It has been a week and a half srnce George Bud for short has flashed that Pepsodent smrle rn my drrectron Up untrl now I thought he had for gotten the grrl rn the first seat thrrd row But joan Flaherty just slrpped me a note and whrspered Its from Bud Its rom Bud those words dash madly through my head echorng and reechorng Unconscrously I tear open the note tryrng to hrde my anxrety knowmg that hrs eyes must be focused rn my drrectron It reads Dear une rf you can be spared for a few mrnutes after school would you lrke to stop off at Marys Sweet Shoppe for a sundae7 Bud Yes I drd go to Marys wrth Bud that after noon that afternoon and many others lagged by rn that same srde booth eatrng prnetpple sundaes and once rn a whrle glancrng sheeprshly through the corners of our eyes at each other And Ill nexer forget the first trme he held my hand rt was the last week rn june and both of us had an urge for a long hrke rn the glen The ground was soft lrke marshmallows We had just crossed a stream berng partrcular on whrch rocks we stepped I felt as free as the trger lrlres bobbrng therr yellow heads along the banks of the hrll As hrs hard smooth hand slrd rnto mrne chrlls ran around my heart grvrng me that warm feelrng rnsrde une he whrspered your harr looks almost red rn the sun I can remember other days rn that summer of dreams that stood out vrxrdly rn my mrnd such as the afternoon he crawled out on the branch of a cherry tree lust to srng a sentrmental lrttle song that he had practrsed for weeks when all of a sud den the branch weakened under hrs one hundred and fifty srac pounds abruptly puttrng an end to hrs romance wrth a thud The sun rs now seeprng lower rn the west search mg for new lands and more people lust lrke you and me who lay awake nrghts wartrng for rts wel comrng smrle to cos er the land each mornrng send rng warm trnglrng feelrngs through us The odor of steak and french frred potatoes coupled wrth mother s call for supper rudely tears me away from those fond school day memorres to the realrzatron of the present Lrfe rs not so short but that there rs trme for remrnrscrng 43 0 I I I I 7 a a u n 5 y ...
