Their concern for the student body is evident. The administration consists of nine men and women whose responsibilities range from fixing a sink to informing the students of God's good news. Mr. Bailey, the head of the school, is in charge of the total operation. His assistant, Mr. Miller, is in control of the discipline and attendance of the students. There is not an academic team better than Mr. Bailey and Mr. Miller. Mrs. Fischer, contributing with her career classes, vocational centers and college catalogs, prepares the seniors and responsible juniors for college and career life. Mrs. Ivory, assisting in the office as secretary, keeps files and records of the student population under control with her co-worker, Mrs. Cassady. Leading the business and sports administration, Mr. Boyd shows his ability through his outstanding record as business and sport director. Not only did he bring the football team back to the Silverdome, but Lakes financial affairs were carefully monitored. Mr. Ollie contributed in the maintenance and upkeep of our school and grounds. Guiding the students in the most important aspect of Catholic schools-spiritual inspiration, Father James Cronk and Father Thomas Belczak aided the students as spiritual directors. ---.........,,,,,,,mm' ve adm1n1strat1on Naam its WW YMh 1- ! This is the largest staff that Our Lady of the Lakes High School has ever had. Due to the increase in the number of teachers, students were able to receive special attention from teachers and extra help with their work if it was needed. Besides the twenty regular teachers, we also had the ad- ministrative staff teaching. Mr. Bailey taught English, Mrs. Fischer taught ninth grade social studies, and Mr. Miller taught English and social studies. The quality of the staff at Lakes is reflected in the excellence of their teaching and of their students. 2' 1. I Religion: An enlightening experience One of the benefits students at Lakes receive is a religious program. The main goal of the religion teachers is to show students the role of God in their lives. Mr. Drury, in his second year at Lakes, does his best to get each student involved in religious activities, projects, Bible study and discussion. Our newest addition, Mr. DiPietro, teaches about the emerging church and its history and about morality in today's world. This year's classes consisted of sacramen- tal activities and discussions about Christian J morality. Each class has had debates on it'-K, A, marijuana use, abortion and the drinking age.- This year, as always, the religion classes taught the students valuable lessons that they will use now and throughout their lives to help them become better citizens. The students were offered a large variety of classes teaching reading, writing and rhetoric. The students' willingness to learn was modified and increased by the teaching expertise of Mr. Bailey at the top of the department. The students were also subjected to the Reign of Spain and some were often heard yelling, It's Miller Time. Some were written off to the activities room to compose the yearbook and newspaper under the direction of Mr. Ballou and others were sometimes found speechless in Mrs. Mulcaster's class. In addition to everyday classroom work, students participated in many of the other ac- tivities offered to them. The students took part in the Literary Halloween Contest where all their reading paid off with some excellent costumes depicting characters from literature. Many writing contests were entered by students and the Lakes Third Annual Speech Festival went on as planned. Studying a foreign language at Our Lady of the Lakes can be trying at times, but Mrs. Han- son and Mrs. Corral consider it easy with a little studying at home. Their goal is to produce many bilingual students. Words and phrases are not all that the French and Spanish have been studying. They study popular places that have a lot of background behind them. They do research so they can broaden their knowledge of the language and culture they are taking. Both Spanish and French classes attended rock concerts at Masonic Temple and enjoyed a luncheon afterwards. They had French and Spanish breakfasts, at which the students were able to cook and eat at their own risk. The French class had a cheese tasting day and tried different cheeses on French rolls. The French and Spanish classes have a lot to learn, but their rewards are big. f Zi? ABOVE: Bobbie Allen smiles as she dreams of Paris in the spring. From the creation of the universe to the 1980 elections, the students studied the im- portant events of each year that make up history. The World History classes, taught by Mr. Spain, started with the evolution of man and worked up through the development of the European countries, Mr. Miller's U.S. History class learned about the foundations of our country, and Mr. Sioma taught his students the ways of American Government. Students who elected social studies courses discovered that the past is a guide to the future: What's past is prologue. xx. TOP: Second hour government works on waking up after a hard weekend. We had many new projects in science including the suc- cessful science fair and we had many winners. In our everyday classes, the eighth graders in ISCS dreamed of roasting marshmallows over Bunsen burners and finding a cure for homework. The ninth graders were astonished at the wonders of life science as Mr. White taught the marvels of ecology. In biology, Mr. White and Mrs. Allen joined forces to create an interesting atmosphere. If you passed by the chemistry and physics labs this year, you might have quickened your steps as Dr. Martin created another potion to sedate her students. The students at Lakes are ambitious and realize that science is an important factor in their future. OPPOSITE TOP LEFT: As Sue Serden, Kathy Rigonan and Kim Sevcech look at cheerleading pictures. With several classes available, Laker students had a hard time deciding which math course to take. Sr. Anne, Dr. Martin and Mr. Fader were important factors in the mathematical division. Dr. Martin shaped up the geometry class with the use of triangles, lines, circles and squares, Mr. Fader made math exciting and fun for all with his interesting Friday mind reading games and Sr. Anne was ready to teach students the basics and formulas to help solve the problems of every- day life before they become too complicated. The time and efforts of the mathematics teachers were multiplied by their enthusiasm and yielded on ex- cellent product, Laker math students. Even during long periods of frustration and doubt, the students pulled through to measure up. To sum it all up, learning to solve math problems became easy as pi! This year's Typing I and II classes didn't have much space dur- ing the hour to goof off. Mr. McCandless was always busy teaching the students a necessary skill they will use for the rest of their lives. With his trusty tape recorder and business background, he faithfully taught his class day after day. In accounting, the students learned the valuable skills of balancing a budget and being able to fill out an income tax form. Practical matters like these were taught by Mr. Bronz. He's a newcomer to the Lakes staff but fits in perfectly. Drafting was taught by Mr. Gurk. Students learned how to do mechanical drawings and many types of designs and blueprints. Mrs. Losh taught shorthand to hopeful secretaries and to students who just want to take notes quicker and more efficiently. w, fi ,W -W4 0, fa -f an 7 W Aff, fc f f ..,-v- --.,m.,,,,,,W 0. Mrs. Iaski and the students spent most of their time organizing the card catalogue and updating the reference materials. Students who take Library Science receive an English credit and learn how the library is organized under the Dewey System. They also help other students find the information they need. Students who wish to take Library Science a se- cond year will be library aids and will receive an elective credit. The second year, students will be more involved with cataloguing new materials and assisting Mrs. Iaski. There is also parent involvement in the media center. Some twenty mothers give their time to help Mrs. Iaski and the students in the library. The library itself is growing in size. They pulled through many games to win. They were tied for league champions which hasn't been done since 1972. An outstanding player on the team was Kristi Brink who was awarded All-Catholic and All-League First Team. She was the leading scorer for the team. Another excellent player for the Lakers was Tracy Beadlescombe who received All-League First Team. She was an excellent ball handler and defensive player. Both Maureen Boyle and Dawn Cairns were awarded All-League Honorable Men- tion. But without the help of the rest of the team they couldn't have done it. This year the team was coached by Dan Sioma who helped the team with his enthusiasm and spirit. The girls' record was 17-5. Their last game was against Pontiac Catholic for the C-D districts. If you ever go to a girls' basketball game, you can see the pride they have for their school. You can see the satisfac- tion of success and the tears when they are defeated which isn't often. I.V. g1rls dribble to even season The I.V. girls' basketball team consisted of only six players but they made up for their small numbers in perseverance and skill. Because of a great team effort, the I.V. ended with a 5-5 record. This year there was a new addition to the I.V. team. Chris Townsend, the new coach, made all the dif- ference nithe season. During the basketball season, one could see the girls practicing hard every day after school from 2-4 p.m. and on Sundays from 7-9 p.m. The team realized that all the hard practices and super Sprints paid off as they all joined the varsity team in the playoff game at Pon- tiac Catholic. The enthusiasm the girls' I.V. team displayed throughout the season shows that in the years to come they will develop into a winning varsity team. The talents and abilities they have in basketball are proof that this will happen. .34 . 2 ,ggfnavv ...,V N0 . . f f LU 5 , ,,. ..,. 5 A I y 30,1 Ai, ,,.'. 3 :riff . 1 . '. 7 , l T , ,, . MII Varsity bounces into success Whenever students went to a varsity basketball game, they were in for ex- citement. The Laker squad played action packed basketball every quarter of every game down to the last minute of the game. Each member of the team strived to play to the best of his ability. They were smooth and in control, taking charge and sinking each shot with poise. Not only did they have overwhelming talent on offense, but defense was stressed by Coach Boyd as the key to success. Therefore, they were perfectionists on de- fense also. The Lakers ended a successful season with a second place finish in the tough Catholic League. Along with the great '79 team, this team is also one of Lakes' finest. Mr. Sioma was quick to point out their fine sportsmanship and overwhelming team unity. Leading the team with their sportsmanship and shooting ability were juniors Tony Rana and Bud Holla- day, and sophomore Ioe McMahon. It was clearly visible at their games that they were a team. Mr. Sioma made sure everyone played by switching players constantly. They all played to their fullest ability, sinking shot after shot, and dominating opponent after op- ponent. Cheers from the crowd led them on to victories. Chants, songs, and words of wisdom lifted spirits and boosted excitement. Al3OVE RIGHT: Hollywood Boe skies over opponent to win pump. They kept up a winning tradi- tion by being undefeated in their league, for the third year in a row. Their coach, Mr. Wilgenbush, taught the team how to be prepared to receive both serves and spikes. With the coaching of Tom Rogers, the girls' team and the boys' team have improved immensely. They raced through those gates like Ingemar Stenmark. The team has really made a terrific comeback. The girls lost only three of nine races and placed third in divisionals. They qualified for the southeast Michigan ski invitiational race for the first time in Lakes history. The boys' 'team hit a few icy patches and came up with a record of 1 and 8, but Richard Lane made top 20 in Divisional. It took much work to get where there are today. The class of '82 made sure nothing stopped them from making their junior year the best. With the help of class reps Ann Mauro as President, Theresa Seeterlin as Vice President, Linda Mah as Secretary, and jeff Barn- father as Treasurer, the juniors raised money for their senior trip with many activities such as dances, a turkey raffle, and jean days. As the end of the year came closer, the 11th graders looked forward to being next year's seniors. They have many decisions awaiting them in the future and the juniors have already shown signs of leadership throughout the school in athletics and academics. They've been a great class this year, and next year they'll be even better. The years gone past have been happy and unforgettable ones. It is hard to realize that passing through those steel doors for the last time signifies a beginning and an end. There is so much to experience here, but time has passed too fast. The four years spent seem only a dream gone by, but the memories bring them back. Beyond our school doors lies a place that We have prepared ourselves for. Looking back at the memories here, there are none that we could part with. We've had our past to prepare us, our hopes and dreams to comfort us, and a new horizon dawns on us to guide us. That's what all the students at Lakes have been saying about the school newspaper, the Tidal Wave. The paper has been a splashing success this year. With the advising of Mr. Ballou, a new teacher at Lakes, the paper real- ly went over well. The staff of the Tidal Wave has been hard at work ever since the beginning of the year. Theyive been busy acquiring information for articles, meeting deadlines and getting ads to support the newspaper. Each month a paper was published. It contained in- formation about the school, sports, academics and other features. It helped the students out with knowledge of upcoming events and events that pass- ed. The Tidal Wave really outdid itself this year and next year it hopes to continue rolling on to bring ashore all of Lakes good news. Q . R+ X I Y .. KH Homecoming '80: A memorable n g October 10, 1980, is a date that will be remembered by many students as well as alumni and parents from Lakes. It was the night of the 1980 Homecoming. The Homecoming wasn't just a one night event as preparations were being made the whole week before. Plans were made for decorating the gym, what to wear, and voting for the representatives and king and queen. By Friday night everyone was anxious for the dance. Some people were on the floor dancing to the band, Renegade, while others admired the gym decorated by the Iuniors. Then the time came for what everyone was waiting for. First the representatives of the classes were introduced: 8th graders Kim Boyd and Chris Iohnson, Freshmen Laura Lilienthal and Bob Schuster, Sophomores Tania Ottman and Dave Hensel, and Iuniors Chris Brink and Ioe Lucas. Then came the nominees for King and Queen: Lynn Boyd, Tammy Boyea, Rhonda Councilor, Iulie Kulick, Lynn Hensel, Mike McMahon, Kevin Oliver and Dave Pasterz. Everyone then quieted down as the names of the King and Queen were announced: Mike McMahon and Iulie Kulick. - TOP: Newly crowned Queen, Julie Kulick, and King, Mike McMahon, pose with Fr. Cronk. ABOVE: The Homecoming Court, the class representatives, and Mr. Bailey and Mr. Boyd surround our King and Queen on the stage. But despite the cold brisk weather, the Laker's astounded the Knight's with their willpower and spirit, racking up 16 points in the second half. It was too much competi- tion for the Knights to overcome, as they fell victims to yet another Laker victory. The halftime showed Laker enthusiasm and spirit with the introduction of our homecoming Queen, Iulie Kulick, accompanied by her court, Lynn Boyd, Rhonda Councilor, and Tammy Boyea. The King, Mike McMahon, and his court, Lynn Hensel, Kevin Oliver, and Dave Pasterz, couldn't participate in the parade because they were busy beating their opponent. Everyone at the game felt this was the best Homecom- ing Lakes has ever had. TOP: Homecoming queen Iulie Kulick smiles for the crowd as she circles the track. However, the Ravens were not prepared for the strong Laker second effort, as the tough Laker 4 offense came back to tie the game 14-14 at the end of regulation time, sending the contest into overtime. The Lakers scored first on a 22 yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead, and ft seemed that the Lakers would pull off another upset. The Ravens, however, managed to penetrate the tough Laker defense on a fourth and one from the one yard line to win. Last yearys football team was called The Team of Destiny, so it seems a fitting nickname to call this year's squad, The Team of Pride. Never giving up and always giving forth all that they had were qualities that this I I team never lacked. l I , ,... Vw., ' Q V.. , X A 1-gk, xg- , . A good advisor, a good staff, fresh ideas and a touch of the old and familiar. This year, with a new advisor, Mr. Ballou, a lot of new faces on the staff, and a few familiar faces from last year, the task of making the yearbook was fun and in- teresting. While the rookies of the staff were strug- gling with pica rulers, tag pencils and layouts, editors Barb Rogers and Peggy Fitz- gerald were struggling with the rookies. However, with a lot of patience and per- sistence on everyone's part, it soon became easier to meet our deadlines. As the year progressed, so did the staff in knowledge and patience. Most of all, the staff got a better chance to know the student body, a wonderful bunch of people, and to give them an excellent yearbook.
