The hooters, coached for the first time hy Mr. Mead, showed plenty of fight and spirit in every game. . . . .Co-Captain . . . .CofCaptain . . . .Manager ...........................Coach The Indians on Octoher 12 inaugurated the 1943 season with a tie game with Connelly Vocaf tional School. Goldsborough tallied the lone point for the Locals in the first quarter. On a muddy field the Indians gained their first victory against Washington Vocational School on Cctoher 19. Coldshorough started the scoring spree, and Jack Dwyer accounted for the other three goals. The score stood 4 to 2 at the final whistle. The Blue and Gold hooters came hack with a hang to win in a return match with Connelly Vocational Cctoher 28 with a Zfl score. Tom Frank and Dwyer figured into the scoring. In the final contest with Washington Voca- tional Novemher 2, the Indians pounded the visif tors to a tune of 4f2. On a soft, rainfsoaked field, October 15, the Blue and Gold easily defeated South High School. The gridmen tallied two touchdowns in the first quarter on a run of 60 yards by Hugh Lynch and a 64 yard run by Bruce Glick. Shortly after the start of the second quarter, Taylor Marshall ran 5 4 yards for the final touchdown. S.S.A.: 20-South: O. On October 21, the Shady Side gridmen travf eled to Shaler for the second night game in the school's history. The game was hard fought and beautfiully played throughout and Shaler held a six point lead at the half. Shaler scored again in the third quarter after a pass interception, and Shady Side's only score followed on a pass to Clyde Armstrong from Ted Leaman. S.S.A.: 7-Shaler: 12. The Shady Side gridmen, playing outstanding football, turned back a strong Norwin High ag' gregation on October 28. After a dubious first half, the Indians came back on the field to score on the third play of the second half. Taylor Mar' shall went for thirty yards on the Hrst play, Ted Leaman duplicated, and then smashed the ref maining one yard for the only tally. The Bluef and Gold kept the lead by the outstanding play of the hard charging linemen, and long punts by Marshall and Leaman. S.S.A.: 7-Norwin: O. In the only league contest of the season, the gridmen bowed to University School in a very close and hard fought game. After the visitors had scored, Bill Danforth threw a spectacular pass to Clyde Armstrong who was stopped on the 14. Marshall carried to the 8, and Danforth threw to Hank Ridall for the first Indian score. Al' though trailing at half time 13f6, the gridmen fought downfield with good blocking and hard runs by Marshall, Leaman, and Lynch. From the seven, Bruce Glick carried the ball over for the second Shady Side score. The Indians dominated the play for the rest of the game until Julien of U. S. intercepted a pass and ran for a touchdown in the final moments of the game. S.S.A.: 12-University School: 19. Lettermen: Marshall, Captain, P. Through its skill, spirit, and determination, this year's Blue and Gold haskethall team, coached for the last time hy Mr. Russell W. Davis, 'and captained hy J. Hanson Ridall, won eleven of its scheduled fourteen games. The cagers dropped the opener to Class A finalist Ava' lon, 18f34, hut heat Edgewood 29324, and Har Brack 37f33 in succeeding contests. After suffering a defeat at the hands of superior Bellevue, the Indians proceeded to win six straight encountersg namely, Shaler, 44f36, Hampton, 4lf16, a return match with Har Brack 29f27, Etna, 35-28, and Springdale, 46f36. Avonworth, a team which later defeated Avalon, fell to the Indians, 42937. ln all these contests, the ahle defense of Beeken, Braun, and Armstrong, was evident.
