OUR FRIENDS ..............,,,..,,.,.,.............,....................,......................... IU I6 I8 955299 14 19 It was after much thought and consideration that we, the Graduating Class of 1958, chose for the theme of our year book, Prayer . . . Power . . . Progress. We had been looking for one that would embrace our four years in the Flcademy, one that would put in a nutshell the guiding principle of our achievements. We realized, thereforef that it was our union with God through prayer that gave up the impetus, guidance, and power to advance both spiritually and intellectu- ally, and to make progress toward our graduation day. Prayer - Without Me you can do nothing. There- fore, each day was begun with a prayer for direction, each action was sanctified by the offering of it to God in union with the merits of His Divine Son, and each day was ended with a prayer of thanksgiving and reparation. Power - For anyone who asks, receives . . Through this dependence upon God, we achieved power. First and most important was the power over ourslves, for we learned to control and direct our desires. Then followed the power to discover His will for our future, and daily power to overcome our own difficulties in our studies, and to solve our own problems of growing up. Progress- I can do all things in Him Who strengthens me. Possessing this power and accepting the guid- ance of our teachers, we have become intelligent, purposeful Catholic women who, through continued cooperation with God's grace, are capable of filling responsible positions in God's world. Ei? u fu 7fze paicuilege Ili awful TO DEDICPITE WITH DEEP FIEEECTION QND LQSTING GRHTITUDE THIS ISSUE OE THE OLMH TO OUR CI-IPIPLHIN I-'ts students in Our Lady of Mercy Qcademy, we have been privileged to have Father Potterton not only for our chaplain but also tor our director and teacher. ln his first and foremost position as chaplain, Father has given us the opportunity to advance in the love of God. Each new school year has been opened with the celebration ot Holy Mass and the begging ot God's grace on the work of the coming year, Hn- nual retreats and holy hours, given under his direction, have served as fresh inspirations to greater love and devotion. Hs our teacher, Father his instilled in us a deeper comprehension ot our responsibilities to God, ourselves, home and community in which we live. Hs our director, he has endeavored to guide us as We tried to decide the paths we would follow through our future lives. During these all-important mold- ing years, his advice and influence have been ever present. We owe a great debt to Father, a debt which will be repaid only when each of us takes his teaching, lives by it and cherishes it. Hs we leave the Plcademy, then, we present this year book as the opening rather than the closing pages of our tribute to our chaplain. 41 KA, HIS l'lOl..lNESS, POPE PIUS Xll, NOW GLORIOUSLY RElGNlNG ln his wisdom Pope Pius Xll divided the century-old Diocese ot Brooklyn into the Dioceses ol Brooklyn and Rockville Centre, This division marked over one hundred years ol progress made by the Church on Long Island lt is a progress noted not only in the increased Cath- olic population, but also in the large number ot well-organized educational and social institutions. ln order to insure the spiritual well-being ol the Cath- olic population and the spread ot Christs kingdom, His Holiness established this new Diocese ot Rockville Centre. - We Welcome as the first Bishop of Rockville Centre, the Most Reverend Walter P. Kellenberg. We pray that he Will be blessed with the health, strength and grace necessary to spread tur- ther the Faith, and that his administration will witness a tremendous growth of the Church in this newly-created diocese. His Excellency, 4OST REVEREND WQLTER P. KELLENBERG Bishop ol Rockville Centre His Excellency arrives at the Flcademy where he presided over the Graduation Exercises UV v r REVEREND EDGHR P. MCCHRREN Secretary for Education Superintendent of Schools Father McCarren distributes the diplomas to our l958 graduates. Z.. The task ot educating the Catholic children ot Rmerica is of tremendous importance, especially today when the rapid- ly changing World is in such a precarious situation, There is a grave need tor men and Women Who can lead the world back to God and peace. lt is up to the Catholic Church to train such leaders. In this new Diocese ot Rock- ville Centre, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Walter P. Kellen- berg, has wisely entrusted to Reverend Edgar P. McCarren the obligation ot educating young Catholics. Father is the first Superintendent ot Schools in Rockville Centre. We express the hope that he will be highly successful in the education of our Catholic youth, so that they may take their proper place in the world and lead men to God. I up-.... il nf SISTER MQRY EILEEN Principal of Our Lady of Mercy Plcademy Sister accepts a Spiritual Bouquet from the Ianuary graduates, ri Q ln September, l957, we extended a welcome to Sister Mary Eileen, the new principal of Our Lady of Mercy Hcademy. Then amidst much speculation we waited for all the drastic changes we expected Sister to inflict upon us. We waited in vain. Weeks passed, and changes did occur which, together with the established rules of Mercy, were so quietly and effectively enforced that our appre- hensions began to disappear. lt was apparent that Sisters wise leadership possessed the quality of justice tempered with mercy. Thus the sincere welcome given to Sister in September has been enriched with sentiments of respect, admiration and appreciation. We speak for all the students of the Hcademy when we say that we are most grateful to Sister for the example and guidance she has given us. lt is our hope that Sister will experience much happiness in successfully fulfilling her plans as principal of OLMH. amy, REVEREND DHNIEL I. M. Herrick G. Gilmartin M. Henkemeier M. Fisher Feb. - Iune P. Molloy D. True R. Conti M. Hamilton The Student Council is one of the most import- ant and respected organizations of the Head- emy. This form of self-government insures the proper interpretation and spirit of the regula- tions drawn up by the administrators of the Hcademy and the Council. The primary purpose of the Student Council is to execute the rules of the school constitution. Since it is a Working organization, it can adapt itself to the progress made by an active student body. Hn example of this ability to adapt is the new method used to elect the Councils pres- ident. Formerly chosen by the members of the Council, she is now elected by the votes of all upperclassmen. The Council aims at coordinating the wishes of the faculty with the suggestions of the stu- dents in order to bring about a maximum of efficiency. The cooperation of the student body, however, remains the prime factor in maintain- ing the standards of the school. 41 'i M, W, i Nw, v 'f .Al sg.. W.. Between the preparation for Regents and college entrance exam- inations each senior finds herself working doubly hard either to main- tain good grades or to boost the ones that have slipped. The importance of studies assumes new proportions, as good marks suddenly come to mean the difference between a diplo- ma and a five-year high school course. However, the spotlight does shift occasionally. Senior year is, after all, the year of events. First and fore- most, of course, is that night of all nights - the Senior Ball. The thrill of anticipation! The excitement of the night itself! Enchantment is the password. Following in rapid suc- cession come the graduation por- traits and the day, though not mo- mentous in itself, when each senior is measured for her cap and gown. Cn this day, graduation suddenly seems but minutes away. Qnd those minutes slip by very quickly. Hlmost before anyone real- izes it, the day which culminates four long, hard, wonderful years is at hand, and the seniors walking down the Chapel aisle to receive their di- plomas, once again, as countless others have done, surrender their treasured places to their successors. We entered into the phase of creased and pointed school hats, not-too-white saddle shoes, lvy League book covers, baby food diets, and art supplies: one baggy smock, one bottle of water, one art folio, eight bottles of paint, and two paint brushes. Our superiority was first expressed when we moved up a seat on the bus and when we looked up, not down, for our lockers. Yet our inferior side showed when we still had first lunch with the children, and when we had to give up our seat to a junior or a sophistie cated senior. The newness of sophomore year out- weighed the commonplace problems. We could bear renewing acquaintance with Caesar and friends for we were so anxious to figure out how the base angles of an isosceles triangle could ever be equal, and to prove that Hnous ne parlons pas francais, ln sophomore year we were expected to know everything and were treated as though we knew nothing. The disease had no safe cure. Its symptoms were evident, the pain enduring, the time involved - one year. Hs the year drew to a close, the epidemic ended and we saw and felt a great change in ourselves for we were now on the brink of our junior year. We were pitied by the faculty, ignord by the upperclassmen, tolerated by the busdrivers, and initiated by the seniors. On the first day we were given a program card that seemed to be written in hieroglyphics, all of which meant practically nothing to us, Our educa- tion seemed to change a little, too. Up until now, we connected and Z only with the end of the alphabet. But Mercy taught us differ- ently. Plnd after a week of biology, we were convinced we were born scientists. Flnother wonder to us was the bell system. We would just get seated comfortably in class Cwhich for fresh- men is known to take at least half the periodl when bells started ringing all through the building. The teacher then tried to convince us that the period was NOT over. Of course, we were not alone in our guandary over bells, for even after four years at Mercy, one couldn't possibly know what every bell meant, except ofcourse, the one at 3:40. Hlthough we seemed to lack a con- science, any semblance of sanity, and all coordination, we were blessed with a huge pair of lungs. To us a whisper was only for a church gr a library. Ht any or all other times, we used our voice at full volume. The sign in front of the school says, . . for young ladies, and our dear Sisters certainly got the rawest of raw material with which to work. lt was hard to believe that a young lady would result from these disconnected creatures that lose themselves, and piece by piece, every- thing else that belonged to them, around school. But Mercy wouldn't be Mercy with- out the freshmen-and you know you love us! It you don't remember your marine ver- tebrates, get in touch with any fresh- men biology class, 1 Cit. Ed. We who are seniors often wondered Why and how the lunior High could be so necessary to our days in the Qcademy. Could it be that their outstanding school spirit made us more aware of the part we should play as the oldest mem- bers of the Mercy family? Or could it be their all out for the missions spirit that made us know they were around. So often through the year We found ourselves enthu- siastic, greedy patrons of their cake sales, and the not-so-enthusiastic seekers in their lost and found department. fReclaim -lUc for the missionsl Their eager-beaverednessu for any and all projects, scholastic or social, make the Iunior High a most necessary and loved part of O. Plnticipating graduation, We can look back thankfully on high school days Well spent. Guided by our principle, Prayer, Power, Progress, accepting the counsel of our teachers, and cooperating with the grace of God, We have been trained to take our rightful place as leaders in the world. But we could have done nothing without the help offered us throughout our high school careers. Therefore, in these concluding remarks, it is only fitting that we express our gratitude to those who have been responsible for our success. Our first debt, of course, is to our parents, through Whose foresight and generosity, We have received the intellectual, cultural and spiritual benefits of a Catholic education. Their praise and encouragement - and their cor- rections - have helped us to realize our scholastic objectives, soon to be consummated in graduation. Our teachers also deserve honorable mention, for Without their Wise guidance, wholesome instructions, and genuine interest, our school days would have been not only useless, but terrifically dull. Of course, a special vote of thanks goes to Father Potterton, our mentor, Confessor, teacher and friend, whose lucid explanations have cleared up many a problem, and whose Witty sayings have brightened many a day. Finally, We, the graduates of '58, offer a prayer of thanksgiving to Hlmighty God, first, for granting us the privilege of attending Our Lady of Mercy Flcademy, and next, for giving us the grace to persevere in our aims. Our theme: Prayer, Power, Progress will remind us, in the years ahead, of our complete' dependence on God and His Providence. Our years at Mercy have prepared us for the world because they were centered around God, the Source of strength and of truthg our future success depends largely upon our continued faith in His help. I can do all things in Him Who strengthens me. 149 :EL fix g , Y, K ill iii in s 1,3552 4 - .- av , . .,VVA.....
