E This year, more so than in others, the 1944 Academian has more significance, for already six of our Alumni who once roamed the halls of Shady Side have given their lives for their country. Their sacrifice and unselfish devotion to duty should be an inspiraf tion to those who now learn at the same desks once occupied by these men. Now, more than ever your loyalty must be pledged to the building up of sound school traditions, so that future genera' tions will be proud to call Shady Side Academy their Alma Mater. The class of january, 1944 is now scattered in various branches of the armed forces. God grant that soon peace will be restored to the land, so that boys throughout the nation can once more plan ahead, not to enter an army or navy, but to lead a normal happy life. E FACULTY Gorzienfs SIXTH FORM UN DERGRADUATES HOUSES FEATURES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS JUNIOR SCHOOL ADVERTISING e icafimz In reiicrcizee and deep syrnpailty, Vvlc tlze Class of 1944 respeetfitlly tleditute Volume XXXII of tlzc ACADEMIAN to the late ALFRED CLARE DICKEY During the llortyfeight years Mr, Dickey was aililiated with Shady Side Aeademy, no one will ever forget his ready friendliness, his unf usually genial goodfhumor, his interest in activities of various kinds, and his eontagious :est for life. Those of his students will never forget the enthusiasm whieh he generated so spontaneouslyg those of the alumni will never forget the hearty handelasp which aeeompanied the unlailing ahility to reeall the name ol' them. Truly his passing has created a void neither time nor change can remove. CLEMENT MORRIS MORTON As a member of the Class of 1944, Clement Morton displayed a devotion to his school which took the form of service performed on innumerable occasions and in varied capacif ties. To Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Morton the ACADEMIAN extends for the school and his classmates a belated, but no less profound ex' pression of sympathy. MR. DON R. CONNER He was a man of truly remarkable qualities, most of which one grew to appreciate only after intimate association with him. His un' failing devotion to the school, his rugged hon' esty and courage with which he could face a disagreeable situation, his painstaking thorf oughness of his work, and over and beyond all this, his lovable sidefbrave, sympathetic, kindly, and hospitableeshall truly be rememf bered. gl-acuffy Rwmzulz B. Phillip Poliner Spiegelman Peter Harteh Strachan Wzilter Douglas Toole john Hume Voigt Thomas Childs Vxfoolfolk THE UNDERGRADUATES Although the members of the Sixth Form make up the greater part of the athletic teams and participate more fully in the various clubs and organizations on the campus, the undergraduates, through their interest, cooperation, and support, aid the Seniors in almost all their school activities. Even though the underformers .constitute only a minor part of the campus groups, it is from this minority that the future leaders of Shady Side will be chosen. From the foregoing statement it might seem that only the older boys take part in the school activities, The younger boys who make up the non-varsity teams are being trained for future positions on the varsity. By their wholefhearted support and admiration, these underformers build the morale of the varsity teams to the high point where it always is and maintain this morale throughout the year. The underformers' activities, however, are not limited to athletics. The Musical Clubs, The Chapel Orchestra, and The A Cappella Glee Club, are open to everyone. As is the custom on Commencement Eve, the Junior Class sponsors a dance for the graduating class. The chairmen of this year's committee are Hugh McKenna Lynch, Theodore Rohrer Leaman, Jr., Thomas William Frank, and Roger North Wiewel. This year, more than ever before, the underformers are participating more fully in the student government. The Student Council has been enlarged to include representaf tives from the Third and Fourth Forms. Hugh McKenna Lynch, Theodore Rohrer Leaf rnan, Jr., and James Pettigrew Waddell from the Fifth Form, Donald DeWitt Rait, jr., and James Ellis Robertson from the Fourth Form, and William Morrow Patterson, jr., from the Third Form are the undergraduate members of this year's council. We, the graduating class, leave Shady Side with a deep appreciation for the whole' hearted support of the undergraduates and with firm belief, strong trust, and great faith that those boys who follow will keep, as we have endeavored to keep, the name and traditions of Shady Side honorable and outstanding. Paul Drew Neuenschwander EXCERPTS FROM JUST RAMBLINGH Everyone seems to be excited about his for is it thei-rj vacation, and it appears that many had a good time. john Lohstoeter was telling me that he spent his entire summer practicing for the flyfcasting tournament which he won recently. I've been getting in trim hy casting for the stopper in the bathtub. I keep cool and save energy, says john. There are no flies on me. Super salesman Ed Sipe put over a big deal when he finally sold his twcvhorsepower buggy to Tuna Fish Wiewel. Anyone interested in buying a two pole generated auto, just has to see Happy Ed , the man who buys and sells Vf8's in twenty hours. The spirits of lovable George Follansbee were scarcely dampened when his ready- tied bow cravat came apart, leaving nothing but a few miscellaneous bits of black ribbon. At the one and only big dance of the year, the most popular boy was undoubtedly Don Hunt, who rated two corsagesg Bill Cosgrove thought it most expedient to come stag after having previously invited two girls to accompany him to the soiree. Clyde Armstrong threw a big shindig, where Win or Lose Adams received several large empty boxes for presents. john Lohstoeter won a green and purple plaid tuxedo, and Eddie Rieck painted his tennis shoes black and came formal. The reasons for Eddie Sipe's sudden passionate interest in the Webste1 s Unabridged Dictionary are far from literary. The desire is not for culture but rather to find out just what the long words in a letter from a certain Ujetme filleu really mean. Hope you're not in for a rude awakening, Ed, cause these women from Chatham Hall are smart. Feldstein: I'm all dressed up today. Don't I look sharp? Heriot: Yes, but who wears your clean shirts? Lately Bill Cosgrove has been seen slinking furtively about the campus, his head in tonsorial disarray. It seems that the Blue and Gold gridder was surprised the other night by a group of fellow Ellsworthites who disturbed his slumber with a pair of shears. Although this circumstance may indicate it, Ellsworth is not a clip joint. The Christmas holidays showed up many characters. Individualist Marshall fared considerably better with a visiting Southern girl than with these here Northern women. jack Ballantyne did all right with a young fills from Dunmoyle Street. We had a pleasant conversation about our old buddies and decided to pay a visit to each illustrious member of the Class of 1944. We hadn't gone far when a sign - The Green Visor -hanging from a second floor tenement house on the East Side drew our attention. As we were about to enter, BILL COSGROVE, dressed in the navy blue of a policeman, appeared on the scene. Bill who always wanted to be a Gfman, told us that the 'LGreen Visor was a gaming house, owned and operated by HANK RIDALL and GEORGE FOLLANSBEE with BOB DUGGAN as the acting bouncer of all riotious customers. Cosey also told us about a big trial down at the court house where the Honorable- JAMES MURRAY EGAN was judging the case of TEE'HEE SIPE vs. the peaceful citizen LOU GREU' LICH, who was pressing charges of reckless driving on the part of Ed. CLYDE ARMSTRONG was the criminal lawyer in the trial. We happened to pass the Ida Mae MANSMANN'S store, the best for second hand goods. Jack told us all about SAM GILMORE and DAVE STEELE who were both happily married, home husbands with ten kids apiece. DAVE FOX, BILL SAUERS, and JACK SIEBER tried to entice us to buy their latest in casual informal wear. BOB HOFMANN was heard arguing with a customer that his face was his fortune, and fthe customerj should come to his fHofrnann'sJ beauty saloon. Out on the street again we passed the streetfwalker, BILL BOYNE, carrying a sand' wich board, which solicited WILLIAM JONES' photo studios. It was always said that C. TAYLOR MARSHALL looked like a monkey, well, sure enough, there he was with a tin cup in his hand and a chain around his neck, dancing to the organ grind music of Foo Foo Baby , written, composed, and sung by RANDY GOLDSBOR' OUGH, who was holding Tail's chain. As we still go farther clown the street, a familiar echo came to our ears, Read the latest, just off the press-The Edis Tdahsf' yelled by the editor, FRED WILLEY, who was trying to sell his own papers. He tells us that without the help of his life long flunkies, GUS SEDER, MARTIN LIGHT, and DON MARKSTEIN, he could never have produced such a common, ordinary, everyday, true to life paper. Fred brings back memories of the old days by relating how STOKES ADAMS won the Pulitzer prize with his scientific novel, To Woo and To Win. DON WHITE also enters into pic' ture when we discover that he is on Information Please, because of his notoriety as a book reviewer. Q Your two ramblers, having discovered that dusk has fallen, ascend into one of the quieter nightclubs for a glass of ah-milk, where to our astonishment we hear GEORGE HOFFMANN beating-the drums and see the city's leading playboys-STEVE DAVIES, and KENNEDY RAY--waltz to the boogie Woogie by HERB AYRES. The next day, having traveled from New York to Pittsburgh on one of FRANK BAILEY'S Trail Blazers , we head toward Fox Chapel, however, by some misconnec- tions we find ourselves on a river, pole and flat boat, navigated by WARREN BEEKEN, on the way to that outpost community of Beaver. Beeks urged us to stay over night at the Douglas Flophousen before returning to Pittsburgh by covered wagon the next day. There at the flophouse we were rudely accepted by the proprietor BOB DOUG' LAS, the notorious Indian hunter and field plower, second in the latter only to JERRY FIN K. While in Beaver we ran across DREW NEUENSCHWANDER who was mak- tombs in TOMB'S Tomb Memorial Tomb Company. On walking down the one and only street of this burg, lo, and behold, we behold JIM XVHITE sitting on the curb, mumbling something about how wrong Brotzman was about the weather with a high going from North to South, and a low going in the other direction. Oh, well, we decide to leave this place and go back to civilization via mule team. There were two mules on this trip, both under the charge of mule skinner BOB SUSTEIN. A little boy asked Bob to give him a donkey to take home, but Bob said he couldn't do that, because the mules were counted. I It has been a hard day, so wishing some light entertainment, we went to the town's newest stage hit, Eight Downbeats and a Flat , written and directed by COOPER BAILEY. JACK BECKER was starring as THE FLAT and BILL FUREY as one of the NDOWNBEATSM, a dead one. The show was stopped half way through the performance so that the latest news could be announced. JIM CRAIG, an up and com- ing college graduate from HUBBARD University, where he received his B.S. degree, defeated the country's leading radical, BILL BLASDELL, for the Democratic nomina- tion for the presidency. As we walked out of the theater, what didn't confront us but the AZEN and WOLK, Ltd. wholesale and retail furriers, where we saw the JACOB boys ARCH and BILL running around inside, making sure the books were in good order. JACK MURRAY was seen pasting advertisements to a bill board. Not wishing to waste any more time, we hailed the nearest cab, a Ford 7f8 of 1932 vintage, which was driven by cabbie BILL BIRMINGHAM, whom we told to get us out to our old Alma Mater tout de suite . It was a hilarious ride, taking a little over two hours. At Shady Side we found WALTER BLENKO still telling the old teachers how in his point of view!---J. On a huge plaque snuggled away somewhere in the gym, RAY WEFING'S name appears for breaking the Siberian 100 yard dash in eleven seconds flat. Well you read it and wept, but that's what has become of our classmates ten years in the future. Keep an eye on these fellows, they're going somewhere? As for the authors of this masterpiece, aha, it's hard to say, but PAT NAVARRO and JACK BALLANTYNE both of EGERIAN fame are planning a good, a very good end for the 1944 ACADEMIAN. Captain Taylor Marshall scored in the first period with a fifteen yard end sweep, and the Indians were one touchdown ahead at the half. Penn came back in the second half and tallied two touchdowns. Still fighting hard and fast, the Shady Side team drove to the Penn one' half foot line, only to lose possession of the hall. S.S.A.: 7f Penn : 12.
