It was after much thought and consideration that we, the Graduating Class of 1958, chose for the theme of our year book, Prayer . . . Power . . . Progress. We had been looking for one that would embrace our four years in the Flcademy, one that would put in a nutshell the guiding principle of our achievements. We realized, thereforef that it was our union with God through prayer that gave up the impetus, guidance, and power to advance both spiritually and intellectu- ally, and to make progress toward our graduation day. Prayer - Without Me you can do nothing. There- fore, each day was begun with a prayer for direction, each action was sanctified by the offering of it to God in union with the merits of His Divine Son, and each day was ended with a prayer of thanksgiving and reparation. Power - For anyone who asks, receives . . Through this dependence upon God, we achieved power. First and most important was the power over ourslves, for we learned to control and direct our desires. Then followed the power to discover His will for our future, and daily power to overcome our own difficulties in our studies, and to solve our own problems of growing up. Progress- I can do all things in Him Who strengthens me. Possessing this power and accepting the guid- ance of our teachers, we have become intelligent, purposeful Catholic women who, through continued cooperation with God's grace, are capable of filling responsible positions in God's world. I-'ts students in Our Lady of Mercy Qcademy, we have been privileged to have Father Potterton not only for our chaplain but also tor our director and teacher. ln his first and foremost position as chaplain, Father has given us the opportunity to advance in the love of God. Each new school year has been opened with the celebration ot Holy Mass and the begging ot God's grace on the work of the coming year, Hn- nual retreats and holy hours, given under his direction, have served as fresh inspirations to greater love and devotion. Hs our teacher, Father his instilled in us a deeper comprehension ot our responsibilities to God, ourselves, home and community in which we live. Hs our director, he has endeavored to guide us as We tried to decide the paths we would follow through our future lives. During these all-important mold- ing years, his advice and influence have been ever present. We owe a great debt to Father, a debt which will be repaid only when each of us takes his teaching, lives by it and cherishes it. Hs we leave the Plcademy, then, we present this year book as the opening rather than the closing pages of our tribute to our chaplain. 41
