HAT a Sunday, you moan, listlessly wiping the perspiration from your face with another Kleenex from the box you have been carrying around with you. Mom, want me to do anything? you whisper up the stairs hoping the answer ll be no if that lady hears you at all And from the coolness of her room Mom s voice drifts down No dear not right now O K QAh'j You wander into the kitchen and glance at the clock just two Dad has switched the radio dial and the mellow voice of oseph Cotten on Ceiling Unlimited drifts into the roorn but even that does not cool you off In fact and you blush to admit it it raises your temperature a few degrees your nose straight against the screen door. Two flies are doing the same thing. A car door slams and Mr. Heptner, two doors down, calls out Say, Ma, did you put in the dill pickles? You can hear Mrs. Willis wailing 'Oh XVillie what did Mother tell you about getting your suit dirty' Shame on you' And Hector and Her bert Mundoon your next door pests become objects of your concern as they bounce around a badminton net You expect either one of them to keel over with sun stroke any minute Boy are they tan' you sigh Tan? Tan' Thats it' ust what you need Your mind s made up What would do you more good than a nice restful sunbath? X ou begin to dash to your room but remember ing something you read once in a book you glide Q A ball of yi e a girl Herlov and Herberz Pardon ur B1rd1e' EJPECZHZQ1 on az Sulrry Day ELAINE KOLESNIK 44 XVhy do August Sundays have to be so stickily hot you wonder not caring whether stickily is a word or not For it is one of those muggy days as the bee that almost stung you You wander about not knowing what to do with yourself If you sit down you stick to the oilcloth kitchen chair pads if you walk around you get hotter I m yust a molten mass of flesh and bones you Wal In desperation you yell Hey Mom uba can o Oh I dont know dear Why dont you go to a show or something? Go to a show' just the thought of it makes you think of being shut up in a vacuum and you sit down weak Restless you saunter to the back porch and press up QAccording to the eminent author of the book gliding in hot weather is a very wise procedure as the smooth motion does not entice the heat which Haxmg reached the head of the stairs you de cide that gliding is an art in itself especially if you re doing it to the tune of I Got Rhythm as played by the Ceiling Unlimited orchestra Mom where s my halter? You know the red one' I m gonna take a sunbath Why dear I dont know I think its in the clothes closet rn moth balls though it may be down in the cabinet with the bathing suits or maybe you put it away in one of your drawers Now let me think But you are already in your stove like fin other words hotj clothes closet pulling out drawers looking beneath dresses and even scanning the floor for your halter 9 S 1 Y 3 1 . .. an , s I l I 1 H s a 1 ' 1 l r 7 ,, . . , . . . , . - s x 9 ' ' 1 r . . .
