Through its skill, spirit, and determination, this year's Blue and Gold haskethall team, coached for the last time hy Mr. Russell W. Davis, 'and captained hy J. Hanson Ridall, won eleven of its scheduled fourteen games. The cagers dropped the opener to Class A finalist Ava' lon, 18f34, hut heat Edgewood 29324, and Har Brack 37f33 in succeeding contests. After suffering a defeat at the hands of superior Bellevue, the Indians proceeded to win six straight encountersg namely, Shaler, 44f36, Hampton, 4lf16, a return match with Har Brack 29f27, Etna, 35-28, and Springdale, 46f36. Avonworth, a team which later defeated Avalon, fell to the Indians, 42937. ln all these contests, the ahle defense of Beeken, Braun, and Armstrong, was evident. Paced hy CofCaptains Randy Coldshorough and Kennedy Ray, the Blue and Cold soccerites went through an undefeated season with three wins and one tie. The hooters, coached for the first time hy Mr. Mead, showed plenty of fight and spirit in every game. . . . .Co-Captain . . . .CofCaptain . . . .Manager ...........................Coach The Indians on Octoher 12 inaugurated the 1943 season with a tie game with Connelly Vocaf tional School. Goldsborough tallied the lone point for the Locals in the first quarter. On a muddy field the Indians gained their first victory against Washington Vocational School on Cctoher 19. Coldshorough started the scoring spree, and Jack Dwyer accounted for the other three goals. The score stood 4 to 2 at the final whistle. The Blue and Gold hooters came hack with a hang to win in a return match with Connelly Vocational Cctoher 28 with a Zfl score. Tom Frank and Dwyer figured into the scoring. In the final contest with Washington Voca- tional Novemher 2, the Indians pounded the visif tors to a tune of 4f2. VARSITY WRESTLING SAMUEL M. HASZELEART, JR. ............................... ..... C aptam j. STOKES ADAMS ........... MR, THEODORE H. RUPP ............ Under the skillful coaching of Mr. Theodore H. Rupp, the Shady Side grapplers, captained by Sam Haszelbart, fought through a fairly good season with one tie, four losses, and two victories. Handicapped by green material, the wrestling squad showed fightg and, under Coach Rupp's inf struction, advanced rapidly throughout the win' ter term. In the return ....Manage1 ..........................Coacl1 The Indian matmen opened their season on January 18 against Dormont. In a hardffought battle our boys lost the heartfbreaker 8f7. Cn january 21 the grapplers moved to West View to lose again in another closeffought match 6f4. Millvale High trounced the Shady Siders 11f3 on January 25, Captain Haszelbart and Roger Wiewel gaining the only wins. match with Millvzxle High on February 15, our wrestlers won their iirst victory 1Of5. Pete Bolanis, Sam Haszelbart, George Crawf McDermott. ford, Roger Wiewel, and Jim Jackson all gained wins, while Joel Rosen' bloom won a default. The second match with West View on February 18 resulted in a tie Sfi. On February 25 the Blue and Gold matmen lost to a strong Dormont team 6f5. In the final interfschool match of the season our grapplers soared to a 15f2 victory over Mars High on February 29. Captain Haszelbart, Bolaf nis, and Rodewald furnished exciting wins on our gym floor. On March 4 a small Shady Side team gained a fourth place in the Lehigh Academy and Preparatory School Championships. A three'man team consisting of Captain Sam Haszelbart, Roger Wiewel, and Jim Jackson, went with Coach Rupp to Lehigh. Haszelbart and Wiewel reached the Hnalsg Haszelbart and Jackson returned with silver medals for second place, while Wiewel gained a bronze medal for third place.
