Page six '7!ze Ztllaeeh of Pao . . . IME honored but much worn out is that metaphor 'the wheels of progress'. Thoughtful men have long since come to view it with an eye of suspicion. For, while it may be true that the ancient hand which designed the wheel did much to i lessen human burdens, it is likewise true that every lessening of human dis- Mba- 11x comfort has not necessarily meant pro- gress. Progress means going forward not backwardsg but wheels can easily move in either direction! Q. Wherefore, it behooves a man to think twice before he es- says to use this phrase 'the Wheels of progress'. Too often what he thinks is Carrying him forward is really carrying him back- wards. Then, of what use is a 'train of tomorrow' if man has destroyed the very possibility of 'tomorrow'? Ezechiel, great prophet of ages past, once spoke mysteriously of a vision in which he saw wheels. Withersoever the spirit went he said, thither as the spirit went, the wheels also were lifted up withal, and followed itg for the spirit of life was in the wheelsf, This we may in- terpret here to mean that progress is a matter primarily of the 'spirit' rather than of anything else. Graduates! You have learned this eternal truth from God's own Mother! You, of all people, should never mistake mere motion for true human betterment! Your 'train of '49' is quite an advance over the primeval ox cartg but the simple 'wheel' made both of these possible. And great things yet can you make possible, provided you have absorbed the mystery in the words of that prophet in Israel: For the spirit of life was in the wheels. FR. EDWIN Scleuck, O.F. M.
