ALBERS, D.D. vfuxil-jary Bishop of Cincimmti meg 5 gen- ttxttWAMAWTI-Ismxz Our Chaplain Says: WN the march of human affairs the mind of every one asks the question from time to time: uthither am I heading, What is my goal in this life? That query you have already answered for yourselves. Your years of training under Catholic auspices have made you understand that in the Divine Plan happiness is the goal of life, happiness that is identified with God. You have started the life, estab- lished the habits that you know Will lead you to the realization of this objective. In the course of your education you have been schooled to meet the de- mands of this earthly life; the higher demands, en- graved by God on your very nature, have been set before you in their proper perspective. Pursuing this aim, you shall meet false prophets. They would have you change the course you have begun. Their subtle and attractive appeals might confuse you, but you have not built your house on sand? it is built on the rock of loyalty to Jesus Christ. When this very foundation rock is assailed by these false prophets, the personality of Christ Will call to you, and you Will protest With faith like to that of St. Peter: iiLord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.u ' - Qf REVEREND HERBERT KLOSTERKEMPER, O.F.M. Our Chaplain AN TH Wheel, o the Class of 1936: QGRAD UATION marks a red-letter day on the calendar of every student. Hitherto carefully guarded by an anxious parent, a loving teacher, henceforth you yourself must be the director and judge of your onward course. Many a time you Will stand before a Rubicon as did the mighty Caesar of old. Halting, shading his eyes, peering into the future, the dauntless conqueror was afraid. But Ambition sounded the tocsin, and with, nThe die is castf: Caesar crossed the river. He saw-he pos- sessed-but he lost all, even life itself, in the struggle to have all. You, too, dear graduates, will fmd yourselves halted by the Rubicon 0f the warning voice of conscience before a forbidden pleasure, 3 dan- gerous companionship. Stop, attend, consider; restrain your restless, urging inner self. Carefully reared students of the Our Lady of the Angels, you have Within yourselves the great means of victory. You know it; you love it; fail not to use it-fervent ejaculatory prayer. MOTHER M. CLARISSA -megi 10 Egoa-a wwm A M. Aw TH Rosella Ammann ST. T100 amarantlg, flower, never fades, never dies; The mnm'antb, virtue, most highly we prize. Small wonder, then, that we choose for the name of our Annual, the treasury of our high school memories, the name Amaranth. The word amaranth has been in high repute from the time of the most ancient Greek poets. The philosopher saint, Clement of Alexandria, added to the poetic conception of amaranth by calling it a flower of immor- tality. We learn that the fascinating Queen Christina of Sweden, the most learned and accomplished woman in an epoch of learned womenf, instituted a society, Knigbtx 0f Nae Amaranth. With the fall of the queen the order passed Out of existence. Spurred on by brighter hopes than those of the ill-fated Swedish queen, the Seniors of Our Lady of the Angels constitute ourselves an Order of the Amaranth, with a two-fold purpose: to make the knowledge gleaned here at school function throughout life and to make the virtue instilled grow and develop until it reaps fruition in eternity. We are mindful of the counsel- Have you bad a 11171111121633 shown? Pass it 011! hT'was not meant for you alone; Pass it 0113, We would share with you our joys, our treasures, the pleasures of our high school life. In pictures, in sketches, in verse, and in prose we would pass on the account to you. Thus it is we present to you the Amaranth of 19 3 6. With one hundred per cent co-operation the Student Body passed the two-weeksi probation test and enrolled to accomplish the great enterprise of becoming Christlike. THE EUCHARISTIC UNIT encouraged union with Christ . . . daily visits to chapel, frequent Holy Communion, assiduous morning and night prayers. Enthusiasm for methodical visits to the Blessed Sacrament vied with interest manifested in mental prayer. Advent witnessed the rise of i'starsii for each pupil on which to record spiritual practices for the Divine Infant, His present to place in the crib. The graces of retreat crowned the close of the first semester. Lent found each with a chart on which to record Communions received and the donations made for the missions. Surely the Risen Savior had reason to rejoice in the many who rose spiritually with Him. The very name of OUR LADY COMMITTEE suggests its duties . . . to promote devotion to Our Blessed Lady. The Living Rosary was enacted 0n the grounds in October. The Hail Marys of the girls standing in the form of a rosary were answered by the Holy Marys of the entire school. The May Crowning 0f Heavenis Queen brought down the Sacramental Benediction of her Divine San. THE APOSTOLIC COMMITTEE dealt with the temporal welfare of home and foreign missions. Works of this project were the paper-drive for the school; the gather- ing of Christmas bundles of clothing, toys, and medicines for the Crow mission in Montana, for the Mexican and Indian missions of the Southwest, for the colored missions of Missouri and Cincinnati; the financial aid to the Little Sisters of the Poor and t0 the Franciscan Missions in China; and the Christmas party which the girls sponsored for the colored children at St. Anthony school. THE LITERARY COMMITTEE set for its goal to promote Catholic reading. Magazines, which were collected during a drive, were given out to the girls to read. After the students had themselves learned to know and appreciate the interesting stories and articles contained in our Catholic magazines these were in turn passed on to Catholic hospitals. Our many reminders in the form of posters were the work of the PUBLICITY UNIT. Practices, encouragements, and the results of drives were artistically pictured, and graphically charted on the walls in the corridors. THE PARISH COMMITTEE strove to interest the girls in the sodalities and social activities of the individual parishes. Such was the Catholic Action program for the year. We shall not here thank the Sisters for their helpesurely we are their very own, and our success is their crown. We here do voice our grateful appreciation to our Chaplain, Father Herbert, for his ever ready help, his generous encouragement, his inspiring spiritual conferences, and his unfailing spiritual advice. She fears the merry making of the mortals Will spoil her sport and bids Hermes prevent their coming into the woods. Disguised as an old woman HCIITICS comes upon the merry makers, tells them of their loves, and warns them against the danger of entering the forest. Apart from these Endymion tells his friend Eumenides of his love for the mock- ing Thalia. He bids Eumenides leave him alone and join his betrothed Kallisthene in the merry party. ' Artemis appears to Endymion. She would woo him for her companion in the hunt. Just when Endymion and Thalia are about to plight their love, Artemis, invisible to mortals, whispers in Thalia's ear and confuses her. Thalia departs from Endymion to follow her own whims. Artemis summons Hermes to bring Morpheus to her. She bids Morpheus cast a sleep on Endymion from Which none but she may awaken him. Hermes tricks Morpheus to weave into the spell the power for one mortal to be able to awaken him. Morpheus and his enchanters draw a magic circle. Endymion enters and falls into deep sleep. The merry group return to lead him to their games. They endeavor to awaken him. Even the kiss of Thalia fails. They go to report the wicked spell to the parents of Endymion, King Aeolus and Queen Hermie. Meanwhile Artemis awakens Endymion. She offers him immortality and perpetual youth as reward for following her. Endymion will not yield his love for Thalia and his promised loyalty to rule the kingdom of his father. Artemis foiled, casts him back into sleep. The King and Queen vainly offer sacrifice to Zeus to amuse Endymion from sleep. Fearful of the gods all' Withdraw but Eumenides, Kallisthene, and Thalia. Hermes appears and tells them, uthoso loveth the sleeper with such unselfish truth that he will give, for the power to awaken him, his dearest possession-that power is his. Eumenides and Kallisthene understand the sacrifice required. Courageously they offer it. Endymion awakens. Happily Endymion and Thalia express their love. They would have Eumenides and Kallisthene share their joyous day. The sacrifice forbids. Artemis, won by the loyal love of the mortals, releases them from their vow and leaves them all to loveethc purest joy a mortal heart may know. ROSEMARY GLASER $61113 Girls Athletic Association was reorganized this year in an attempt to further interest in sports. This organization has made possible a richer program to satisfy varied interests. Besides a great variety of sports, the G. A. A. gave a Christmas party and in the spring sponsored a skating party successful enough to pay for our new school team suits. In order to hold before the school the high standard that the G. A. A. wishes to inculcate, each year a representative senior who is outstanding in sportsmanship scholar- ship, and activities is chosen by the board members and presented with an honorary award. The board members of the 1935-36 organization have worked faithfully to make the student life in our school more interesting and attractive. Their success may be measured by the generous support of our program by the student body. For what we have enjoyed athletically, we owe them thanks. MARY PETERSON, Pres. eat 80 Rw- Individual Sports M HE G. A. A. endeavored to make individual sports one of the most prominent features on our program during the year. We feel we can safely say that our accomplishment has been a great success. Some of our most outstanding sports were golf, tennis, and archery. Special golf, tennis, and archery instructors were sent by the National Youth Administration to teach these sports. Interest in this project attracted practically the whole school to indulge in tennis instructions, and about two hundrede fifty in golf and archery. Through these individual sports everyone interested in sports has been enabled to take part in at least one. MILDRED GALLAGHER SWIMMING What is it that you can jump into but canit jump out of? You cant guess? I shouldnit have expected you to. The answer is That body of water usually entirely surrounded by girls, the swimming pool. Who are the girls at O. L. A. that have such good figures? Well, all those who take swimming have. And can they swim! See, too, the line that forms at the right for drowning persons. First class rescue work done free of Charge. Satisfaction guaranteed. BETTY DOHERTY BASEBALL Baseball is a sport everyone likes, both young and old; for the young it keeps them young, for the old it makes them younger. The girls at O. L. A. have proved this. Not only the team, but the whole school is interested. Although the gym Class baseball is played upon Cinders and amid gulches, the after school games are played on the public diamonds. This not only improves the play but also the tempers of the players. While this arrangement is good, all of us are looking forward to the time When we shall have a play held instead of a gully behind our school. ROSELLA AMMANN LEA DERSHIP CLUB The Leadership Club is a most important cog in the machinery of the G. A. A. since much of the program is carried out under the direction of the members. Hard work and ofhciating skill is necessary for membership since each girl who is an O. L. A. Leader is also a nationally rated basketball referee, and besides is able to officiate in other sports. The girls of the Leadership Club who wear the O. L. A. Leader emblems are Virginia Ruwe, Helen Meirose, and Mary Peterson.
