4 We poor neglected freshmen entered the school completely confused and seemed to spend the whole year in that state. We were pitied by the faculty, ignord by the upperclassmen, tolerated by the busdrivers, and initiated by the seniors. On the first day we were given a program card that seemed to be written in hieroglyphics, all of which meant practically nothing to us, Our educa- tion seemed to change a little, too. Up until now, we connected and Z only with the end of the alphabet. But Mercy taught us differ- ently. Plnd after a week of biology, we were convinced we were born scientists. Flnother wonder to us was the bell system. We would just get seated comfortably in class Cwhich for fresh- men is known to take at least half the periodl when bells started ringing all through the building. The teacher then tried to convince us that the period was NOT over. Of course, we were not alone in our guandary over bells, for even after four years at Mercy, one couldn't possibly know what every bell meant, except ofcourse, the one at 3:40. Hlthough we seemed to lack a con- science, any semblance of sanity, and all coordination, we were blessed with a huge pair of lungs. To us a whisper was only for a church gr a library. Ht any or all other times, we used our voice at full volume. The sign in front of the school says, . . for young ladies, and our dear Sisters certainly got the rawest of raw material with which to work. lt was hard to believe that a young lady would result from these disconnected creatures that lose themselves, and piece by piece, every- thing else that belonged to them, around school. But Mercy wouldn't be Mercy with- out the freshmen-and you know you love us! It you don't remember your marine ver- tebrates, get in touch with any fresh- men biology class,
