A few seconds later Sister Mary Grace principal of the school entered the class room and was greeted by a chorus of God bless you good morning Sister Children this is Sister Mary Cephas who will be your teacher this coming year Sister Grace nodded to a stately figure who had glided into the room and had just become visible to her wide eyed class She looks like an angel exclaimed Kitty in her sincere childish voice overshadowed by the sudden dm of remarks that were popping from the lrps of awed second graders as Sister Mary Cephas began the first day of school with I want to be your friend as well as your teacher And so began the second year of school It was to be a happy year Kitty thought Through her child s world flowed an unending stream of sun shlne and a pink mist of happiness cloaked the little gurl who had found her Gu rdnan Angel in the habit of her second grade teacher The Angel Cephas was Kitty s prryate name for her Her gen tle manner and smiling voice her understanding eyes and guiding hands were just what this frail little flovser crayed She and Kitty became close friends Kitty shared all her childrsh joys with her and sometimes put her little misfortunes on the Angel s knee to be patched up and vxaved into shape again Come what may she was alvy ays there to listen and understand and Kitty loycd her for It Those rmpxsh eyes were a little less blue the rosy glow rn those appled cheeks vs as a little pilcr and that laughing face was 1 dim smile forcing rts w iy through vu hen Kitty mustered enough strength to return to school in May after a month at home too frail to ward off the germ and had again fallen into its clutches Kitty was to make her First Holy Communion in May It took all the extra instructing Sister Cephas could give her to prepare the little soul for that precious day It came finally It was a deyout little whrte veiled crocus that took her place at the Communion rail that glorious morning Her head bent untrl her chin all but touched her pew as she made her humble thanksgiving All that day there was much evcrtement at Kit ty s house Her relatives had gathered to help her celebrate the coming of her Divine Guest It was mght now and Moms had ushered her up to bed She was frlghtfully tired but not too tired to kneel beside her child sized bed and say Good night to her Infant Savior Thank you Lord she began and after that came Im sorry Lord for all her baby faults Then came the act of Contrxtlon she had been taught in school three 47 fx, - , f. . . 4 ,- 3 ' V ' gl l A I - . . . 7 . 5 7 Y V A A d Y. . . . . . Hail Marys and a very special little prayer which had some of her own words injected Now I lay me down to sleep it began and ended with If I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take to my Angel who I know will some day wait for me in heaven Crawling into bed and pulling the fresh white sheets up to her own sheet white face Kitty felt so relaxed and secure The lamp on her dresser was out but there was still light in the room which like a shining sword pierced the black cloak of night It was a heavenly feeling as she drifted to sleep a sleep that was different The scent of hyacinths seemed to perfume the air and the stars outside suddenly became rare gems set rn the downy wings of angels lxrtty was floating through space as her wide eyes searched the sky Sooner than she real ized she was standing alone She peered expectant ly into the new world before her yes it was true There within those radiant gates with all the saints and angels in heaven there stood the Angel Cephas beckoning to Kutty A Story with .rufpnre ending N Lingermg Memories c. EILEEN CADOGAN 46 OU sit in the gathering dusk unable to decide whether to get up and light the lamp thus banishing your lingering thoughts of the sunset or to sit in the gloom un aware of the deepening shadows until it becomes so dark that you are unable to distinguish the familiar objects about you and trip over the furni ture as you grope clumsily for a match Haunting memories clutch your senses and you feel unable to move Dusk always brings back memories you find yourself saying Memories like those first years at school the day Dad lost his job and you came back from boarding school to go to Central High your first date the Senior Prom and then Commencement Sis borrowing your clothes Bud teasing you at the breakfast table Dad reading his Sunday paper on the front porch and Mom singing in the evenings your flowers growing in that grubby plot you called your own the summers at the seashore winter holidays spent skiing in the mountains all tingle your blood and bring a smile to your face the day Dad took you out to the new school on the edge of town and told you that it would be your Alma Mater You looked at the new buildings smelling of fresh paint cement and varnish and smiled It sure looked swell Our Lady of Lourdes College The years you spent there the tears you shed on Class Day were behind you and the world was before you But you still heard the echoes of your school life singing My Country Tis of Thee in the grades cheering at Central High s football games singing rn the Church choir praying in the college chapel for a deceased classmate They rang in your ears pounded your brain Your steps faltered Would you be able to go into the battle and grief and strife of the world? Then a voice came to you echoing above all the others Come follow Me Come it said and unhesitantly you followed meek and humble of heart You turned your back upon the greed of the world and labored lovingly for the priceless treasure that was for the faithful everlasting happiness You are awakened from your reveries by the tinkle of the chapel bell The days work is o er It is the hour of Benediction for the faithful at the bombed mission God is with them even in the hour of peril The hardships of the past years are forgotten as you watch these humble people gather in the small chapel Where?
